Girl from Snowy River

Postby ~Totally Insane~ » Tue Feb 21, 2012 9:39 pm

my female story, inspired by "The Man From Snowy River" by Banjo Paterson.

Dannie sat on the fence looking down at FireFlight. "Hey Flight," she smiled at the unbreakable filly before hopping off and wandering back to the house. She was up before dawn as always, with no grade 7 in this part of the Snowy Mountains she had tonnes of time to work on the farm though she was home schooled by her mother. She filled up Fire Flight's feed bucket with chaff, oats, grains and wheat. She went to grab Country Boy's feed bucket too but then she remember how he'd gotten out and disappeared, she moved her hand to the right and grabbed Destined for Destiny's feed bucket and Sal's feed bucket. Destined for Destiny otherwise known as Destined was flighty like most of her foals. The mare had three foals, a two fillies and a colt. Her first foal was the colt Country Boy know as Buds who'd escaped the breaking yards, second was one of the fillies called Old Sally's Mare known as Sal who spent her days in the stable, last was the youngest of all the foals was Fire Flight known as Flight. She filled up Destined and Sal's feed buckets and walked out to the barn. The barn blocked her view and she couldn't see Fire Flight. "Flight!" she called. Once Flight was broken she could be Dannie's mare, her father had promised her a horse when she reached twelve, Dannie was twelve and she had already asked for Flight. She went into the stable to give Destined and Sal their morning feed, afterwards she saddled up her old mountain pony Hieen and led him out to the mountain post were she tied him up. Tipping the contents of a bucket into a trough under the mounting rail. She turned the corner of the barn and was greeted by Flight's empty paddock. She gasped, dropping the feed bucket she ran over to the broken gate, it had been cute unevenly to make it look like the mare struck it down. "John!" she screamed looking towards the house, her step father John emerged. Dannie was starting to cry by the time he got down to the empty paddock. "Flight's gone!" Dannie cried. "Saddle up, we're getting her back!" John ordered.
Dannie didn't hesitate to race over to Hieen and leap into the saddle. By the time they reached town word had gotten round that the last foal from Destined had disappeared and a group of men waited to help get her back. "Leave the girl behind she won't last on that little pony!" several shouted but Dannie ignored them and raced behind them as they galloped off to the valley where the brumbies would be this time of year. Sure enough the brumbies were there, two familiar horses were in the herd; Flight and Buds. The men cracked their whips and cheered as they gave chase. The Brumbies out witted the stock men whose horses were tired from the hard country chase, dark clouds covered the sky and rain threatened to ruin their game. But Dannie rode her gelding straight after them, through the snow gums and shrubs. She raced after the horses listening, the calls from her step father faded. It didn't take her long, till she was among the mighty mob, cracking her whip and swirling her lasso. The rain hissed down. She whirled 'em round when she reached the river and sent them heading to her home. She cracked her whip at them. Dannie flung her lasso, it tightened around Flight's neck and tied it to her saddle reaching back for the other she lassoed a jumpy colt, home she rode with the horses tied to her saddle.
"Dannie!" the calls of worried stock men rang in her ears as she rode into town where the group had taken refuge, when the foul weather hid the mountains and claimed all who strayed.
"Dannie! You got the mare!" John called riding over to her. "Your mare I mean," he added. "And a little colt? yearling?" he said studying the colt.
"Yes, a beautiful little fellow. Wouldn't hurt to introduce some new blood to the breeding mares?" she asked.
