No one actually says that they hate a book because it has a female main character, just because they want to hide the fact that they are rude. And no, females aren't harder to write, people just constantly put them into stereotypical positions and situations over and over and over again. You have to avoid stereotypes, stereotypes are bad. A large majority of the male stereotypes are either: 1. made to make men look stronger and tougher or 2. not entirely male issues, and mostly based around other issues. And you know what, a lot of things are about feminism. You have to look deeper into things and realize that things are problematic, and how to change them.
And also, you know what, sexism against men doesn't exist. There, I said it. Do you want to know why? Because sexism isn't feelings getting hurt, it's years of oppression, its entire systems of oppression. Men have always been treated better than women in media and books, and that's a fact. A large majority of books are based around men, or there's always a plot shoehorned in about yet another cishet romance, and it gets tiring. As someone who isn't straight, it's so so tiring, as a girl, its so so tiring, because you get forced into roles you don't want to be in.
Men can be anything they want in books. They're brave knights, they're adventurers, but do you know what women usually get to be? Women get to be whiny, they get to be The Girlfriend, or The Sexy Lamp, and its so tiring. I'm not saying that all books are like that, of course not, I'm saying that misogyny is a running theme in books, and we shouldn't just ignore that.
Feminism isn't for men, sorry. Talking about how "I want EVERYONE to be equal" Is great, sure, but you seem to misunderstand the concept of feminism. Feminism is about boosting women up so that they are on the same level as men.
So, guess what, if you complain about how "Writing females is haaaaaard!!!!!" and "I want to avoid stereotypes, so I won't write women." You seem to think that women are some mystical creature that no one can understand when they are no different then other actual human beings who have actual emotions and are actual people with varying lives and different ideas about everything.
Write women in your books. Write women in your books that are strong. Write women that are friends with other women, write women that don't feel like "they aren't like other girls" because the only way women can get through this is if we realize that other women aren't the problem. Write women who fight dragons and write women who are powerful mages, and write women who are spies and knights and ghosts and demons and everything else you can think of.
edit;; also PLEASE WRITE MORE WOMEN WHO ARE GIRLY. Please stop playing off of the stereotype that the girl who likes makeup and skirts is one dimensional. Please watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy liked girly things and skirts and all that, but she still kicked a bunch of vampire butt.
BTW this took me a very long time to write, and I just wanted to get my two cents in.
