Too Much to Ask - Dragon Story (Read? :D)

Yep, this is my little writing project. Including dragons. Yippee.

Yeah, I just spend half an hour tempting my muse out from under my bed. It might have been easier to go under there and get it myself, but I'm terrified of that place. So I enticed it with cheese.

And wrote this! I'd be glad to have people tell me what they think. That is, as long as they keep in mind that this is purely unedited and just a manifestation of headthought rambles I made. It's not my best work, but you can read it anyway.

So, here you go!

Chapter 1
In Which Two Main Characters Are Introduced
But No Names Are Given

The hunter: Swift, silent, and graceful.

She swooped down on her prey from above, holding back a clumsy giggle as she neared it. Her prey was unaware of her attack, and if it all went according to plan...

He flight was getting sloppy now. She needed to focus. She remembered what her teacher had said, all that time ago: live in the moment, no matter what you were thinking before.

If there was any time that was necessary, it was while hunting. Another giggle almost escaped the hunter. She silenced it just in time.

She had pulled up from her swoop, realizing that that angle was off by a few hundred meters. If she could just aim right, look where her prey was going, and dive to the exact point it would be later-

Hunting was no time for thinking. It was about acting, on both skill and instinct. With any luck, she'd get it right. She grinned at the idea - finally getting it right! She would say that she'd lived for it, but that would be a bit too much of an overstatement.

She actually didn't care much about hunting. She wanted to win.

The sky, clear but for the mass of storm clouds blocking the sun, was offering perfect winds. Her prey wasn't looking around, and wasn't cautious at all. If she failed, she'd be laughing stock for everyone she knew.

Although, she thought sadly, I don't really know anyone around here.

She decided to count to three, realizing how much time she was wasting just hovering and thinking. She narrowed her yellow eyes, taking a stance for a steep, swift dive.

One. Her beating wings slowed, just barely holding her in her place. She leaned forward in anticipation, claws readied.

Two. She let her face take on a satisfied smirk as her prey drew into a near-perfect position.

Three. The snapped her wings to her sides and immediately became a streak of white, barely visible despite the lack of color. This was her top speed, a sign that she was really determined to win.

She opened her mouth and let out a warning screech, similar to that of an eagle. Of course, it wasn't an eagle. She was too even-colored, a bit too furry around her neck, and had two too many limbs. Her wings were leathery, her eyes were sharper than any bird of prey's.

The hunter was a dragon.

Clearly.

Down on the ground, a thick-muscled, annoyed-looking shape plotted along. His golden eyes were casting around, as if searching for something. His claws accidentally ripped up the ground around him. His thick tail swept the scratch marks away. His old mentor had taught him that - never leave tracks. Never let anything follow you if you can help it. Even if you have nothing to run from, there's something you don't want following you.

He huffed to himself. He certainly wouldn't have minded being followed last year, when he was simply disowned by one of the few creatures he could trust - as least in that species. Humans as a whole were horribly unreliable.

And he'd thought that there could possibly be an exception. Right.

He was better off blocking those thoughts from his head. Living in the moment, where he was free, the strongest creature for miles. Yes, another lesson from his old teacher. He wondered where she was now, if she'd been abandoned like he and his companion had.

He glanced around again. That's right - his companion. He'd been looking for her.

A short sound hit his ears, the sound of a wingbeat, close enough to be directly over him. He didn't have to wonder why he hadn't sensed its presence before. He wasn't underestimating his abilities, it was just that he couldn't sense something that wasn't on the ground.

Then, a remarkable screech sounded. He smirked - he knew that voice. It was a good try on her part, but it wouldn't work. She'd alerted him to her presence too soon.

The hunter was a dragon, yes.

But so was the prey.
