Dustclaw targeted a big black tom. He took him by surprise, leaping onto his shoulders and nipping his neck. The tom let out a yowl of shock and pain, and tried to shake Dustclaw off. He dug his claws deeper into the skin, until the tom fell. "Here's for stealing MoonClan's prey. Do it again, I won't be letting you go so easily. Understood?" Only then did he let go and watched him race back to his camp. Dustclaw looked around. He saw Willowstream beating a ginger she-cat, but Dovepaw was under a NightClan apprentice. He raced over and ripped him off. "Dovepaw! Are you ok?" he asked.
"Fine. Just a bit of a shock, that's all," he panted. Dustclaw nodded and ran off to Rainstrike's side, where a pair of grey toms were eyeing her, getting ready to attack. He jumped and landed gracefully beside her. "Now," he breathed to Rainstrike. They attacked one each, but they were easy to pick off. They squealed like they were kits, then ran off towards the camp. "Cowards!" Dustclaw called after them.
"Thanks, Dustclaw," mewed Rainflower. "I'd be crow-food if it wasn't for you." Dustclaw dipped his head, then ran towards a young tortoiseshell she-cat. He attacked the small apprentice and ripped her ear, which was enough to send her bolting to her Clanmates. He froze as he noticed Willowstream covered in blood. "Willowstream!"
"I'm fine," she mewed. When Dustclaw tried to interrupt she said, "This blood isn't mine." He let his shoulders sag with relief. There was one more cat to go, and when he gave her the deathstare she winced, then reared up again. Dustclaw nodded to Willowstream, who nodded in agreement. Thank StarClan she knows exactly what I mean, he thought. They ran off in different directions, and nipped her legs. She yowled, managed to scratch Dustclaw's nose, then ran off again. "Cowards is what they are," muttered Dustclaw.
Just then he noticed two cats pelting towards them. He unsheathed his claws and got ready to fight. Then he realised they looked familiar, and that he was about to attack his two Clanmates - and his daughter. "Ashtail, Lilypaw! We're fine. We fought off the brats. Is Moonstar's patrol okay?" he asked.
Ashtail looked up in alarm. "No! You have to help us! They're losing! Moonstar's almost lost a life!"
What? Moonstar losing a life? This was her last one!
As they approached, it was only MoonClan cats he saw. He raced over to Moonstar. "Moonstar...! No!"
"Dustclaw... my time is up. Lead the Clan well. You can do it, I know you can. I will watch over you always. Goodbye, Dustclaw."
