Ever so carefully hooves graced the forest floor, quietly and with a purpose moving forward. A stag, white as snow led the way, followed by deer. They made no sound as they headed out of the trees and out into a field. The world was still asleep, most of the humans still resting, along with the animals who preferred the light of the sun. Some who stalked the night paused to watch the odd procession go through. A group of sheep made their way up to the deer, a solid black ram gently tilting his head to the stag. As the procession grew the sheep followed along with the deer, however less graceful and loud. They stumbled along as they entered the forest once more. The herds had merged, the ram and the stag walking side by side at the front.
"It's been too long Varkan." the ram spoke to the stag. The white deer nodded his head in agreement. With a deep breath the ram continued to speak. "I'm worried. It doesn't seem like we are going to get a warm welcome after what happened last time. I know that it has been a very long time, but they tend to hold grudges. I also prefer not to get on their bad side. They bring more trouble than they are worth." the ram added.
"I understand your worries. These processions will not last much longer if the fighting continues. I think that the Elk clan will solve the problem. I trust my cousins. I only wish that they were there last time to prevent all of this. Its a shame that Akar grew ill. He will not be joining us this year. He is too old and too sick. His son has taken his place." his quiet voice seemed to carry, the rest of the group growing quiet once more. "We grow closer, stay here while I go get the goats." He said dryly.
All the groups hated the goats, for they were the instigators, always fueling the flames of arguments. Varkan returned with the goats in tow, them being louder than the group was before on their own. A squat shaggy white goat took his place with the rest of the leaders, smugly walking along side them. Nobody spoke until they arrived at the meeting ground. It was alive with the sound of chatter, animals of the hoof taking their place in the sacred meeting ground. For centuries creatures of the area who possessed hooves met in the night, talking of all things they felt needed to be dealt with. For the most part these meetings were peaceful, until last year when the goats caused a fight between the boars and the horses, and the deer getting involved trying to break up the fighting. When the last group walked in a deadly silence fell over as the leaders took their places in the circle. They spoke quietly, discussing what they could before something bad could happen. The tensions were high, and it seemed like everyone universally held their breath.
Then the goats started. Fortunately Varkan's follower silenced them. The leaders turned and began to discuss their issues out loud for everyone to hear. Everyone kept a close eye on the goats, waiting for them to slip up. The meeting passed without incident, yet it was when they were leaving when real fighting broke loose. The boars and the goats were in it, physically fighting. Nobody moved to break it up, all stood watching the goats lose the fight. That is until a large young elk broke through the crowd. "Stop." Everyone turned to the voice that did not yell, yet seemed to have so much power and authority. He turned to the goats with a stoic expression. "We have given much thought to this, and it seems that you do not need the chance to redeem yourself. You would not be able to do it anyways. Under the circumstances you find yourself in, we have decided that you will not return to these meetings. Ever." Cries of offense rose up and he silenced them once more. "Leave. Everyone."
With that the meeting broke up, all the groups of animals leaving. They hurried home, for the sun was rising. Nobody spoke, though they all were silently thankful that the goats were gone for good.
