Sorry if I can't post without being accepted, but I do have a question. I'm writing a story (well, more like a novel series really) and it centers around three kingdoms of big cats at war with each other (actually, more like two--the third is pretty much either killed/taken prisoner). I have three main POV characters. Two I'm establishing arcs for, and I'm getting pretty far. The third? Well, I'm having trouble with her.
The character is question is a wise, old female snow leopard named Alyzanya. She's in the same kingdom as the antagonist, and she's basically watched him grow up from innocent cub to merciless killer dictator. (She's not his mother, merely his mentor figure). I've got two routes in mind, but they've both got problems.
Route One wrote:Alyzanya stays in the kingdom, watching Ithatoron (the antagonist)'s transformation with horror, eventually helping the other characters foil his plans, though with much regret.
Pros: We get to see Ithatoron's transformation and descent into darkness from someone in the inside
Cons: Alyzanya herself pretty much does nothing. If I go this route, I might as well switch it to Ithatoron's POV. But I would really prefer not to, especially since Alyzanya was (and still is) a major character, and I just don't want to toss her aside like that
Route Two wrote:Alyzanya goes out into the "No-Man's Land" (a.k.a. the Chiambe mountains) in search for Ithatoron's exiled sister. Nonuka, Alyzanya's friend, also goes along for the ride.
Pros: Alyzanya actually goes out and does something! And it's a good way to bring in Nonuka and Ithatoron's sister, because Route One would have them sitting around awkwardly, even though no matter what route I take, Ithatoron's sister is going to end up being the queen of her kingdom.
Cons: It's basically the Lion King, minus the romance. Also, what would Alyzanya and Nonuka do besides partake in random adventures and mention that they once dated? And what about Ithatoron's sister--she'd still be sitting around awkwardly. And what would happen once the duo does find her? If the sister agrees, it's almost like a deus ex machina, but if she disagrees, it would be hard to make it different from the Lion King.
So what should I do? Which route should I take, or does anyone have any basic ideas for a third route? Please PM me if you want more details!
Again, sorry if I can't post without being accepted first.
It's automatic acceptance. ^^ It should say that on the front page. Anywho, welcome!
I see your dilemma there. I personally prefer characters to be more active in stories. In fact, if she's a main character, active is almost always the best choice. Otherwise the story can become very boring. Don't be dissuaded just because a single plot point resembles another story. If you comb through enough stories, you'll find that all plots are basically the same, they're just repeated, and repackaged over and over again (
The Lion King is based on
Hamlet after all). As long as you're not purposefully copying a plot from another story it should be alright. Just make sure you make it your own plot, with your own little twists, and nuances. Anyway, from what it sounds like it doesn't seem very
Lion King like. The point of view isn't from the King/Queen learning responsibility, it's from the other character's journey, and what they discover.
Really, you just need to pick what's best for the story. You could probably even combine the two: start off in the kingdom watching everything, and then have her leave. Or even dedicate a few chapters to your antagonists POV. To me, it seems like you're more interested in the second 'journey' option, and I think that may be more interesting to write. Anyway, you said the sister becomes queen no matter what route you take. Do you have another plan to introduce her? If not, the journey story seems like the best option to take.
