    Introduction;;
This story describes my life, every feeling, emotion and thought from the most dramatic and interesting parts of my short life so far. My life has been one with many roller coasters and twists and turns, but in the end, it's not what happens that matters, it's who you are. I will skip over the first few years of my life, I was a useless child, caring not much about anyone but myself, my brother and my best friends Navi and Sage. I did lose my parents at a very young age. Well I say lose, I didn't like the outlook they had on life, the way they lived and neither did my brother, Mohatu. I still saw them, from time to time, but any relations were strained. I was bought up by a lady named Rosalin, who cared for me and Mohatu like a mother. For much of my life, I was oblivious to pain and suffering, until I was eight years old.

But before we dive in, let's start off with a few things. My name is Kana, Kana April Odair. I grew up in District 4, and the rich part of it at that. Rosalin had won this competition thing called The Hunger Games, and I didn't really understand it much when I was little but as I got older, I realized more. This was a competition where young beans between the ages of twelve and eighteen are forced into an arena to fight to the death. It was a big part of our culture, and so I was expected to go along with it, as was my brother, Mohatu Odair. That name, even then, when he was just a teenager from District 4, sent girls wild. He was a massively popular boy, always had been, but he showed no signs of settling down with a girl. He just seemed to flirt around, and not go any further than that, but I remember how caring he always was when I was little.

This story begins, one day, very shortly after my eighth birthday. Let me set the scene for you. It's an early morning, the sun having just risen, but it's warm, despite it being an autumn day. The leaves of the trees are beginning to fall, scattering small dew drops with them as they tumble aimlessly. They crunch beneath the feet of passers by. That was the day where me, Navi and Sage had wandered out of our houses to play, and it all began with a fish...

Part one;;
"Kana...?" A familiar voice called in a confused tone. "What are you doing?"
I span around, to face the fuzzy white hair and fur of one of my very closest friends, Navi. I had known Navi a long time, and from the first time we met, my bubbly happiness, and her solemn confusion of that trait just instantly made us friends. Saying this, she was often confused about a lot of things I did, I guess it was our quirky little way of being friends.
I looked into her confused blue eyes, and rolled back giggling. I was holding a fish in my hand, and I had been trying to stop it from flapping around. I loved to play with fish, I liked to pull them out, and play around with them until they stopped flapping, and throw them back. I never realized quite how twisted that was. This secret pond, or so we thought, belonged to me and Navi, and we would tend to the fish there, together. We usually had to be careful of when we went down there, as there were usually lots of people around, but for some reason, on this day, there weren't. The streets were virtually empty. It confused me, and worried me, I won't try to lie. I knew there was something different about that particular day, but I never guessed how much this one day of sheer chance could shape my life forever.

Suddenly there was a strange noise, and a small green bean leapt out on us, giggling frantically. He looked like mint choclate, with his small brown streaks, and he wore two blue feathers in his ears. He was quite a bit smaller than both me and Navi, though I was quite small for my age anyway. He was a fair bit younger than us, oh yes I knew exactly who this bean was!
"KANA! NAVI!" The bean squealed giggling.
"Sage! What are you doing here?" I called back, half giggling, half irritated.
See this bean was Sage, younger than me but still one of my very best friends, he was quite excitable but a ball of fun to be around, and incredibly sweet.
"FISH!!" He screamed, seeing the creature in my paw, and trying to nudge it back into the water.
"Hey what gives mintbrain?" I cried, pulling the fish away.
"Kana you're hurting Mr Fish.... Throw him back!" He replied sadly.
I looked at the fish, and sighed a little. I wondered, what would it be like, to be trapped like that, with little, or no hope of escaping. I sighed again, and threw the fish back. Navi seemed to soften a little, and almost smile. Sage giggled and divebombed me, hugging me.
"Yaaaaaay!!!" He squealed, and I shot a small scowl toward Navi's slightly amused look.
"Come on, let's get you home before Alyssa or Ellie decide to come and drag you home themselves. We aren't supposed to be out today." Navi said cooly.
"What?" "We aren't?" Sage and I said together.
"No, it's the day of the reaping." Navi said simply.
    Silence.
"I.... I go now..." Sage muttered quietly, turning tail and leaving the two of us.
"Reaping?" I asked, hoping she didn't mean what I knew she did.
"You know, the Hunger Games? It's that brother of yours' third year in the reaping?" She questioned emotionlessly, and I replied with a simple nod and a sigh.
We, wordlessly, began to walk back, our tails flicking randomly, the air suddenly a lot thicker than before.
"You know Kana, in just four years, you'll be in the reaping." Navi muttered, before entering her house, and I allowed my mouth to fall open slightly.

I didn't want to have to think about that.

