Chapter One; part one
“Thanksh forth brakefesht, mum,” Shelby called cheerily through her mouthful of pancakes, “they’re great,” she finished, swallowing her food.
“You’re gonna be late for school! Hurry up, I’m not driving you!” her mom called, like usual, her selfish self. Shelby shrugged, and left her mom to take care of the dishes.
“I wasn’t planning on taking the bus anyway,” she laughed, stretching out her secret wings from where they were folded down in her skin. She ran a few steps before taking a powerful leap, and with some hard thrusts of her wings, she was airborne. “Now this- this is first class flying!” she giggled, as she careened on towards school.
“Hey, Rosey!” Shelby called as she walked the last two steps to where her friend was waiting.
“Hey, Shell!” Rosemunde called back, as usual. The bell rang and they walked into class, side by side. Rosey’s mind buzzed, wondering. Should I tell her today? No, better wait- I don’t want her to think I’m a freak!
Rosey and Shelly strolled into class and perched on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their teacher, Mr. Broad. He was the drama teacher, and was about to cast the lead role in the play. Neither girl wanted it, but they were excited nonetheless.
“Settle down, class!” Mr. Broad announced cheerily as he skipped into the room. “As you all know, today is the day that you have all been waiting for- the day I cast the lead role in the play!” The class cheered, excitedly.
Rosey and Shelly exchanged looks- a hint of anticipation. Shelby whispered in Rosemunde’s ear, “I’d laugh if you got the role of the frog prince.”
Rosey replied, “In your dreams, banana breath.” Shelby snickered, jabbing her friend playfully in the side.
“That was a long time ago, and you know it.”
Mr. Broad slipped a white envelope out of his tall brown jacket.
“And now announcing the cast and crew- Donovan, you will be the frog prince. Shelby, you will be the princess. Rosey, I have chosen you to play the enchantress.”
“Hear that? Enchantress he calls me!” Rosey exclaimed.
“Well, don’t get too excited, the “enchantress” is actually an old witch,” Shelby, laughed, covering her mouth to dim the sound. Rosey groaned.
After Drama class, the two girls took their usual routes around the school. Shelby went back to the classroom to feed Chartlomene, the class snake. Rosemunde exited the drama class, room 45 to be exact, and headed for the library, where the girls would meet before they headed home.
They met up and exited through the large bronze doors, and trotted down the narrow steps onto the warm grass. The sun was shining, and the two girls looked up simultaneously at the golden sun. They soaked up the sun’s warm rays and listened as birds sang in the trees. They watched as squirrels chattered and ran up tree trunks. Shelby started singing a happy song from when she was little. Rosey laughed and skipped along, but all too soon it was time to part ways.
