. Walking through the kitchen door way he brushed his rough hands over her old height chart etched into the old wooden door frame. He began to reminisce of when she was younger. this earliest measurement was when she was three years old, only two feet and five inches tall. He smiled, that was the year she had her first pet, a fish.
It was a beta. He had fins that looked like they were beautiful paper fans with splashes of golden brown and bright blue streaks along his slender body. Maddi, deciited to name this fish Charlie, after her favorite animated movie character. She loved him dearly, and took the best care of him. There was only one concept she could not get though. Fish do not need walked. The first (and only time) Boyd found Maddie, the sleeves of her little shirt soaked and smelling of fish water, with charlie in her hands. Boyd told her to hurry and put him back in his tank. He then asked her why she did that. She looked at him with little innocent eyes and said,
“Daddy, if I was in a small bowl like that I would be sad, so I wanted to make him happy and take him on a walk.”
Boyd smiled at her and explained to her that fish need water to breath, or else he would be very sad. Maddi nodded and said she understood. The next day he found Charlie in his fish bowl, in her big red wagon being proudly pulled by a happy Maddie . From that day forth she took him on a walk every day until Charlie passed away.
Boyd laughed at the memory of his little girl. He went up the chart to see the next measurement. He wanted to skip it, but he had to look. He read “Maddi at 5 years 3 feet. 6 inches” Boyd cringed slightly. 1997, He remembered that year well, for that was the year that her mother, his beautiful wife, Abigail, left to Sumatra, Indonesia for research on rain forest, but did not return home He began to remember the horrible day he found out. It was September 20th, As he remembered, It was mid-day and the cold wind was nipping at his coat tails. He was getting out of the car and eager to get Maddi out of her car seat and into Air port. They went inside to stand with other people who were ready to greet their loved ones. Boyd but Maddi on his shoulders and had her hold the sign that read “Welcome home mommy! We love you!” Suddenly an announcement came on. All the T.Vs winked in to a synchronized image of the news channel. The woman on camera looked worried but yet serious. She began her message fast and short.
“Message was just received That the A-13 luxury liner has gone down due to low visibility from a ” she paused for a moment and held her hand to the tiny black ear piece to push it closer to her head. “ I have just been informed that the plane went down due to smoke from low visibility from wild fire smoke or commonly known as haze. I will present more information as the day goes on.” and the woman aligned her stack of papers and the tv went back to the normal programing. Almost instantly, the airport became a panic. Cell phone ring-tones and “hello?”s could be heard everywhere. Boyd put Maddi down and tried to fish his cell phone out of his pocket, he flipped open his cell phone and began to dial his wife’s number. As he did the T.V. came on again, the madness in the airport stopped momentarily. It was the news woman.
“I have just received report. that there were survivors, I repeat, no survivors. I am sorry for the loved ones who were lost.”. Boyd’s world went silent, and blackness surrounded him.