I shook the thought away, and carried on walking. I pulled open my door morosely and was instantly met by a wave of shouting.
"-not going to let you!" Were the first words I heard, coming from a teary eyed Rosalin.
"Rosalin you can't stop me, it's my choice what I do with my life! I've told you." My brother replied, in a calm and comforting tone.
    "But Mohatu...." Rosalin whimpered.
"It's about time someone in this district made a stand for things. We're supposed to have volunteers, that's our reputation but the last few years, we have been ridiculed by one and two. I will give them a shock."
I was only eight, this conversation didn't strike with me it's true meaning at the time, I just passed it off as one of the rare arguments that our family had, and slunk off to my room.
A few hours later, after I had played my piano a little, read a few pages of a book, and drawn a quick self portrait, Rosalin came up to my room. She knocked softly, and pulled open the door a little.
"Kana are you okay?" She asked quietly, still sniffing slightly.
I nodded cheerfully, and stood up.
    "Why wouldn't I be?" I asked with a smile.
"Well I mean it's the reaping today, and as you know, Mohatu's name is in there more times this year. Are you not worried?" She asked, sitting down.
"No, because even if he gets picked, he will win." I said in total confidence.
This pulled a sigh, and a slight, but forced, smile from Rosalin's mouth.
"I have something for you Kana." She said, leading me out, her hand feeling comforting on my own.
She led me into her room, where she then said.
"Close your eyes." She whispered with a smile.
I heard a door creak and then a slight rustling. Then the movement of cloth, being layed onto something. Rosa's chair, I assumed. She removed the simple tshirt and trousers I was wearing, before slipping the garments on to me. They felt soft, as if they had been washed many times, or with very luxurious washing powder, but also felt quite strange, like new clothes usually felt. These clearly hadn't been warn very many times.
"Okay you can open your eyes now." She said with a smile.
I opened my eyes, coming face to face with the most beautiful clothes I had ever worn. I was greeted by a small white blouse, with puffy sleeves, and frills, along with a small white skirt, that would twirl when I did so. They were plain, but textured, with nothing but plain white fabric. I smiled, turning back to Rosa with a small smile.
"Thank you... But Why?" I asked softly.
"Well, I wore this on the reaping when I was chosen... I was always a small girl, and I thought this would fit you." She explained, smiling.
The clothes were a little too big but I thought they were beautiful nonetheless, and spun round in a circle.
"They're beautiful!" I squealed, hugging her with a grin.
I never thought to wonder why she gave me clothes of such significance on that particular day.
We wandered downstairs, and Mohatu smiled softly as he saw me. He picked me up and spun me around smiling.
"You look just like a princess Kana." He told me, smiling softly.
I noticed the tears in his eyes, but I paid little attention.

The three of us wandered onto the streets, joining the hoards of people who were already there, muttering in low tones. I saw Sage and tried to wave but I don't think he saw me. We gathered into the square, and Mohatu went off to get his blood sample taken and to gather with the other teens, I waved happily, grinning. He waved back, seemingly nervous, but I thought it was just normal reaping nerves. We stood waiting, as the District 4 escort, Elouise came out, and greeted us in the usual, ridiculous Capitol accent.
"Hello and welcome to the reaping for the 65th Annual Hunger Games! As usual, Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favour! First off, we have a video for you, straight from the Capitol its self!"
And on cue a video began to play. It seemed they showed one every year, explaining the rebellion, and why they created the games. I didn't understand it all but listened anyway. When it stopped, Elouise clapped her hands together and smiled joyously.
"Oh isn't it wonderful! I always love that story. Now! The time has come to pick one brave young man and woman to compete in this years Hunger Games for this proud district! As usual, ladies first!" She said, smiling in a fake, plasticy sort of way.
I didn't hear the actual name being called, I was trying to sort out my clothing, but I soon saw someone I recognised approaching the stage.
Helado! A family friend! She looked sad, creeping up the steps to the stage, a miserable expression on her face, and I was sure my face mirrored it.
"Ah! How wonderful! Now, are there any volunteers?" She asked.
    Silence.
"O-okay then! A round of applause please for Miss Helado!"
    A sombre applause came following.
    "And now for the boys!"
I will never remember who it was that she drew, I didn't know them, but I remember the scared expression on the boys face and I remember how relieved I had been.
"Excellent! Are there any volunteers?" She asked.
"I volunteer as tribute!" Came a booming voice, that I recognised all too well. A shot of fear ran through my body, and I hoped that I was wrong.

I saw the familiar yellow fur break through.

"MOHATU!" I felt myself cry, bringing silence all around.
    Everything suddenly made sense.
The volunteer was my brother, Mohatu Odair.
