Roll says... 7: Continue for him.
You put a paw forward and speak after a moment's hesitation. "We were going to leave with her two kits. And...and at the time, it didn't occur to us that if she found out, someone else definitely could have too. So, just when we were heading away from camp, three cats approached us - two cats and Darkpelt."
"I was the one who found out, in case you were wondering," says Darkpelt. Everyone looks her way in surprise.
"R...right. Anyway." You force yourself to relax when twelve pairs of eyes focus on you again. "So the two cats threatened us. They said that they knew we were up to something, and I...I wasn't involved with this bit, but..."
You look to the ground.
Darkpelt sighs. "You two with your squeamishness. I'll tell it."
You don't get a chance to respond before she's going on with the story. "Rainwhisker ordered the group to attack and they did, first charging one cat and killing him quickly. The second one - you all remember Sandheart? Big guy, over-enthusiastic about the war? Anyway, he grabbed one of the kittens and killed it. I guess he thought that it was better for them to die than to abandon their Clan in 'our time of need'."
Her casual tone feel out of place against the air of horror that permeates the circle of cats. Even Heatherheart looks shocked.
"So then he grabbed another kitten, but Elmflower was done with Russetstar by then-"
"Russetstar?" Mudstream interrupts.
The blind cat's whiskers twitch in amusement. "Oh yeah, did I forget that part? It was Russetstar that led the search. Anyways, so just as he had the second kitten, Elmflower screamed and attacked him, but he ran off. It was quiet for a second, so I took the opportunity and said, 'You guys can take me with you, or I can tell the entire Clan that you're planning to leave and that you killed Russetstar'. So they took me, and since we didn't have time to go back for Elmflower's kit-"
"Slugkit," Elmflower murmurs. "His name was Slugkit. And his sister-"
"Is dead," Darkpelt continues. "So then we left quickly, and found you guys, and here we are. The end."
There's a long stretch of silence after this story. Elmflower can't raise her head, Rainwhisker looks ashamed, and Sorrelstripe and Dipperpaw are utterly still, avoiding eye contact. You huddle nervously.
Finally, Mudstream speaks, and her voice is incredulous and angry. "Do you mean to tell me that you left the Clan without a leader, deputy or medicine cat on Gathering night?"
"Goosecloud was still there-" starts Rainwhisker.
"You pretty much beheaded the Clan! No wonder they were angry!" The dark brown tabby bristles. "And you let Sandheart escape and lead an attack on us!"
"I left, too," says Patchclaw. "I'm a medicine cat - I was the only one in FenClan."
"At least FenClan still had a deputy and leader," says Flyfang. "But, look, it just sounds like a bad situation that couldn't be helped."
"These idiots are responsible for all of our injuries," says Hollypaw irritably. "If you guys had just refused Elmflower, this wouldn't have happened."
What's done is done.
Maybe we should have left earlier.
Don't blame us!
We couldn't change the plan.
Say nothing.
