Half-Blood (Wolf Story) ~ Please Read!

Postby Charias » Sun Jan 29, 2012 1:09 pm

This is the first story I'm writing properly! It's about a wolf-dog called Naysa who, after living with a loving teenage boy for all her life, has to be released into the wild when new laws are passed.

Naysa is a sort of mutt. Her mother was a mixture, but no one ever really knew her breed, and her father was a wolf. She looks like a normal wolf but is very muscular.

I hope you enjoy the story! I would really appreciate constructive critisism and comments! I will try to write more as often as I can!

I put my paw on the window, then turned around to look at Boy, who was staring out at the beautiful evergreen forest that zoomed past. I whined loudly. Boy looked at me, trying to grin.

"You want some fresh air?" he whimpered, a tear sliding down his cheek. "Dad, can you open the window?" he asked the alpha human, who seemed to understand Boy's pain.

"For Naysa? Sure", he replied.

The window slid away, and I stuck my head out of the window. I was suddenly buffeted with all of the scents and sounds of the wild forest, and a freezing cold wind too. But it was worth the cold to feel such freedom. I looked on in awe at the dense carpet of spruce that coated the leaf-strewn mud, and the majestic white birch trees that stood high above the forest in pride. A graceful osprey soared through the sky. I barked at a flurry of birds that scattered as we sped by.

I glanced back at Boy, my face one of pure happiness. Boy, however, looked depressed. I immediately went over to comfort him, cuddling up beside him and kissing his cheek. He looked at me solemnly, then hugged me tight. I could feel warm tears on my shoulder. I wished that I knew what he was so upset about.

He weeped into my neck. "I love you so much Naysa. What am I going to do without you?"

"It's okay. She'll be happier in the wild." The alpha human tried to console boy, but it didn't do much good.

I whimpered with him. I just wished I had knew what was wrong.

"This is a good spot" alpha human turned to look at Boy, who was bawling in pain.

"Okay..." Boy sighed sadly.

He opened his door then came and let me out. He wiped away his tears and hugged me again before he let me have a run.

I leaped out of the truck, and pounced through the scratch grass, chasing the butterflies and crickets that, startled, took to the sky in overwhelming parades of colour. I pranced to the sky with the golden sun striking my back. It was so fun. If only I had knew what was to come, I would have looked as miserable as possible, but there I was pouncing through the swaying shrubs in utter happiness.

By called me over to the truck, and I was more than eager to sprint straight into him and plough him onto the bramble-covered ground. He looked into my eyes and kissed my nose. I licked his face until it was red, then he shoved me off him and climbed up onto his feet.

He held my collar on both sides of my neck, looking me in the eyes. He spoke so quietly I could barely hear: "I love you Naysa. More than you could possibly imagine. I love you more than anything else I have, you are my whole life. But I have to let you go. You're a wolf - you don't deserve to be trapped in a house all day and night on your best behavior, you deserve the freedom to run with the wind wherever it takes you, to find a pack, hunt, play, maybe start a family of your own some day, too. I have to let you go. Never forget me, okay. I'll never forget you."

He turned his back on me and walked away. I followed, licking his hand as it swayed by his side, but he pushed me away. He wouldn't even look at me.

"Stay Naysa. Stay..."

He climbed into the truck and drove away, leaving only a cloud of dry dust behind him.

It is impossible to describe my feelings at that point. I was shocked, confused, heartbroken, scared, lonely and distraught at the same time. Panic gripped me, digging its dark, sharp claws into my soul. Lost. Alone. Abandoned. Betrayed.

I swung my head from one side to the other, trying to think. I couldn't get my thoughts straight. My mind was in chaos. I threw back my head and let out a mournful howl. It echoed between the impenetrable forest, rattling the branches.

I knew there was no chance of me being able to catch up with the truck now. I had to find shelter for the night. The forest hardly seemed welcoming, but at least the thick roof of leaves would keep the rain off me. I stood at the brink of darkness, knowing that if I entered those dark woods, I would never leave again.

