Silence.
That's all Säde had heard since her mother had spoken to her days before.
She did not voice this, however, as Rune had not been so lucky.
The deeper they got into the forest, the darker it would get. It seemed that no matter which direction they went, the trees only got taller and the forest itself darker. The creatures grew stranger, some even lighting up when they became startled or flashing colors as a defense. All these creatures were small and appeared only briefly, but they made all three wonder what else could be lurking in the shadows.
Even the petty arguing had ceased when it got dark enough, as the screaming in Rune's head drowned out Eirian's voice completely. For the last day or two- time was hard to tell once the sun stopped showing itself- she had barely said a word and was obviously unnerved by his constant struggle.
The screams had multiplied, becoming various clear voices, the most prominent being that of a woman. Something about her voice stirred sorrow as well as anger in his chest for some unknown reason and it grew to be borderline overwhelming. This day had been worse than others, his head pounding with physical pain severe enough to screw up what little vision Säde's tiny ball of light provided.
The reason she used such little light was to prevent attracting unwanted attention. Keeping this in mind, Rune let a raspy whisper escape, unable to even hear it himself. "I can't- I need to stop," he insisted desperately.
Eirian let out a small, hysterical laugh. "Why don't we just make a huge sign saying 'free meal'?" She hissed, eyes wide with slight paranoia.
"Shh," Säde snapped at her, obviously worried as she turned to approach Rune who had already stopped in his tracks. "You know he can't hear you," she scolded softly before gently lifting his head with her cold touch. Meeting his eyes, she searched them with a heavy air of concern.
He steadily held her gaze, though there was an obvious struggle to keep that kind of focus. Then, with a sudden jerk, he flinched and clenched his teeth together, squeezing his eyes shut whilst leaning forward to press his forehead to her shoulder, turning it back and forth in an attempt to fight back tears the pain threatened to surface.
Slightly taken aback, Säde paused before pressing the side of her face to his head and running her hands along his back in the attempt of a soothing motion, though they shook with fear.
Then, all at once, every shred of light was smothered.
The two girls froze, though Rune remained to tremble, not having noticed. "Why did you do that?" Eirian asked Säde accusingly. Even the glow in her arms had gone out, though she could still feel them smoldering.
"I didn't," Säde whispered, gently pushing against Rune's chest so he straightened up and blinked. At first he thought his vision had given out entirely, but panic touched him when he realized something must have put out the pale girl's light, hence her sudden haste.
After just a moment, Rune let out a cry that quickly turned into a growl through clenched teeth, doubling over and tangling his hands in his hair.
"Eirian," Säde gasped urgently.
She didn't need to tell her twice. Eirian attempted to spark flames to light, though for some reason it proved to be increasingly difficult. Though she could feel the heat grow, the light refused to shine. With a grunt of frustration, she urged flames to sprout. In a single bout of light, they erupted from her for only a split second, billowing into the air before being smothered again.
This was just enough light to petrify Säde and Rune, though Eirian had been too focused on her fire to see what they had so briefly illuminated.
A looming figure flickered in the light before them, tendrils blacker than a starless night swirling through the air like ink in water. However, what caught their attention was the flash of hollow, stark white eyes and a sharp-toothed grin gracing the elongated muzzle of a wolf, tar-like substance dripping from it's jowls.
The two of them stood frozen in overwhelming fear when the light flickered out. It took until the chill in the air dropped even lower before Säde found her voice, but only enough for a high-pitched demand. "Eirian!" She pleaded, lashing out to grasp Rune's hand with a crushing grip, which he returned rather than flinching away from.
"I'm working on it!" Eirian insisted. A few more flickers she managed to create had allowed her to see the creature herself, growing wide-eyed and easily more frantic. The shadow took the form of a lanky, bony wolf, though distinguishing the limbs was near impossible and it towered at least twice the height of any of them, growing closer to Rune with each flash. Sparks burned straight through it, causing it's form to dissipate wherever they touched.
Heart pounding unbelievably fast, Säde attempted to take steps back but came to a halt when Rune stayed anchored to the spot, even when she pulled on his arm. She looked at him in frantic disbelief but refused to release her grip, calling to Eirian again. "I need a bigger one!" She demanded.
"By all means, you try to make a big ass fire in the presence of a shadow!" Eirian howled impatiently.
Meanwhile, the screaming in Rune's head had never been louder. At the same time, he had never been less aware of it. Though the darkness prevented him from seeing, he could feel the shadow before him, calling to him and growing ever closer. Some kind of fear seared his veins, but more than anything he felt an unnerving familiarity. He felt as though he shared a morbid curiosity with the shadow itself. What would happen, he wondered, if he just-
Fire roared to life off the side, causing Rune to hastily retract his extended hand and forced him to tear his gaze away from the creature he'd been nose to nose with moments before.
Dropping his hand, Säde raised her arms and stole the light from Eirian's fire, expanding it to surround all three of them.
With a hideous screech that only Rune could hear, the shadow's swirling tendrils seemed to droop; melt as it hastily retreated. As soon as it was out of sight, the pain all at once flooded Rune's entire body ten fold and his grip on consciousness was lost.
