Chapter Twenty-Nine
The battle begins with a loud clamor of shouts from both armies and roars from Bellatrix. Both armies run to each other into an open plain, weapons in their hands, and Bellatrix jumps into the sky. Our side has wolfani, both human and wolf, and humans. Many :Society fighters are taken by surprise when a wolfani transforms and during that moment of surprise, the wolfani attack and most win without a fight. The humans do not have that element of surprise but most of our humans can wield a blade fairly well because of hunting experience. Pretty soon, however, the :Society knows what to expect and is taking more of us out. I cannot see any of my friends among the throngs of fighting people. I hope that they are alright I turn my focus to the guns.
I need to find a way to take them out. Even though we are well protected, not every inch of our fighters is, and many fall wounded or dead from gun shots. The guns are not only a threat to us, but they also accidently injure and kill people from their own side. Bella swoops down and flames some of the gunmen and one of the guns melts because her fire is so hot. The gunners stop aiming at human fighters upon the battle field, and begin to fire at Bellatrix and me. I hide behind her neck and she climbed upward into the sky and out of range of the bullets.
“How are we going to take out the rest if we can’t get in so close anymore?” Bellatrix questions me and any who are not fighting at the moment but dragging the wounded away from the battle field. Matt responds to us the most quickly.
“Steal a gun. They have so much power that they could take out the gunmen and maybe even a gun. Save most of the bullets for the guns though Bekah and use your arrows for the gunman most of the time,” he tells me through mind communication. “You have got wicked aim with those babies.” I thank him and I like the idea. So do a few other warriors so we decide to go with it.
Bellatrix spirals downward towards the guns again and lets out a smaller flame then last time. It burns several gunmen but leaves the gun harmed. She grabs it in one of her paws and then sails back into the sky. She stops and hovers and tosses the gun in the air.
“Catch,” Bella tells me as it comes my way. I do but it almost knocks me off of her. I rebalance myself and then test out the gun. It feels awkward in my grip so I test it out, aiming at a spot in the trees. It takes me a few times, but I finally hit my mark. I tell Bella to go closer and when we are where I want to be, I aim at one of the guns. It hits is but I am too far away to make much damage.
“We need to get closer!” I shout impatiently to Bellatrix.
“They can hit us then though,” she argues. I sigh angrily, knowing she is right.
“It is the only way we will be able to knock out their guns,” I tell her. She sighs and dives closer, like I asked.
“I hate it when you are right,” she tells me flatly. I smile and laugh at her.
“I don’t,” I say back as we are almost in range. I take aim and wait for Bella to hover again so I have a sure shot at the guns. They haven’t seen us yet, they are focused on the warriors again. I take advantage of that and I shoot at the first gun four times. The first and second shots miss, but the third and fourth hit it. They leave significant damage but not enough to stop the gun or destroy it. I aim again and shoot another four times. This time all four hit and they disable and destroy the gun. I shout in victory, and my arm almost gets hit by a bullet. I curse under my breath and aim at the next gun which is shooting at us now. I fire seven shots this time. Two hit one of the gunners and he falls down dead. I cringe at the sight but remember this is just like hunting. I can’t let them make me prey, I have to stay a predator to stay alive. Five of the bullets hit the gun, jamming its barrel, but I shoot again, destroying it so it can never be used again. There are now only three guns left. I set my gun down and I grab my bow and arrows and decide to take out the people controlling the guns. I take aim and shoot three times in a row. Each arrow finds its mark even though we are so far away and each gunner falls to the ground, dead. I don’t celebrate yet; I still have six more to kill before we can knock out the guns without a problem. I grab new arrows and one by one, shoot them and kill my targets. I feel bile in the back of my throat but I swallow it. I can’t be weak now; my pack and my friends need me. Together, Bella and I take out the guns with bullets and fire before anyone can man them again.
“Nice job,” I praise Bellatrix as I dismount.
“You too Bekah,” she tells me. “Now let’s help our friends so we can be done with all of this inhumane killing.” I agree and I pull my daggers from my boots where my breeches are tucked in. I feel so odd in men’s clothing but I also feel less restricted than I did in a dress.
I run over to Colton when I finally spot him, while Bellatrix takes out large groups of mercenaries and :Society people after telling ours to retreat. Colton is fighting vigorously with a large man. I run to his side to help him and I stab the man’s sword arm. Colton takes advantage of the man’s weakness and stabs him in the chest.
“How’s it going?” He asks me as we both face another opponent.
“Bella and I got all of the guns. Now it’s up to you guys. Bella can’t use her fire in close combat or when our soldiers are there because it would kill them too,” Colton looked happy at first but when I told him about Bella’s problem, his face grew sour. I stab my opponent and he falls to the ground. I take him out of his misery and Colton overcomes his man as well. “Should we have Bella pull out of the fighting?” I ask him before we are attacked again.
“No, just don’t have her attack as much. We still need her, but we can’t lose any men by accident,” Colton tells me. “Have her attack when our men retreat.” I nod in agreement and then tell Bellatrix the plan. She sighs and knows that it is for the best and it is also the best idea we will have in such short notice. She pulls away from us and flies high above us, but not too high to come and help on short notice. I go back to fighting, cutting down people quickly when I think about my anger for the :Society, Gina, Hannah, Kelsey, and Elisha, especially Elisha, that traitorous, evil girl.
I see Elisha fighting one of the wolfani. She has her dagger in her hand, but it is clean and blood free. Then as the wolfani jumps to attack her, she lashes out and catches him in the stomach, her dagger tearing it wide open. The wolfani drops dead and Elisha looks at her bloodied knife, horrified. I scream in rage and run to attack her. The wolfani I didn’t know, but he was one us, kin to me. I swing my dagger at her and she blocks it with her dagger and while I try to swing again, she runs to hide behind a tree.
“Come out and face me you coward,” I shout angrily. She cowers behind the tree for a moment and then comes out and sheaths her dagger.
“I don’t want to fight you,” Elisha pleads with me. “I am sorry. I don’t want to fight anyone. I am so sorry Bekah.” I don’t know why but I believe her.
“Why did you join them then?” I ask her not wanting to believe that she is telling the truth.
“Because I was jealous of you and Colton,” she admits to me. “Colton never really was hanging out with Kelsey. I just told her that a great way to make you angry and hurt you would to kiss her boyfriend that way. She had already been flirting with him of her own accord so it would look more realistic and I knew she would be likely to agree to my plan.” I am not very shocked. I didn’t know any of this, but it didn’t surprise me.
“Where is Gina?” I ask changing the topic. Elisha looks at me gratefully, not wanting to have carried out any more of that previous conversation.
“I don’t know. She was fighting with Hannah and Kelsey, last time I saw her, but they said that she left to go elsewhere in the battle,” Elisha informs me.
“The only way we are truly going to win this battle without any more deaths is to capture and or kill Gina,” I tell her. “I will need your help finding her. Do not let anyone else know that we had this conversation.” Elisha looks shocked but nods her head and runs off. I hope that meant that she would do it. Shrugging that off, I speak to Bellatrix, one-on-one through our minds. “Bella, can you try and find Gina, or at least Hannah and Kelsey?” I inquire.
“Sure, just be careful Bekah, the wolfani need you alive if you are going to save them,” Bella tells me. I sigh recalling the prophecy. Maybe I need to be the one who kills Gina. I fight alongside my fellow wolfani and friends a while longer and as I am about to leave, I see Dustin, Cole’s half-brother leading hundreds of wolves. I smile at him and mock salute him. For once he smiles at me and then his army plunges into battle.
