It is impossible to describe my feelings at that point. I was shocked, confused, heartbroken, scared, lonely and distraught at the same time. Panic gripped me, digging its dark, sharp claws into my soul. Lost. Alone. Abandoned. Betrayed.
I swung my head from one side to the other, trying to think. I couldn't get my thoughts straight. My mind was in chaos. I threw back my head and let out a mournful howl. It echoed between the impenetrable forest, rattling the branches.
I knew there was no chance of me being able to catch up with the truck now. I had to find shelter for the night. The forest hardly seemed welcoming, but at least the thick roof of leaves would keep the rain off me. I stood at the brink of darkness, knowing that if I entered those dark woods, I would never leave again.
----------
Navigating the eerily quiet forest was difficult - I kept getting my paw caught under gnarled tree roots that seemed more like tentacles trying to drag me back into the abyss of darkness. I couldn't see the sky, I didn't know what time it was, but I was getting exhausted.
I had been traversing the rough terrain for an hour before I finally lost hope. I was trapped in a world so different to my own with no idea how to survive. How could I possibly live there? I lay down in defeat under the drooping branches of a pine tree, trying to get some rest.
I couldn't sleep. I was worried. I was cold and alone, and sharp pine needles were digging into my sides. And I was hungry. My stomach growled fiercely at me, demanding nutrients that I just didn't have. I didn't even have the skill to catch some prey.
Eventually I managed to drift off to sleep, only to be haunted by disturbing nightmares throughout the night.
I woke up with a yelp. Another nightmare. It was even darker now, the shadows filled with unrecognizable silhouettes crouching in wait to pounce on me. Something cawed in the distance. I flinched. A raven strongly swooped from the treetops. But I felt another presence in the endless blackness.
A twig snapped under a light foot. Something growled in frustration, only a few meters away from where I slept. I flinched. There was someone... something there. Perhaps it was stalking me, getting ready to pounce. No... nothing hunts a wolf. But I was no wolf, I didn't belong there. I was a house dog and I knew it. That was going to be one long night. Somehow, foolishly, I guess, I managed to get back to sleep.
I could hear something breathing. I could feel an angry presence stood over me. I shut my eyes closed tight, hoping it was just another nightmare; but it felt real.
"Look at it. Disgusting demon, let's just kill it now!" something sniggered in disgust.
"Please don't..." I whispered desperately. I opened my eyes slowly, dreading what would meet my glance.
I was surrounded. By wolves. About ten of them stood around me, either snarling or writhing in disgust. The leader of the pack, a huge, jet black male with a face permanently decorated with scars, stood over me, staring me straight in the eyes. His teeth were bared, and his expression one of absolute hatred.
"What are you doing here, you filthy half-blood? This is our land", he growled. "Answer me or I'll kill you right now."
"I'm lost. I didn't know this was your territory... Please, just let me leave. I don't want any trouble..." I whimpered softly, avoid his ice-cold gaze.
"If I see you here ever again, I'll-" He was interrupted by another wolf, a beautiful brown and white female. She stood between me and the huge, bad-tempered wolf boldly.
"Do not let her leave", she spoke calmly, looking at the aggressive male.
"Are you mad? She's a demon, she's not welcome here!" the wolf replied in a rage.
"I've had a vision. You cannot let her leave", the female wolf said softly.
"Is she an enemy?"
"No. Come with me." The kind wolf looked down at me with understanding eyes. I was quick to get up and follow her away from the fuming wolf pack.
She lead me away between the trees to a small cave without a word. Only there did she start to talk again.
"My name is Dusk. I'm the alpha-female of our pack. And that big black wolf that almost killed you before, he's the alpha-male. His name is Darkfall. Do not confront him. Do as he says and maybe he won't kill you."
"Why didn't you just let him? I'm no use to you. I can't fight, I can't hunt, I can't do whatever else you wolves do."
"I had a vision. Last night. You were in it."
"A vision? What do you mean?" My head was tilted to the side. Confused.
"During the night, I see things. We all do, but only a few of of see what is true."
"What did you see? What happened?"
"You saved us."
