The Uknown
Left, right, left, right; just keep going. Don’t stop, can’t stop. Risa ran through the woods, feeling her lungs burning, her legs getting weak. The baying of hounds and the shouts of angry villagers resonated through the forest, spurring her on as fear drove into her core. One word was branded into her mind, replaying itself over and over again. Witch. But she wasn’t a witch; she had just been trying to help a little girl who had fallen out of a tree. She was bandaging her up and there was a glow…with a flash the girl had been healed. The mother had come out, screaming that she was a witch. Risa shuddered. Everything had happened so fast. The villagers had gathered with weapons and accused her of witchcraft. She was a simple traveler, trying to help a child in need. Now they were chasing her. No. Hunting her like an animal.
The sounds drew closer and Risa pumped her legs harder. If only she could outrun them… She winced as more and more branches bit angrily into her skin. Warmth ran in rivulets down her body. Blood; she thought faintly to herself. Risa stumbled over a root, her arms reached out to cushion the impact. She fell on a sharp stone with a jarring thud. With a sudden abruptness, the calls from the hunters stopped. The forest was eerily silent. Nothing stirred. On her hands and knees, she took gasping breaths. Perhaps they gave up.
Something grey rolled through the leaves behind her. Risa started coughing. It was smoke; they were trying to either smoke her out or burn her alive. Gagging, she staggered to her feet and continued running. She had to get out of here before she died from smoke inhalation. Red tendrils flickered in her peripheral vision. The fire was spreading too fast for her to escape. She was going to die here; all alone in a foreign land with no one to relay the message back to her family. Despair dragged her down as she felt herself losing all energy in her limbs. One last burst of energy pushed her forward a few more steps. And then she was falling.
The harsh night air whipped in her face as she fell like a rock. Shock washed over her as she hit the freezing water with a painful gasp. Panicked, Risa clawed the water, trying to push herself to the surface for air. Darkness flooded her vision as her lungs screamed for oxygen. Risa’s vision dimmed and she felt herself start to drift. So this is how it felt to die, she thought absently. Before she blacked out, a pair of red eyes gazed back at her.
Something wet and rough swept across her face. Risa blearily opened her eyes and winced in pain. As her eyes focused, her gaze rested on a giant leopard and a man with red eyes in strange garb staring at her. One thought ran across her mind. I belong here.
