For anyone who's in the process of/has published an actual, literate novel;

I really want to write this book that I've had in my head for years. I have a few ideas - some that I'm certain will spill out very nicely onto paper. But, I'm having a hard time concentrating. Being a teenager and living in my house does not mean quiet, but that's not really the problem anyway. I really want to start it, but I'm not quite sure how. My instinct and feeling in my gut tells me to write at the beginning and let the story take me away, but in the past that's failed, leaving unwritten stories dusty on Word Document. The other idea is to write all the events of the book down and then execute them, but that's failed me before too. The last thing I could do is write scenes of the book I see in my head and then put them all together but I don't really want to do that because there's no way my tale can expand that way. I guess what I'm really looking for is deeper motivation. What have you all done?

Thanks in advance!

Well, I've never published a novel or anything, but I know what you're going through. I would suggest making a Word Document or take a piece of paper and use that for planning out your story. Write a brief overview of the story, including it's themes, characters, settings, any background information you's like to include, and any extra ideas that come to you even if they seem unrelated. It can be as short or as long as it needs to be. I have overviews like this that are a paragraph long, and others that take up several pages. Then write briefly about the scenes you have in mind. Don't write out the whole scene (unless you really want to) just describe it. It can be as detailed or as undetailed as you like. Then you'll have all the scenes you want planned out, but there's still plenty of room to make changes and you can just write freely without the pressure to connect them all. I've done this a lot and it always works for me. It helps you keep a clear goal in mind for a story, and that makes it easier to stick with. And don't be afraid to completly rewrite your overview if while writing it the story takes a turn you weren't expecting.

Silverhart wrote:Hi guys! Sorry I haven't been active for a few days. I haven't been feeling my best, so I wasn't really up for any critiquing. And I've had no muse for writing. Except last night I got a ton of great ideas for all these new characters. There's no plot yet, just a lot of connected ideas right now that I have to flesh out. But I'm pretty excited about it. It has the nice "new idea" smell! ^^

I would love to enter the contest, but I have no good ideas for it...

And SnowStar, I'd be willing to read over what you have so far and help with the paragraphs and give critique things. I'm feeling much better, and I have time later tonight. You could PM me if you like.

Thank you so much. I'll try to finish up the chapter tonight, and once it's done I'll send it in a PM. If I can't get it done tonight, I'll try tomorrow.
Sorry that I haven't been on much today, today has been kinda busy for me.
So full of hate were our eyes
That none of us could see
Our war would yield countless dead
But never victory
So let us cast arms aside
And like discard our wrath
Thou, in faith, will keep us safe
Whilst we find the path

No. If I could swear on here I would. Would everyone please tell Rose that she's a phenomenal writer? Or at least she is to me. :3

Aww, 【ᴳᵘᵃʳᵈ ᴹᵉ】 are you down in the writer's doldrums? I hate those. You can do it! You don't fail. No matter what anyone says or what you think! And you will get out of this funk eventually. You gotta keep writing regardless, that's the only way you'll get better. Maybe if you take a break for a day or two; relax, eat some chocolate, read a good book, clear your mind - you'll feel better. It always makes me feel better.
