Chapter TWO
ScarStars blue eyes widened at the limp BrightPaw that lay in the center of the camp. The cats wailed around him.
"No..." The leader whispered and ran towards his son. "BrightPaw!" He yowled, licking his cheek.
FrostPaw was murmuring throughout the yowls. "He set out this morning. I told him not to go without a warrior." He whispered.
BrownPaw nodded, but his blue eyes were settled on his dead den-mate. He could almost wail to the sky, demanding for a reason to why it had been BrightPaw who died and not him. He felt guilty on how he didn't do enough to stop BrightPaw from going out.
ColdEye sighed. "He was found at the Northern border." The white tom reported to the distressed leader.
SecretHeart was ready to hear the leaders wails of despair. To hear him loose his dignity in loosing his son.
ScarStar had lost everything he cared about. His mate and now his son. How long would the snow clan's leader hold up? With the upcoming threats from the HailClan... Would the leader be ready for... For... SecretHeart thought of her dream all of a sudden. The dead warriors... Were they all being killed off one by one?
No, it couldn't be. There was HailClan warriors there too.
It could always be just a dream.
"I'm sorry ScarStar." BlueFur mewed. ScarStar nodded, licked his son once more before walking back to his den.
"I wonder how he manages." ArrowStripe said, licking his paw. ColdEye, ArrowStripe and Secretheart had returned to the warriors den after saying their last respects to BrightPaw.
"I don't think he will manage for any longer." SecretHeart whispered, swiping her paw over her ear.
"Do you think he will give up leadership? I mean, ever since he became leader bad things has happened to him." ColdEye mewed.
"ColdEye, I don't think leaders can just 'give up' like that." SecretHeart frowned.
"There's always suicide." ColdEye shrugged.
"Don't say that!" SecretHeart cuffed his ear gently with a paw.
"I'm just saying that it's likely to happen. after all there's nothing for him here to live for anymore." The white tom grunted.
"There's his clan." ArrowStripe managed to say between licks.
"Well, there can always be a new leader. There can be a new leader to a clan but not a new father to a cat or a new mate to a heartbroken tom." ColdEye said.
"Nobody can replace ScarStar!" SecretHeart objected.
"Come on, everybody knows that you wouldn't mind BlackTail as a leader." ColdEye smirked and nudged the she-cat.
"What!? No I don't! I mean, I do... I mean, I wouldn't mind BlackTail as a leader but I wouldn't want ScarStar to die!" SecretHeart objected, her fur fluffed out.
"Yeah, sure." ColdEye smirked.
"Hmph, I think that BlackTail would be a brilliant leader, equally brilliant as ScarStar." SecretHeart announced, lifting her nose to the ceiling of the den. The sunlight faintly sparkled through the branches of the ceiling. ArrowStripe looked up at the ceiling too, noticing the lack of cover.
"Should we go out and get some more branches?" He asked. ColdEye nodded.
"I guess we could do with some more covering." The white tom agreed. Secretheart nodded. The brown tabby stood up and crept out of the den.
"Where will we get branches?" She asked as the two toms slithered out of the den.
"The only place is the forest, but it's inhabited with HailClan warriors." ArrowStripe frowned.
"I guess we could just sneak along the border." ColdEye shrugged.
"Hmm... I'm not sure. Since we went earlier, they could have picked up our scent." SecretHeart sighed.
"Okay... Any other way?" ArrowStripe asked. SecretHeart shook her head.
"It's not like we can't fight them off. I have a bone to pick with them and what they did to BrightPaw." ColdEye spat, his ice cold eye narrowed. ArrowStripe nodded in agreement.
"Fine fine." SecretHeart shrugged before leaping off to the entrance to the camp. She glanced back at the two toms following her before heading out.
The three cats raced through the snow, their paws flicking up white powder in each bound. Suddenly, SecretHeart skidded to a halt and sniffed the air.
ArrowStripe stumbled behind her and ColdEye halted and held his white head high, blinking his one-eye furiously.
"What is it?" ArrowStriped hissed, peering around the border. The she-cat ignored him and crept forward, sniffing here and there. She climbed the nearest tree elegantly and quickly. Her nimble, brown paws slipping up the trunk. SecretHeart clambered onto a branch while chewing off other twigs that branched out of the main branch which she sat on. After a snapping sound, a few branches fell down and the two toms crept forward to collect them. SecretHeart chewed off some last branches. She was in the middle of chewing a thick one as she heard the sound of twigs cracking from behind her. But it hadn't been ColdEye, nor ArrowStripe for they hadn't moved and had dragged their twigs away to the top of a little hill for them to run and collect while they waited under her silently for more branches.
The white toms fur bristled and his eye narrowed as snow began to drift down to the ground. ArrowStripe let out a slow hiss into the shadows while SecretHeart stayed in the tree. She shuffled around to see a patrol slip out of the darkness of the forest.
The patrol existed of three warriors and two apprentices. Two of the warriors looked fairly young. Maybe a little bit older than the three SnowClan warriors who were not long out of apprenticeship. The other warrior was older and stronger, battle scarred and stained with old memories. The apprentices were old, nearly as old as the young warriors. They should have been apprenticed long ago.
"RedNose." A roan coloured shorthair mewed to the older warrior. His voice sounded like gravel crunching. He stared staight ahead at the SnowClan warriors. The roan cat swiped a red, blood soaked tongue over his lips while waiting for orders. A white cat with a red mark circling around his nose lifted his head.
"Yes BloodLust... These cats seemed to have crossed our territory lines. As a clan who is beggining to return, we must protect ourselves." The older warrior spoke.
"Does that mean...?" A little golden apprentice began to speak.
"Of course it does LionPaw!" A she-cat hissed. The golden apprentice looked frightened, she didn't want to attack these cats and the look on her eyes clearly showed it. LionPaw had seen the activities in the HailClan, her eyes were stained with horrible events that every cat could read of. The other apprentice, a tortoiseshell tom, licked his lips and pounced forward. The roan tom (who appeared to be called BloodLust) launched after him, grabbing a hold on ArrowStripe who yowled as the thron sharp claws tore his pelt. ColdEye was tackled by the older tom who was named RedNose. The white snow clan warrior fell onto the snow with a thump but fought RedNose skillfully even though he was pinned to the ground.
The tortoise shell apprentice had climbed up the tree and was lashing his tail tauntingly. He looked bigger, stronger and older than SecretHeart. She hissed and lashed out a pall but the apprentice only dodged and laughed. Grinning, he slithered further up the tree. All of a sudden, there was a loud cracking noise. The crackling sound of wood filled the cats ears. Suddenly, the branch tumbled down. Luckily, SecretHeart leapt off but her landing faultered and she tripped over with the sudden force of the snow.
