If this isn't allowed, then tell me and I'll delete the topic. All original ideas and rights go to Suzanne Collins. My favorite character is Peeta, so this is from his point of view. I spent a while on it so give me lots of tips and comments, hope you like it.
No, no, no! Run! Run faster! You can outrun them! My amazing dreams quickly turns into a doom-filled nightmare. I feel myself being shaken from the nighmare. I awake to my witch of a mother yelling at me. "Peeta Mellark! You need to get ready!" In a softer voice she says, "This is the day of the reaping."
I glance around the room to see my brothers' annoyed faces. My father walks in and tells my mother to calm down. In reply she shoves stale bread in his hands and tells him to feed the pig. He doesn't object, but gives me a downcast look as he walks toward the door.
I'm about to walk outside when I hear someone at the door, I turn to see who it is. It's Gale Hawthorn. He has the same grey Seam eyes as her. His part of District 12, nicknamed the Seam, is usually full of miners going to work. Not today though. It's the 74th annual Hunger Games. The Reaping is a drawing to see who will compete in the Games, one girl and one boy tribute from each of the 12 districts. The Games are just another way of saying if you organize a rebellion, we'll kill you as easily as your children die in the arena. Only one child can come out alive.
I give Gale some bread for only one squirrel. The odds are not in his favor. He takes tesserae for bread and oil. Tesserae gets your name in one more time for each tesserae you take. They build up and now he has 42 slips with his name in the drawing.
I head outside, earlier than normal, to see if she's there. I walk toward The Meadow. Hiding behind a tree, I see her disappear into the woods. Her dark brown hair tucked into a braid down her back. She is moves swiftly and quietly. Then I see him. Gale walks into the woods as if he couldn't be eaten or arrested any second in there. I wish I could go in and follow her all day. Her sister Prim never goes in there either, I wonder why.
In half an hour I'm dressed in my best clothes and walking toward the town square. I'm herded into a area for 16 year olds. I take note of her in a beautiful dress, which must be her mother's, and her hair in a complicated braid.
Effie Trinket walks onstage and starts,"Hello and welcome to the reaping for the 74th annual Hunger Games! Now to the reapings. Ladies first!" she claws around the ball while I'm thinking Please don't be her, please don't be her, please don't be her! I'm right it's not her, although it might as well be. "Primrose Everdeen!"
I see Prim walk toward the stage, paralized with fear. "I volunteer!" Says a hoarse voice," I volunteer as tribute!" She steps toward the stage and Prim clings to her.
"NO! DON'T GO!!!" Prim yells through tears. Gale drags Prim away and says something I can't hear. She walks bravely toward the stage.
Effie seems elated that there's some action this year. "So what's your name?"
"Katniss Everdeen," she says her voice strong, even in her predicament.
"Katniss Everdean? I bet that was your sister!" Effie says hopefully. Katniss nods. "Well, let's go to the boys now." I could see Katniss desperately hoping it's not Gale. I wasn't concerned until I heard the name. "Peeta Mellark!"
I see a flicker of dread pass over Katniss' face before she can conceal it behind her mask of emotions. I remember the terrible things she used to say about the Capitol, they were true. Once she was old enough to realize she could get in serious trouble for those things, she started masking her emotions. Except I could always see past it.
