Chapter 1
"Mireille! Quickly! Quick..." Cassie was running up to me, panting. "What?" I asked her, picking up my spear. "There was an alien in the woods! I saw it with my own eyes!" she panted to me, wide eyed. I handed her a duck leg and told her to calm down. "Your nerves have been on edge since your 18th birthday. You really need to settle down and eat for a bit. Let me go check it out." I say and pick up a few more spears in case I lost mine. I walked away, trying to look calm even though I was a nervous wreck. This certainly wasn't the first alien sighting in these woods in the past year. It was as if they were looking for something, or someone. I've killed about, I don't know, maybe 12 in the woods? We never eat them because it would seem like cannibolism. I was scared that they would find us and kill us. I was too young to hear them whisper in my ear as they murder and eat me like they did to my mother. I trudged through the woods and caught a glimpse of a metal suit, just like the ones that the aliens wear. I dropped down, ready to strike, when I heard screams. A woman's voice was yelling my name. "CASSIE! CASSIE!" I yelled and jolted up, about to run to her, when someone grabbed my arms. I looked up and saw dark grey eyes looking down on me. "We've finally found you."
I was forced over to the alien base, where I found Cassie strapped down to a chair. They sat me next to her and strapped me down, taking my weapons and my bracelet. "MY MOTHER GAVE ME THAT!" I yelled and tried to grab it back, but the alien that was taking it held me back and dropped the bracelet in his pocket. "So Mireille, Cassidy, how's life?" the alien asked and sat down. I glared at him and asked, "Why do you want us? We aren't hurting anyone! You have enough people in your little system. Why do we matter?"
"Mireille, you're such a fool! It's the principle of the thing! You can't run a perfect government without everyone involved, now can you?" he asked and flashed his sickeningly white teeth. "I've been thinking." he said and acquired a more serious look on his face. "I should just kill you now, but that would take the fun out of the game." I jutted out my jaw and narrowed my eyes. "What game?" I asked, trying to look menacing. "The whispering game! It's only fun to kill when you whisper in their ear, isn't it?" he asked. "If you know that I'm going to kill you, that takes out some fun too." I stared at him and turned my head over to Cassie. "You sicken me." Cassie muttered and clenched her fists. "It isn't like you humans have emotions or brains." he said and waved his hand like murdering people was no big deal. "What is your name?" I asked. "My name is ÆŒQTÂ, but humans are too puerile to pronounce it correctly, so you may call me Supreme Overlord." ÆŒQTÂ said and stuck his chin very high in the air. "Well
Supreme Overlord," I said sarcastically. "I hope you have a pin that I could use. I really need to burst your bubble." I said. The alien quickly stood up and walked over to me. Everything happened in a flash. He pulled out a sword, I heard Cassie screaming "NO! MIREILLE! NO STOP!", and suddenly, all that I saw was black. "Sleep well." was whispered into my ear as I died.
That's when I woke up. Cassie was still sleeping next to me and I didn't want to wake her. I was glad that the past few hours had only been a dream, but I also had a reason to worry. All of the dreams I'd had lately had come true, and I was hoping that I could change this one. I used to think that Mireille meant 'wise dreamer', but Cassie always told me that it means 'to be admired'. I knew what Cassandra's name meant, but I hated it. I never wanted to believe it, but her name means 'to destroy the great'. Cassie couldn't possibly destroy anyone! She's so sweet and kind! I didn't want Cassie to know the meaning of her name, so I told her that Cassandra meant 'the one who establishes peace'. She actually believes it, so I have nothing to worry about. Cassie woke up and looked over to me. "What were you doing up so early?" she asked and kissed me on the cheek. I was about to respond when I realized that she'd kissed me. "What the heck was that for?" I asked and stopped myself from slapping her. "I dunno, if we're about to die, I just wanted to get that over with." she said and shrugged. "What makes you think that we're about to die?" I ask her, trying to change the subject, repressing the feelings that I've had for her since my tenth birthday to actually talk about our safety. "I can tell when you've had one of those dreams. Spill it." she muttered and lay back down. "No, I didn't have any dream." I lied, looking out into the woods to avoid eye contact with her. She can always tell when I'm lying if she sees my eyes. "Tell the truth." she said. "And look at me so I can tell if you're lying. If it involves your health, it is very important to me." she said and looked at me. "There it is again with the romance again! First you tell me that my name means "to be admired', then you kiss me, then you tell me that I'm very important to you." I say and look at her, turning away again before lying, "I just want to be friends." I look over and Cassie looks hurt. "Of course you're important to me! We've been best friends for 16 years! We've known each other since we were two! I love you like a sister!" This stings but I don't want to admit why. "Why wouldn't I care about you?" she asked. "I know, I'm sorry about that. I care about you too, but I've just been cranky since your 18th birthday. We're getting too old to hide in the woods. We're both legally adults now, so we need to take a stand." I sigh and look at her again. "We aren't cowering kids anymore." I say and stand up. "Well, if you really want to revolt against the aliens, we need to practice." she said and handed me his bow and picked up my spear. "But... that's my spear!" I complain and try to take it from her. "We need to master all of the weapons." she said. "Let's get started."
After three months of practicing, we'd both mastered the bow, the spear and throwing daggers. "I think that we should make shields." I say. "Why? I mean, I'm sure that you have a good reason, but we've gone our whole lives without shields." She said and picked up her spear. "We've never needed shields before because we've never fought the aliens before."
