Dear Grapevine,
Lotus and I eventually made it into the city. We jacked a couple bicicles from the high school and rode them into the subdivision where my house was located.
"What street was it?" Lotus asked, stopping her bike.
"One-twenty-five Red Oak Street," I replied, continuing on past Lotus with confidence. I was desperate to see my family again, especially Isa since I heard she was pregnant. We rode up to a beige house with a white truck in the driveway. I hopped off my bike and let it fall to the concrete, running up to my house. I banged on the door three times, seeing as we didn't have a doorbell. Lotus walked up beside me.
"This place? Are you sure? It's kinda... run-down," she said. Lotus was right: the lawn was overgrown, and the shrubs that bordered the house needed to be trimmed badly. The sides of the house had splotches of rust stains on them from the summer humidity. To anyone else, this house looked like a place where penniless pups would live, but to me, it was home, and I was about to make a defensive comment when the front door flew open. I was surprised to see Dad, for he never gets off the couch to do anything but get food.
"Vega?" he said, blinking. "Is that really you?"
I face-pawed, and before I could reply, Lotus was speaking. "Of course it's Vega! What, you don't recognize your own daughter?" she snapped. Dad's eyes narrowed and he regarded Lotus with hatred.
"I knew that," he snarled, stepping outside and closing the door behind him. Lotus and I backed up, not all that trusting of his intentions. "Vega," he said, turning his attention to me. "why are you here? The institute wasn't supposed to release you. Ever." I wanted to punch him, to tell him that they would let me out.
"I refuse to die there," I said with equal malice. My dad broke into a hidious fit of laughter, and I saw Lotus make a face. When he had recovered, Dad continued,
"You shouldn't be here, you ruthless killer. I'm calling the police and having them take you back there right now!" He ran back inside, but before he could close the door, Lotus was there, holding it open.
"Call the police, and Vega won't be the only killer here," she growled. My dad's face held an expression of disbelief and what I deciphered as fear. I found this rather amusing, considering Dad was never afraid of anything.
Without speaking, I invited myself inside. The house was the same as I'd left it; the dishes were piled high in the sink, the floor had stains from almost every food and drink you could think of, the paint on the walls was peeling, and the narrow hallway leading to all the bedrooms was still dark as ever.
Home.
I started down the hall when I heard a familiar voice say my name.
"Vega?"
I turned around.
"Donovan?" Without thinking, I shot across the living room like a comet and hugged my brother so tight I thought he'd explode. He returned the embrace more calmly, his dark eyes gleaming with amusement.
"Welcome home, sister," he said.
I only hugged him tighter in reply. When we broke away, Lotus was standing beside us, glaring malevolently at Dad, whose glare in return was no different.
And then it happened.
It happened so fast that I barely had time to register it.
A loud bang shook the walls of the house, and Dad fell to the floor; a small pool of blood forming around his body.
