~Prologue~ Unknown
A young, ill she-dog padded into a cave. She knew she would die here. It was a good place to die.
She closed her eyes, reflecting on her life. She had cared for the young; and four dogs stood out in her mind. Air, water, Earth, and Fire.
With great effort, she pulled herself to her feet and found an area further back in the cave. The cave glowed with the light of crystals; Candentis Crystallis. She pulled of four evenly-sized ones and gnawed the words in the ancient language; Earth, water, Air, Fire. Then on the cave walls she gnawed the image of four dogs, surrounded by stars and bathed in heavenly light. Underneath she wrote the words: Terra, Aqua, Caeli, Ignis : simul ad ultimum.
With that she fell, her breath halted and her heart juddered to a halt.
Terra, Aqua, Caeli, Ignis : simul ad ultimum.
~Chapter One~ Willow
Willow dug into the ground, making a hollow beneath her propped-up cardboard box. "Stay here, ok, Azalea?"
"Ok," Azalea replied, snuggling down in the den, the old tattered red blanket draped over her. She looked fancy, even in this the tatty hideout. Willow sighed. Her family had been rich once. But a jealous fire lord destroyed the house and set it alight to burn. Willow had been around five, and Azalea only a baby. They were the only ones who survived the fire. The only things they had were the blanket and the old box. The box had been stolen from a rubbish heap to become Azalea's cradle, and the blanket had been wrapped around her at the time.
Willow smiled at her younger sister and nuzzled her ear. "I'll be back soon," she promised. It was busy here- the perfect place to pick pocket. She dodged through the crowds, grabbing coins and the remains of food or a box of matches from their fancy pockets. Some even wore wigs, which looked ridiculous.
She then headed down an alley to see what she had. Several silver coins, a box of 3 matches, and some old cheese on a cracker. She looked up at the huge house beside her. It was empty. After gulping down the cheese on the cracker, and stowing the rest of the stuff in a stolen purse that can be hidden under the fur, she jumped through an open window.
There was no pint taking food, but Willow was starving. She opened the ridge and gasped at the wonders inside. Strawberries! Chocolate! And a huge trifle! She gulped down the trifle, licking the dish clean. She got a pot of strawberries and cream to take to Azalea later.
With her belly full, she crept upstairs and came across a money box full to the brim with silver coins. She managed to fit half of it in her purse. In a bedroom she came across a wardrobe full of clothes. She nicked a wig and a warm winter coat before retreating and running back to the hideout.
"Azalea," she whispered. "Azalea, wake up!"
Azalea opened her eyes, and blinked at the clothes Willow had thrown on. "Are you serious?" she said. "Yep," Willow replies, shaking the garments off. "I got you some food, too."
While her sister ate the strawberries and cream, Willow hunted about for some wood and ended up breaking apart and old crate. With a match, she set the wood alight in the hole. "Oh, Willow," Azalea sighed, sitting with the blanket draped around her shoulders. "You're the best sister ever."
