Also, if I stop in the middle of a sentence, it's because I had to go.
Chapter One
A few things I should tell you.. I live in District Fourteen. Yes, there's such a thing. Also, girls pick berries, roots, and other things, and work as docters and nurses. The boys? Hunters. My name's Legacy Sounders, and my mission in life is to become the first huntress in District Fourteen.
With a huff, I throw my pencil across the room. It smacks against the wall, and clattersto the floor. I snatch my parchment and crumple it, tossing it into a small pile of previously crinkled pages. My leather-bound book lays in front of me, but I still have no pages in it. A knock on my door sends my eyes flashing upward. "Who's there?" my voice cuts through the silence.
"It's me." My friend Stephen calls from behind the old wooden door.
"Oh, come in." he opens the door slightly, and his eyes are twinkling with excitement. I'm suddenly nervous, and a cold sweat drenches my neck; he only looks like that when he's got another idea for me to show people I can hunt, and every time I get injured somehow. "What now?" I ask, suddenly shifting my hair to cover the scar on my cheek self-consciously.
In response, the sixteen-year-old lifts up a bow, quiver, and a couple of throwing knives.
My eyes widen and I leap to my feet. "No." I say simply.
"Why not? This time, I'll make sure you aren't in the way first." he shifts his feet uncomfortably.
I sigh. "FIne. But just this once. And if I get one more injury, you will never show me another weapon. Agreed?" my eyes pierce his like the knives he holds in his hands.
"Agreed." he grins, and pulls me out of my room, down the hall, and out into the vanilla sunshine. The clouds block out some of the light, sending showers of color on the land. I smile at the sky.
