CHAPTER ONE
MAYBE?
Kyle's ashy gray wings whirled slowly through the gray air. Did not any of the other bats see the desolation around them? Their world was always a flat dull gray. A hundred years ago bats known as the megas had driven Kyle's kind know as the micros from their home in the realm of Nyght into this dull gray dimension called the eventide. Now no bats were aloud by the Elders to venture beyond the eventide forest and into the realm of Nyght.
Kyle sighed. Weren't bats creatures of the night? Didn't they belong in that realm. Not here hovering on the brink of the realm of Lyght? stuck in a flat dull realm?
Kyle wheeled his wings back towards the colonial cave. There was a strict limit on how long the bats could be out.
"KYLE!!" a feminine voice shrieked.
Kyle groaned "Yes Carolina?"
The young female shot over to him "Hey I was wondering where you where! Your sister said you where at the pools but i couldn't find you!"
"Yeah, I got tired of fish diving," Kyle told her.
"Well, I hope your not too tired because me and the gang where gonna have a fly out down in the Silver room and your invited," Caroline fluttered her eyelashes at him.
"No, I think I'm going to rest for a while. It was an exhausting bug hunt and I'm really tired," Kyle said hurriedly. He was tired it was true but he really didn't want to be the object of Carolina's affections. Besides that he hated the Silver room. The rocks had a metallic sheen to them in that particular room and many of the other bats loved that room for its singularity. But Kyle didn't. It was only a tad bit different from everywhere else in the eventide.
He wanted to go to the realm of Nyght but if he was out even a few minutes after curfew a patrol would be sent out after him. And He would also be alone. He scanned the cave roof for a minute. Looking perhaps for a friendly face or someone who would enjoy his company, before winging off to a remote niche.
He flipped upside-down and hung. He sighed and closed his eyes, hoping to get some rest.
"The mid-lands are dangerous."
Kyle nearly let go of his perch when he heard the somber female voice.
"Oh, Leaza, you scared me!" Kyle exclaimed to the female. She was the same ashy gray as everything else in Kyle's world, but her face was thoughtful and brooding. And her eyes! They were beautiful. They had a strange light in them. Like the small pricks of sky lights said to inhabit the sky in the realm of Nyght.
"The mid-lands are dangerous, you need someone to back wing you," Leaza repeated in a dull monotone.
Kyle's face twisted in confusion "How did you?..."
"I just know..."
Kyle frowned. Did he really want to take a FEMALE on such a dangerous venture? But if there was one bat he wanted to take with him it would probably be Leaza. She was smart, level-headed, and had some fantastic wing moves.
"I'm fine with you coming... but when should we? You know?" asked Kyle
"In two hunts time," Leaza's voice had a dull finality to it. Then slowly turned and flew off.
'HOW DID SHE KNOW!' Kyle's thoughts shouted. 'And what is so special about in two hunts time?'
Impossible as it seemed Kyle fell asleep.
'Maybe I can get away from here......'
CHAPTER TWO
FLY!!!!!
Kyle's heart was beating wildly and his stomach was twisted in knots. It would only be a few more minutes before Leaza would meet him. There was a faint whirring and Leaza and two other bats landed.
"Leaza who are these guys?!" demanded Kyle.
"They are coming with us," Leaza replied.
"But?... How?!"
"We three have waited a long time for a forth companion to join us in our quest," Leaza informed him.
The bigger of the two bats hopped forward "Hello I am Bryce and this is my sister Ava," the smaller bat gave Kyle a tiny wave.
"I'm Kyle... um nice to meet you."
"We should leave now, there is a large fly off going on in the silver room, if anyone misses us they will assume we are down there, by the time they realize we are not there, we will have been gone far enough for them to be unable to track us," explained Leaza.
"Lets go then!" Bryce exclaimed softly.
They flew in silence for about half an hour... until...
"Stop! Flyaways! STOP!!!" The four turned to see who was following them. A patrol of twenty bats were pursuing them.
"FLY!" Shrieked Ava. The four bats flew as fast as they could.
"How... did... they.... Find us!?" panted Kyle
"Someone must... have seen us leave...." Leaza gasped.
"They're gaining!" Bryce shouted.
Kyle whipped his head around trying to find a safe hiding place.
But Bryce beat him to it "Follow me!" he shouted and dove into a deep canyon.
Suddenly Kyle was trying not to lose Bryce in a maze of tunnels. He had never felt this twisting and turning in flight. Kyle was actually enjoying the twisting and turning. It felt good and much better then the slow straight flight paths they had been taught to use. Suddenly Bryce wasn't in front of him any more. He could hear Leaza's or Ava's wing beats any more either.
"Bryce?" he called softly "Leaza? AVA?!"
The only answer he got was his own voice echoing off the canyon walls.
Feeling very lost he continued down the winding pathways of the canyon. He flew in he dizzying twists and turns, until he could barely lift his wings. Slowly he glided into a crack in the canyon wall. He grasped the roof of the crack and almost immediately fell asleep.
Chapter three
Where am I?
Kyle awoke sometime later. He felt refreshed. At least his wings did but his mind felt exhausted. He pricked his ears trying to pick up any sounds. It was eerily quiet. The wasn't even the faint buzz of an insect. Kyle felt lost, scared, and alone. He dropped from his perch and power-flap out of the canyon. When he was high enough he gazed around. None of his surroundings where even vaguely familiar.
"Where am I?" He whispered into the ever-grey light.
He pricked his ears and listened as hard as he could. A tiny buzz caught his attention. Kyle shot towards the small cloud of insects. They where gone in several seconds. Kyle blinked he hadn't realized he was so hungry.
He frowned down at the curving and twisting canyon. The first thing he had to do was find Leaza, Bryce, and Ava.
But how? Kyle sighed, folded his wings, and dove into the canyon. He made little noise as he searched the cracks and crevices, he didn't want to attract any attention to himself. He also wanted it quiet so he could hear the other three. Anything would do, a wing flap, a heart beat, the slight breathing would do.
Kyle seemed to search for hours. He searched until he nearly slammed into a dead end.
He couldn't help himself as a torrent of anger and frustration bordering on nonsense poured from his mouth "Stupid canyon! I bet Leaza and the others left me here! Why did I even do this? This whole idea was stupid, if I had taken my time and thought about it this would've never happened. But no-o I had to rush into this without a second thought! Or even a first one for that matter. Now I don't even know where I am!!!"
Kyle's ears dropped and his wings slumped over.
"Silly! your outside my home!" A bright voice chirruped.
