Day 1

"Uugh," I uttered in my half consciousness, my eyes still closed, fighting back the glaring sting of the sun as it bombarded my eyelids. I sighed, and rubbed my head. A huge swollen lump had grew upon my forehead - I must have banged it on something. I didn't think much of it at the time, and stretched my arms exaggeratedly. Wow, I didn't sleep well last night. I tried to open my eyes, but was immediately blinded by the blazing intensity of the sunlight. My eyes clamped shut. That's when the question blatantly struck my mind: Where am I?

I drew my fists to my face and rubbed my eyes, and was buffeted by that stinging sensation that you get when you rub your eyes with sandy hands. I blinked my eyes furiously before wondering why my eyes hurt so bad. There was no sand where I was... I cautiously placed my hands on the ground, to feel the light texture of - sand? Where did this sand come from? I tried to open my eyes again, this time blocking out the sun's gnashing rays with my hand.

I must have been dreaming. Seriously? There was no way that I was on a beautiful, sun-baked beach, surrounded on one side by towering, swaying palm trees and listening to the gentle lapping of the tide on the beach, was there? How on earth I got there I had no clue, but I quickly realised that I couldn't have been dreaming. After all, sand doesn't sting your eyes in your sleep, does it? I stood up slowly, feeling dizzy from the sudden turn of events. I couldn't remember anything - I guess I could blame the bump on my forehead for that. I decided that my first course of action should be to have a better look around.

It truly was a magnificent beach: the scolding, pure white sand spread out from beneath my feet, creeping up into the gaps between my bare toes. It was so pristine and untouched, like nothing I'd ever seen before. After all, I'd only ever been the coast a few times in my life; and on those occasions the sand was dark and dirty, littered with plastic bags that fluttered through the wind like tumbleweed, and dead, deflated jellyfish that looked like they'd been dragged off the set of a sci-fi movie. This was completely different, so peaceful and calm, like the paradise that I'd always wanted to visit but had never had the chance.

I looked up at a palm tree that stood ominously above me, a dozen huge, bulky coconuts hanging from it precariously. The long, gentle fingers of the skyscraping tree billowed in the powerful gust that blew in from atop the calm, still waters of the ocean. The coconuts rattled and clanked in the wind. I heard a crunch, and dived out of the way. With a thud, a huge coconut landed right where I had been sat, the husk split in two. I watched the pallid milk drain into the dry sand, and quickly scooped up the split husk to retain the small amount of liquid that remain inside. "Phew," I breathed silently, realizing that, had I been stuck by the gravid falling nut, I could have been killed right then and there.

I brought the bristly shell, half-filled with creamy coconut milk, to my lips and had a drink. Only then did I realise how parched I was; the moisture in my mouth only served to make it feel even more dry once the sweet drink had slithered down my throat. I sighed, my stomach gnarring at me in it's vacancy. I groaned.
