Has anyone noticed a rise of snarky and kind of selfish female main characters? I mean, it's all about girl power, but I kind of miss the nicer heroines....like Snow White...or Alice...or Dorothy...

Because I want to write a story about a girl who's kind of a doormat (and then her journey to overcome it), but I'm scared people will all be like "ANTI FEMINISM!!"

I normally make strong characters [though they turn out to be loners or push others away >_> or are just moody T_T] because I wish to see some of those traits in myself

Inner strength can be found in any personality type, and good female characters are simply multi-dimensional and interesting. If you character is snarky and stubborn just to try and make them strong, they'll probably come off as flat.

Also though, I always thought Alice was sort of a brat woops.

But Alice was not nice at all lol.

lol but she was innocent (you don't find very many innocent characters today) and she didn't go around insulting people (unless they did something first).

I couldn't agree more. This new snarkiness in female character suggests that it is this way for all women, which is certianly not true. There is certainly a difference. For example: Nancy Drew vs. Katniss Everdeen. You can decide for yourself which is more appealing.

when people make a weak willed nice guy character, they're like "WHAT THE F-CK IS WRONG WITH THIS AUTHOR"
I have a weak willed male character for my nanowrimo and an abrasive but super insecure female character for it as well.
I actually considered making her very weak willed, but in the end, I think the male is much stronger than the girl.

I'm considering using my roleplay characters in NaNoWriMo, what do you guys think?
It's just because I know them best and all...

Both of the characters I typically roleplay in literate are far from overpowering or rude.

My male is very insecure, skittish and easily subdued by his older brother. The female has a childish, sweet personality and is a very innocent at heart. Neither are pushy, stuck-up or Mary sues, and I prefer it that way. I've noticed I have a lot more fun playing characters with more flaws.
