Prologue

The moon cast long shafts of silver into the grassy clearing. Nothing stirred as the night swept on. Grass, mud, and stick dens were outlined with black shadows on the corners of the small meadow. One in particular, the largest mud covered stick den at the far edge of camp, deepest into the camp, had a wail of fear and pain shatter the silence. A black shadow slipped out of a den hidden deep within folded ferns, and pad toward the den with herbs in his jaws. He squeezed into the small gap, and allowed his eyes to adjust to the pitch black den. He spotted the dark brown pelt curled in utter pain. He padded to her. He meowed, quietly, "Take it easy now, Spikepelt."
Spikepelt hissed, "Take it easy? it feels as if the kits are coming out of my stomach, Blackheart! Don't tell me to take it easy!"
The tom's ear twitched. He heard the grass rustle in the opening of the den, and turned to see a large, muscular black tom-cat pad to Spikepelt's side. He licked her head, meowing, "Are you okay? I could hear your wail from the Moon Pond!"
Blackheart pushed past him, and felt the she-cat's flank. He meowed, "Feels like 3, Spikepelt." Before he finished his last word, a muscular golden tom-kit slid into the nest. He mewled as Spikepelt licked him with strong, brisk strokes. She wailed in pain, yet again, as a strong spasm struck her body. Blackheart was aware of the sun rising into the pale sky. He saw the pink rays of the new sun seeping through cracks in the roof of the Nursery. He sighed, and fed the queen herbs to help loosen her hips a bit, and help with the pain. It felt as if it didn't help at all to Blackheart. She was getting weaker and weaker, her contractions becoming shorter and shorter, weaker and weaker as she fought to conceive her kits. Soon, a black she-kit was lying limply in the nest. Spikepelt attempted rising her head, but she failed. Terror flooded over Blackheart as he nudged the black kit toward Spikepelt's muzzle, "Lick her, Spikepelt. She'll die if you don't."
Spikepelt obeyed, weakly lapping at her kit until most of the kit was cleaned. She groaned in pain, no longer strong enough to wail, as a contraction struck her. The black tom beside Blackheart begged beside her to keep strong, for their kits. She mewed, barely a whisper, "It hurts...so much, Grasseye."
Grasseye turned on Blackheart, "Why don't you give her something for the pain!" He snarled.
Blackheart snapped, "Do you think I haven't tried? She can't even lap her own kits, much less eat herbs!" Blackheart sighed with relief as the last kit slid into the nest. A pretty silver she-kit. This time, a fluffy white queen was forced to clean the kit. She cleaned all the kits until they were fluffy, and dry. Blackheart slipped out of the den, Grasseye, pushed out of the den earlier for being rude to Blackheart, was pacing, waves of terror struck Blackheart. Blackheart was shocked, but he was also grieving. He meows, quietly to Grasseye, "I think you should see her, Grasseye..."
A gasp escaped the circle of cats around the nursery. Grasseye looked at him, new waves of horror rippling off the tall tom-cat. He ran to the den, slipping in, ripping fur from his pelt. Blackheart walked back to the den, slipping in silently. He listened to Spikepelt as she weakly meowed to her mate, "I think we should name them now.."
Grasseye mewed, quietly, "Sunkit, and this one will be...."
Spikepelt cut him off as he started to say Spikekit, "Moonkit, in honor of our Clan."
Blackheart felt his heart being torn to bits as the Queen talked to her mate, looked upon her kits, for the last time. Grasseye was obviously holding back tears as he mewed, his voice quivering, "W...What about that one?" He pointed to the black she-kit in the nest. "Spikekit, in honor of my love." Spikepelt sighed, and licked Grasseye on the nose. She lay her head down, and curled up with her kits. Grasseye curled up with her. Blackheart sat in the nest across from them, dismissing the other queens into the clearing with their solemn kits. Just heart beats later, Spikepelt's life ebbed away, her final breath coming in a long, exhausted sigh. Her chest rose, then fell, never to rise again.
