PART 8
Mystic slowly opened her eyes and groaned at how bright it was. She flipped the end of her tail over her face to block out the sunlight and laid there listening for a while, not wanting to get up. She could tell from the noise level outside the cave that everyone was awake and busy; she was sure Nitro had told them not to bother her. She closed her eyes but could not fall back to sleep so she sighed, stood up and stretched, then winced as she stretched her sore muscles but then realized they didn't hurt as much as she thought they would. She would have to remember to thank Haven. Her stomach was growling from hunger and as she sniffed the air she realized someone had left food in the cave. Near the entrance was the same bowl from the night before. In it was some sort of meat. Mystic wasn't sure what it was; she was used to eating dog food, but she wolfed it down gratefully. After a few minutes of hesitation she decided it was time to go outside.
She wandered outside of the cave and was almost immediately greeted by Max.
"Good morning Mystic! Do you remember me from yesterday? My name is Max. This is my friend Fall. He likes blue too, even though his eyes are brown. Do you want to play a game?"
Mystic laughed at Max's enthusiasm. He came bounding over to her with his friend tagging along. Fall was also a puppy. He was vibrant shades of yellow, red and orange with whispy white lines zig zagging across his coat. His paws, the tip of his tail, nose and ears were a vivid green and his eyes were brown. In contrast to Max, he was very timid.
"Good morning Max. Of course I remember you. I would love to play a game, but maybe later. Right now I kind of want to learn my way around and meet some more people."
"Okay! We can take you to meet new people. You met my sister yesterday. She's out hunting, but Inga is taking care of us. You can meet her. And you can meet Autumn, that's Fall's sister. She's really nice. And then, we can take you to the hut by the river and you can meet Spring and Twist. They watch us sometimes too, but not today because...well...its Inga's turn today. I have a lot of other friends too, and you can meet them, come on!"
Max rambled a mile a minute and then bounded off, presumably to where Inga was. Fall glanced sideways at Mystic then scampered after Max. Mystic followed along.
"Inga!" Max called, "Mystic woke up! I know you told me not to bother her because she was sleeping but she's awake now. I waited until she was out of the cave. She said she wants to meet new people and then she will play a game with me and Fall! So I brought her here to meet you!"
"Maaax. You shouldn't be bothering her." Inga chided as she came out of the hut that Max was bounding towards. She saw Mystic and smiled.
"I'm sorry about him, he gets really excited about new pack members."
"Oh, I don't mind. I think he's sweet. Its nice to meet you."
Mystic tried not to stare. Like Josie, Inga had three tails, but that is where their similarities ended. Inga's coat was shades of gray and white and her markings were a dark red. She had a red dot above each eye and markings that looked like wings on her shoulders. There were similar, smaller markings on her back legs and on her far left tail. The bottom of her feet were red and her eyes were a very pretty shade of dark teal. She wore a wristband on her left front leg that had markings similar to the ones on her coat.
"It's nice to meet you too. Max, Fall, why don't you go find some of the other pups and play. I'm going to talk to Mystic for a while and show her around."
Max whined and grumbled as him and Fall walked off to find someone to play with.
"They are cute, were they born here?"
"No, they came here with their sisters. Max has been here for about a year and a half and Fall about 8 months."
"A year and a half? But Max is so young..."
"They both have Perma Puppy Syndrome."
"Perma what?"
"Perma Puppy. It means permanent puppy, there will stay puppies forever. It was an experiment the humans were trying, since everyone loves puppies. They hadn't perfected it yet so in most litters there was only one pup born that way."
"Oh...wow. I hadn't heard of that."
"Yea, it just depends on where you come from. Some of our pack members are from far away. You'll see as you get to know people. I can introduce you to Fall's sister Autumn when she gets back. She helps me watch the pups most of the time. She went down to visit Spring and Twist."
"Max mentioned them. He said he was going to take me to their house."
"Oh, we can go there if you want. I didn't know if you were feeling okay. I know the trip here is hard sometimes."
"I'm feeling pretty good right now."
"Alright, its not far. They live down by the river."
Inga and Mystic walked along slowly and Inga chatted about the pack and where everything was, pointing out things to Mystic as they walked. They were turning a corner to head down the hill to the river and Mystic almost ran face first into Black.
"S-sorry." She stammered as she skittered backwards to avoid him. He looked her up and down coolly with his ice blue eyes.
"Watch where you're going, City Girl you might hurt yourself."
"Like it would matter to you if I did."
Black snarled and Mystic noticed that Inga cowered behind her.
"Watch who you talk to like that around here. Being new only lasts so long." He snapped his teeth at her then trotted past them. Mystic turned to Inga.
"What is his problem, seriously?"
"He is one of the alphas, you should always respect him. He will cut you slack for now, but once you'd been here for a while you can get in trouble for talking to him, or any alpha, that way."
"I thought Nitro was alpha?"
"He is. This pack is different. We have more than one alpha. Black is pretty much second in charge. He doesn't have a mate yet, and everyone is waiting to see who he chooses."
Mystic snorted.
"Whoever it ends up being, I feel sorry for her, he sure can be a jerk."
