"By naming our kits as apprentices, we show that our group will thrive in these tunnels," Prickly's voice rang out. Tangletalon sat with the rest of the group, she had a pair of young cats at her paws. A golden tabby she-cat with soft, fluffy fur, and a blue-grey tom. The she-cat was figiting, while the tom was trying to calm her down.
"Don't worry," She meowed very softly in their ears. "You'll both be great."
"From this moment on, until she earns her name as a warrior, this kit shall be known as Endlesspaw." The golden tabby took in a shaky breath as her new name was said.
"Sparkler, it's your time to take on a new apprentice. You will be mentor to Endlesspaw. You've proven to be intelligent and skillful, and I trust that you will pass on what you know to this apprentice." The red tom gave a glance towards Tangletalon as he stepped forward, touching noses with the young she-cat.
She sat down beside him, turning her pale blue eyes back on her mother and littermate, smiling. "From this moment on, until he earns his name as a warrior, this kit shall be known as Rockpaw. Cobble, it's your time to take on a new apprentice. You will be mentor to Rockpaw. You've proven to be courageous and kind, and I trust that you will pass on what you know to this apprentice." The tom was a bit braver than his sister, and it showed in his deep blue eyes as he padded up to touch noses with his mentor.
"Rockpaw! Endlesspaw!" The calls echoed loudly through the caves.
Tangletalon couldn't keep the smile off her face. Prickly was much more understanding than he had appeared when she first joined the group. She knew that he had tried to pick mentors that she knew well, and he had changed the apprentice ceremony-and had agreed to change the warrior ceremony when the time came-so her kits would still be raised by the Clan's ceremonies.
"Mom!" The two kits bounded over to her excitedly.
Tangletalon gave each other them a lick on the head. "It's not so scary anymore, huh? Now that you're an apprenitce?" She asked Endlesspaw.
"No, it's exciting!" She replied.
Darkshot, Dovely, and Granite, who had been made apprentices two moons before, bounded over. "Let's go find your nests in the Rain Cave!"
Tangletalon had learned it was part of the ceremony for new apprentices to pick out their nests in the Rain Cave after their ceremonies. The other apprentices would go instead of a warrior, to make sure they didn't get into trouble. As the five cats scampered off, she turned to Cobble. "What makes you think those three are going to not get into trouble with Rockpaw and Endlesspaw?"
Cobble shurgged. "Tradition. There have been crazier cats. Like Tag was when we escorted the new apprentices. They may be troublemakers everywhere else, but something makes them obey the rules when it's part of the tradition."
"Cobble!" Rickety called, where she stood with Twist, Affinity, and Pepper. Rickety and Twist had been made apprentices before her kits had been born.
"Sorry, I have to go hunting," She meowed, getting up and bounding over to join the patrol.
Tangletalon watched her go, then decided to ask Chameleon if she had anything to do. "Hey," she jumped a bit when Sparkler materialized beside her.
"Why do you always do that?" She asked, her ears flat on her head but a smile on her face.
"What?" He asked stupidly, though both cats knew what she meant.
"Just show up behind me," She replied.
"I don't know," He said, then added with a smile, "Because I can."
Tangletalon narrowed her eyes. "Need something to do while we wait for the apprentices to come back?" He asked, still wearing his mischevious and smug smile.
"Yeah," She asked, intriuged.
"Wanna...help me clean up the nests in the apprentices cave?" His tone turned from mischevious to pleading.
Tangletalon rolled her eyes, "Fine!"
She followed the tom to the cave, and they got straight to work. After he got rid of the old moss from the nests, she set up a couple new nests for her own kits and helped put in new moss. By the time they finished and had padded into the cave, the five apprentices were running back.
Darkshot let out a call, and he seemed excited to be the one to announce it; "Rain!"
