Rise
I've ventured back to this writing board....
The product of my muse is another story somewhat based on the Warriors books by Erin Hunter. However, you might be interested to know that I have changed things around quite a bit.
Feel free to post your comments and critique.
Some Useful Information
This story takes place in a dense pine forest. The territories are split by a stream that flows from the mountains to the north. This stream is usually only deep enough to give one wet paws. However, snow melt might make the water level rise enough to sweep a small apprentice off their feet. As you move towards the mounains, the forest becomes sparser, the ground becomes rockier, and the air becomes cooler. Cats rarely will venture where the trees get shorter and where the trunks are more than tree-length or two apart.
The cats prey on rodents like squirrels and smaller birds. Every once and a while, an eagle or hawk will be taken down by a larger hunting patrol. Fish is a rare meal for the cats, but it is not unheard of. Elk and deer are often seen roaming through the forest. They are usually harmless, but the cats avoid them anyway. There is the constant threat of badgers, foxes, coyotes, and bears. Also, during the summer and parts of spring and fall humans will be seen to the south where the river widens.
Both camps are similarly made and situated against the side of a rocky ledge. Dens are made of rocks and caves. The walls are created by large boulders.
Two groups of cats share this forest, dubbing each other the Ones to the East and the Ones to the West. They both look up to their ancestors who are known as "The Stars", "The Skies", or "The Eternal Ones." Both groups have the same system of leadership. This system consists of a single leader along with the clan's elders and healers. The elders are the most respected members and often help the leader and healers decipher signs from their ancestors. They also primarily choose the future of each young cat brought into the clan. The leader leads his or her group of cats through any times they may come upon. They fight in battles, help the elders in their duties, name kits going into training, and keep order. Leaders have but one life to live like any other cat and successors are chosen by the stars. This cat is usually kin of the leader and would have otherwise been chosen to become a warrior. The sign is usually given a moon or so after the birth of the chosen cat and that kit starts to shadow the leader as young as 3 moons of age. However, they do not start battle training until they are at least 5 moons old. They take full control of the clan when the current leader dies or retires. If the chosen sucessor is to die, a new sign will be sent and this kit may or may not be kin of the leader. The healers are trained from 4 moons of age to learn the art of healing. Training is continued until the cat retires or dies. They are often soft spoken and smaller than the hunters and warriors in the clan.
The rest of each clan is made of warriors, hunters, and their apprentices. Warriors are usually quite large and strong and most often males are chosen for this rank. They also tend to be arrogant and will rarely associate with the hunters. Their training starts between 5 to 6 moons(whenever they start to bulk up the most) and will continue until the cat is 12 moons old and will often last longer. Hunters are always long-limbed and swift. They are usually considered least significant by the other ranks even though without them, there would be no food. Their training begins at 5 moons and they will learn hunting as well as slight self-defence. Their training lasts at least until they are 12 moons old.
Queens are she cats who are expecting or nursing their kits. They are required to stay in the nursery with their kits until they feed only on fresh kill. Then, they are given the option to return to their duties, which most she cats usually do. The kits will stay in the nursery until their training begins and they are given their full names.
As kits grow and start wandering, the elders and leader will start to keep a close eye on them and will be alert for any signs on what their future holds. Until their path is chosen and they go into training, their name only consists of one part. It is after training starts that they recieve their full name as a full member of the group. A future leader will always be given the prefix, "star". Although it is rare, if a cat chosen by the stars to lead has already recieved their full name, their name will be changed. Usually, clan ranks go through families. If the parents are hunters, their kits will most likely be hunters as well, and so on.
