Dear Grapevine,
Sunrise came, staining the sky red and pink. Lotus and I had been hiking through the woods all morning, keeping to the thick undergrowth and remaining shadows so as to not be discovered.
"We will rest here," Lotus announced, plopping down onto a fallen tree. I looked around; we were in a thickly forested swamp. I shuddered, for I hated places like this because I was afraid a monster or some other grotesque swamp-dwelling creature would rise up out of the water and kill me.
"Are you sure?" I asked wearily, kicking some dead leaves around. "The cops might catch up to us..."
Lotus snickered. "If they do, I'll be ready." She brandished a switchblade. "My dad gave this to me the day he sent me to the institute," she said, admiring the shiny blade. "He said it was for in case I got attacked or---" a low growl cut her off.
It seemed to be coming from behind me. I turned around slowly and heard Lotus gasp; the first time I'd ever witnessed her show fear. THIS THING was staring straight at us.
I started to back away, not taking my eyes off the creature. Its ratlike appearance confused me, for it had the body of a dog. Behind me I heard Lotus mutter, "mutated."
The rat-dog started to stalk toward me, its ruby-red eyes glimmering in the morning sunlight. I noticed that strangely, this animal wore a crown.
"Why is it wearing that?" I asked, my pack paws hitting the log Lotus was sitting on. I pictured her shrugging and heard her stand up.
"Hell if I know," she said, padding forward to stand beside me, switchblade pointed toward the beast. "Maybe because it's a royal pain in the---"
The creature silenced her with a deafening snarl which sounded suspiciously like the squeaking of a rat. Then again, this thing was part rat.
I bared my canines, returning the sound. Lotus lunged, slashing the creature's face with the switchblade. Blood sprayed across the decaying leaves and foliage on the ground, staining them a deep red. The rat-dog sprang forward with a hidious battlecry, locking its teeth into Lotus's ear. I leapt to defend her, taking the switchblade out of her paw (earning a cry of protest from her) and stabbing the creature between its shoulder blades. It released Lotus immediately and cried out, falling to the ground in a bloody heap as I drove the blade deeper.
I withdrew the weapon, wiping it clean with my scarf (much to my own dismay) and handing it back to Lotus, who took it back gingerly and continued to stare. We watched as the rat-dog's body shuddered one last time and then lay still.
"Wow," the green she-dog breathed, flicking her wrist and shoving the blade back into her jacket pocket. "That was... interesting." Her paw moved up to touch her injured ear. "I hope I don't get rabies from that thing."
I couldn't help but laugh. She glared at me, making me stop. "So," I said after a couple seconds, "tell me about those 'mutations.'" Lotus shook her head. "I'll tell you when we get out of this... this..."
"I get it," I said, cutting her off. She shot me a look of daggers again before turning away.
"Let's go," she said. I followed her rather hastily, casting one last glance at the dead rat-dog.
How can something end up so ugly?
