Chapter 1

Talon howled, the song low and eerie. Out of the darkness of the surrounding forest, shadowy figures glided towards him, halting near the base of the boulder that he was perched on. He looked around at them, his dark brown coat gleaming in the white light of the full moon.

“I have called upon you to welcome one of our pups into its first year of life. Bone, step forward,” the lanky white pup took a few shaky steps forward. “As you walk the treacherous path into adulthood,” Talon recited the age-old ceremony, “we walk beside you. We will hunt for you and guide you, but you must find your own way. Until you prove yourself worthy of pack membership, I deem you an Omega. Prove your strength, courage, and loyalty and you will be welcome.”

All at once, the figures below howled in unison. Bone took up the howl as well, though not as loud, for he had been pushed to the edge of the clearing by his former pack mates. Talon leaped down from the boulder and raced into the woods, his pack trailing after him one by one. Bone held back in the clearing to gather his thoughts. He sighed in sadness, trying to prepare himself mentally for the next months of sheer loneliness. He gazed up at the moon for what seemed like eons, but was only minutes. Finally, he trotted out of the clearing and into the forest.

As he darted and weaved around mighty pine trees, he caught the faint scent of wolves from his pack. The flash of pelts through the foliage confirmed the presence of a hunting party- usually two, but in this case, three, Hunters accompanied by one or two Guards. Bone’s ears pricked at the thought of food and bolted over to join them.

“Wait for me,” he called. The group slowed and allowed Bone to run with them, though they ran faster, so as to keep him at the back. They sprinted over the ridge that made up the horizon for the wolves at the den site and into the valley below. The leader of the hunting party, a lithe white wolf named Frost, sniffed the air. Her ears pricked in excitement and her tail started to wag.

“There’s a small herd of deer near the eastern river,” she exclaimed, her eyes glistening in the light of the fiery dawn. The group quickly made their way over to the river and sniffed around, catching the scent of about seven deer- a buck, four does, and two fawns. At last, they located the herd and took up their positions. Bone hesitated, unsure of what to do, so he stayed hidden with the Guards.

“Okay,” Frost signaled towards an elderly doe nosing around the grass near the bank of the river apart from the main herd. All three hunters crouched low, so as not to scare her off, and moved slowly over to the deer, the long grass concealing Frost’s white fur. The old doe became uneasy and started to inch back towards the herd, but one of the hunters, Jasmine, cut it off, forcing it back towards the fast-moving river. The wolves surrounded it and the deer, seeing its only escape across the river leaped in, but the raging water was too much for its thin legs and it was swept off its feet. As soon as the deer’s muzzle became submerged in the freezing water, all three of the Hunters leaped on her, biting and tearing at her sopping pelt. Frost lunged for the throat and bit down, twisting her head so her nose and mouth were underneath the water.

At last, the deer’s delicate legs gave one last kick and the wolves hauled it onto the shore to feast. Eagerly, Bone bounced over and lunged at the body, prepared to take a huge bite out of the flank. Just as he leaped, something large bowled into him, sending him flying. Confused, he looked up, but one of the Guards, Boulder, was towering over him, snarling.

“You do not go first, Omega,” he growled.

"Okay, listen, we should get our stories straight, all right? If anyone asks - and no one's gonna ask, don't worry - but if anyone asks, tell them as far as you know, the last time you checked, everyone looked pretty much alive, all right? Not dead." -Wheatley