----------

Navigating the eerily quiet forest was difficult - I kept getting my paw caught under gnarled tree roots that seemed more like tentacles trying to drag me back into the abyss of darkness. I couldn't see the sky, I didn't know what time it was, but I was getting exhausted.

I had been traversing the rough terrain for an hour before I finally lost hope. I was trapped in a world so different to my own with no idea how to survive. How could I possibly live there? I lay down in defeat under the drooping branches of a pine tree, trying to get some rest.

I couldn't sleep. I was worried. I was cold and alone, and sharp pine needles were digging into my sides. And I was hungry. My stomach growled fiercely at me, demanding nutrients that I just didn't have. I didn't even have the skill to catch some prey.

Eventually I managed to drift off to sleep, only to be haunted by disturbing nightmares throughout the night.

I woke up with a yelp. Another nightmare. It was even darker now, the shadows filled with unrecognizable silhouettes crouching in wait to pounce on me. Something cawed in the distance. I flinched. A raven strongly swooped from the treetops. But I felt another presence in the endless blackness.

A twig snapped under a light foot. Something growled in frustration, only a few meters away from where I slept. I flinched. There was someone... something there. Perhaps it was stalking me, getting ready to pounce. No... nothing hunts a wolf. But I was no wolf, I didn't belong there. I was a house dog and I knew it. That was going to be one long night. Somehow, foolishly, I guess, I managed to get back to sleep.

I could hear something breathing. I could feel an angry presence stood over me. I shut my eyes closed tight, hoping it was just another nightmare; but it felt real.

"Look at it. Disgusting demon, let's just kill it now!" something sniggered in disgust.

"Please don't..." I whispered desperately. I opened my eyes slowly, dreading what would meet my glance.

I was surrounded. By wolves. About ten of them stood around me, either snarling or writhing in disgust. The leader of the pack, a huge, jet black male with a face permanently decorated with scars, stood over me, staring me straight in the eyes. His teeth were bared, and his expression one of absolute hatred.

"What are you doing here, you filthy half-blood? This is our land", he growled. "Answer me or I'll kill you right now."

"I'm lost. I didn't know this was your territory... Please, just let me leave. I don't want any trouble..." I whimpered softly, avoid his ice-cold gaze.

"If I see you here ever again, I'll-" He was interrupted by another wolf, a beautiful brown and white female. She stood between me and the huge, bad-tempered wolf boldly.

"Do not let her leave", she spoke calmly, looking at the aggressive male.

"Are you mad? She's a demon, she's not welcome here!" the wolf replied in a rage.

"I've had a vision. You cannot let her leave", the female wolf said softly.

"Is she an enemy?"

"No. Come with me." The kind wolf looked down at me with understanding eyes. I was quick to get up and follow her away from the fuming wolf pack.

She lead me away between the trees to a small cave without a word. Only there did she start to talk again.

"My name is Dusk. I'm the alpha-female of our pack. And that big black wolf that almost killed you before, he's the alpha-male. His name is Darkfall. Do not confront him. Do as he says and maybe he won't kill you."

"Why didn't you just let him? I'm no use to you. I can't fight, I can't hunt, I can't do whatever else you wolves do."

"I had a vision. Last night. You were in it."

"A vision? What do you mean?" My head was tilted to the side. Confused.

"During the night, I see things. We all do, but only a few of of see what is true."

"What did you see? What happened?"

"You saved us."

"How could I save you? You're wolves, I'm just a dog. Why would you need protection by me? I cant even fight!" I was so confused, and scared too. I never trusted wolves, but something seemed different about Dawn. She was wiser than the others, and a lot less vicious. She looked up at me, grinning now.

"I shall train you to fight."

----------

Dawn lead me to a small clearing in the forest. The ground was dusty and clear, imprinted with paw prints and tainted with blood. Many wolves gathered around, showing me their fangs. Their hackles were raised, and the fit on their backs stood up like a porcupine's quills.

"I don't want to fight", I whimpered, looking at the wild-eyed wolves that crouded round the fighting ring.

"You don't have a choice."
