Writing Sample of Mine:
The Cave
I blink, over and over. But it's still there. Like stars, glittering the walls of this damp cave. When I first walked in, I thought I had died, and I was seeing Heaven. Crystals hung from the ceiling, like roots twisting down from trees that never existed. While the hard, black floor seemed cold and uninviting at first, I soon found it to be reflecting the lights just as well as the crystals.
At the back of the cave, there was a small pool of water. It lay there, lights and colors streaming out over the surface of the water. There was not a single man-made light in this underwater paradise, nor was there an opening for the sun. It was as if someone walked in with a rainbow one day, then the colors just stuck. Bouncing around the space forever. I dip my hand in the cool, inviting water, and swish it back and forth. The pool is deep, but I can see the bottom.
It's sandy, but many pebbles dot the bottom. They range in color from brown, to black, to a beautiful crimson red. Some are even speckled with many other varietes. I can spot small crabs, trying desperatly to blend into the rocks. Of course, some do. The only one's that truly stand out are the bright blue ones, their shells splattered with various shades of purple and baby blue. A fish darts in front of me, more following after it.
The fish are about the size of my fingernail, swimming quickly and always in small groups. They are usually gray, but there's a stripe along their sides. The strip flashes various neon colors, and seems to change with each flick of their fin. The colors match those of the cave, and hypnotise me into sitting by this pool a bit longer before I explore more of the cave.
There's not much else in the cave but a cluster of rocks, with a hole in the middle. The opening is to small to squeeze into, but I can see through it just fine. I lean against the smooth, cool rocks and stare in awe at this untouched miracle of nature. There's a waterfall, seeming to appear out of nowhere. Streaks of light and flashes of neon break the cool pattern every so often, making the effect of a liquid rainbow.
The waterfall leads down to a pool just as beautiful as the one I previously examined, but this time I can see fish leaping from the water every few minutes, their bright scales shining in the cool air. Sparkling diamonds and other precious stones line the walls and ceiling, making the whole room look like it's a giant crystal ball.
After several minutes, I tear myself away from the terrific scene. I slip my goggles over my head, and put my mouthpeice back in. Sliding into the small opening I came in from, I take one last look at this hidden cave. Then I go underwaer, and swim for several mintues. Nothing in the reef compares to the beauty of the hidden room. Clambering back onto the boat, my uncle beams at me.
"Find anything in there, kid?" He says with a grin, his bag open and waiting for me to put some glorious treasure in it. I just shake my head.
"Nothing in there but some old rocks and some sand" I lie. I'm not going to let him take away the beauty of that cave, it's just to precious. There's something different about it...and I can't bring myself to give it up.
