"Kidan...is something wrong?" She asks you, looking up with soft silver eyes. "You look sad again." A gentle grey paw rests on your own, and you blink, before looking up. A small smile slips onto your lips.
"I'm fine, Aphine. Just tired." You tell her, the words empty as they waver. Her head cocks slightly, ears perking against the white rose on her head. You laugh gently, then embrace her, wrapping your paws around her slender body, clothed in silver and midnight velvet.
"Are you sure?" She asks, getting another tiny chuckle as she slips her own paws around your waist.
"I'm sure. Don't worry about me. I'll be alright."
A small smile forms on her beautiful face, and she sighs, her sweet breath rushing warmly over your muzzle before she presses a kiss to your soft, wet nose. "Alright..." For a moment she is quiet, before her smile fades and she rests her head on your shoulder, eyes closing. "Kidan."
"Yes?" You ask quietly, eyes widening.
"Never let me go."

A loud banging on your door wakes you, drawing you from your dreams. You pull yourself from the warmth of your bed, and glance once at your stirring mate as she sits up, rubbing her eyes. More banging. You turn, rushing out of your room and around the table before pulling the door open.
A guard stands there, the familiar purple and blue of his armor clearly indicating his inferior Dream Keeper ranking. Your eyes widen, and your mouth drops open a little as the creature speaks.
"General Kidan, the Nightmares are attacking! They're spilling over the walls, and infiltrating the city," The amber eyes of the soldier widen as he speaks, and you tense as you notice gleaming, dark blue liquid staining the blue griffon's belly fur.
"What happened to you?!" You demand. "Where is Sheer?"
The guard shakes his head, panting, legs barely holding him up, and a grimace appears on your face as bitter pain spreads through you.
"Go," You say. "Get the twelfth quarter and head to the healer. You won't survive battle in this state. Who else dissipated?" You demand as you turn, grabbing your sword and slipping it on.
"Everyone."
You pause, turning to stare at what you now know is the last of the seventh quarter. You say nothing at first, then nod stiffly. Then, the guard runs, obeying your commands. You immediately go back to your room, throwing open the closet and take your shining silver armor from the wall. The blue wings resemble a Butterfly Wolf, a symbol of beauty and grace, of power and superiority. You don't hesitate to strap them to you, hissing in pain as the small spikes on the inside of the armor lock into your flesh, fusing with your nerves.
Quickly, you move each wing, checking to see if they are working correctly, and begins to pull on the remaining pieces of the set. Your mate is standing now, wide awake, blanket pulled around her. "Kidan?" She asks, face pale and eyes wide with fear. You look back at her, a pang of worry hitting your chest.
"Alphine. The Nightmares have gotten past the wall. You have to go to the inner courts." You order, taking her shoulders in your paws. Her fear is rolling off of her in waves, and she opens her mouth to protest, but no words come, and her silver optics mist with oncoming tears.
Suddenly, the ground shakes underneath you, a violent ball of flames exploding in the once quiet street outside. Screams pierce the air, and your shivering mate presses against you, clear liquid spilling down her cheeks. "I have to go. Please, go through the back and get to the gate as soon as you can." You plead, breathless.
She nods, but doesn't leave right away. She reaches up, clicking your scarf into place, tears shimmering on her muzzle, and you press a kiss to her cheek.
"I'll be home soon," You breathe.
Then, you let go, turning to the burning streets and heat of battle.
They've already begun to swallow the outer city with darkness, spreading their toxic shadows, the world dying in their wake, grass withering, stars blinking out. You've never seen this many of them in your life, and panic threatens your numbing paws as you ready yourself ad spring down the stairs and stop in the center of the street. Flames rise from houses nearby, and dreams wail as they flee.
You twist your head, eyes wide as you catch your mate urging a mother and her child from their burning yard and lead them toward the inner court. There are no other guards, and you wonder where the seventh quarter are. As soon as your heart begins to sink into despair, you spot five flying figures, dream realm armor shining in the moon. A battle cry is raised, and you launch into the air, drawing your sword.
Only six soldiers. You don't have to be told to know there is nothing left. This is all the backup you'll receive. Nero is there, black and ivory armor tinted with purple as he sinks his weapon into the black depths of a nightmare. It screeches, then launches itself back at him, and he disappears in the writhing mass of shadows. You give a roar, your glowing sword slicing easily through a small nightmare, the creature squealing, and it disappears before you turn to the next.
It seems like hundreds of them are there, attacking from every side, and you take down another as you notice you're being cornered. Nero backs toward you, and the two of you find yourselves with a burning wall to your backs and a writhing mass of darkness to your weapons.
"Nero?" You breathe, taking out a small nightmare that lunges at you with a powerful swing.
"Yeah?" He pants in return, blue eyes darting over to you.
"Go."
His optics widen, and he freezes, deep aquamarine body tense and crimson paws frozen. He stares at you, and you look back before smiling. "Make sure the inner court is up and protected." You say, determination on your face, but your eyes betraying the truth. He hesitates, then nods, readying his wings.
"What do I say to her?"
You pause, thinking, then close your eyes before looking up at him.
"Never let me go."
He nods once more, then begins his ascent, gaining speed as he runs up the stone street.
You turn back to the writhing mass of creatures in the distance, crawling over the wall. You take a deep breath, then clamp your teeth onto your winged, glowing sword. It's a suicide mission, you know. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Gage go down, then Feurin. You're alone in this street.
You're the last soldier.
You're the last distraction.
You ready yourself, wings pumping furiously, gears clicking as you drop to your legs and launch yourself down the stone, gaining speed with every bound, armor lighting up, eyes wide, teeth and claws bared, sword ready.
And you collide with the mass of darkness like an exploding star.
Never let me go.
