EDIT:
Just finished the first chapter of my newest story... Comments would be great!
I gripped Charlotte’s hand as we pushed through the crowd of panicking people, dragging her along. I wasn’t sure where to take her, so long it was away from here. I could hear Charlotte’s cries as she insisted we go back and look for mom and dad. I pulled her along, ignoring her complaints. “Ali, I won’t leave without them!” She was crying now, and I had no choice but to stop and comfort her. I knelt down and gave her a hug. “We have to keep moving.” I breathed, brushing her curly black hair out of her face. “Mom and dad.... they’ll be alright.” I dragged her along as fast as we could, desperate to find safety. I followed the crowd to the airport, where the rescue planes where probably ready for takeoff. Our beloved city would be in ruins soon. I blinked back tears. We entered the airport just in time. A series of bombs exploded behind us, probably killing many citizens of Avia. I held Charlotte back as she struggled against my grip. “Mom and dad could have been in there!” she screeched, tears flowing from her eyes. I pulled her inside and I led her deeper into the airport. It was the city’s emergency exit, the only exit. You can’t leave Avia unless you travel by air. The city is protected by a large stone wall that keeps enemies out and citizens in. Another bomb went off, and the airports shiny floors cracked in too. I screamed and pulled Charlotte out of the way just in time, but she pulled away. “There they are!” she exclaimed, pointing to the other site of the crack. Before I could even see what she was pointing at, she was out of my arms, across the crack and into someone else’s. My parents. They motioned for me ungently, but the crack was widening, and I didn’t want to fall through. I shook my head at them, yelling, “I can’t!” But I doubt they heard me. A swarm of people ran past me, blocking my view. I called out to Charlotte, but something hit me hard on the head, and I was knocked out.
I woke up in a completely white room with nothing in it, except a chair in the corner with a fat man with a white coat sitting on it. I tried to sit up on my cot, but restraints on my arms and legs held me back.
I started to freak out.
“Charlotte!” I screeched. The fat man jumped out of his chair and dropped a clipboard. He was obviously unaware that I was awake. I pulled at the restraints, but they only grew tighter around me. The fat man waddled over to me and stuck a needle in my arm, and I instantly fell asleep.
I woke up again in the same room, with the same man sitting in the wooden chair. I was angry at him for drugging me. This time, he was prepared when I roused. He had another needle in his hand and was watching me intently. He put his stubby finger to his lips and shushed me. I didn’t move, or struggle. “Lets get these restraints off, shall we?” he suggested, smiling as if we were old friends. Instantly, as if his voice controlled them, the restraints opened and I was free to move. I jumped up and massaged my wrists. “Where’s Charlotte?” I demanded, staring at the fat man accusingly. He smoothed his red curls nervously. “Who?” he stammered. He flipped through the pages of his clipboard, reading furiously through the jumble of notes he had written. “Oh, you mean your sister!” he exclaimed, returning the clipboard into the inside pocket of his lab coat. “Yes, yes, she’s fine.” He was trying to reassure me, but I wasn’t too quick to believe him. “Follow me,” he mumbled, waving his hand over the far wall. Instantly, a keyboard appeared with numbers 0 through 9. He punched in a code and the wall slid up easily. I jumped back, startled. “What is this place?” I asked, examining the door as I walked through it. It shut immediately after we passed. “All in good time, all in good time.... Ali.” he finished after looking through several pages of notes to find my name. I rolled my eyes. I followed him through a long, bright corridor. Periodically, a few doctors or people in white lab coats would pass by, hurrying through rooms with trays of shiny scientific instruments. I guessed that I was in some sort of science lab. I followed the fat man through rows and rows of rooms, until finally we came to a room labeled ‘Main’. He waved his hand and punched in the code, and the door slid open. The doors here creeped me out, the way they opened so effortlessly. Inside the main room, I found 24 chairs, in two rows of twelve. All the seats were filled but two; one for the fat man and one for me. The seats were filled with 12 kids my age, all sitting next to a man or woman in identical white lab coats. They seemed as confused as I did. As I scanned the room, I noticed a few kids that I had seen in the airport. My hopes lifted. If people from Avia were here, that meant that my family was, too. I took my seat next to a big buff scientist in a lab coat that was too small for him. He took one look at me and chuckled. I sat down awkwardly, avoiding his gaze. The fat man who had led me here plopped down beside me, panting hard. A deep voice boomed from speakers that hung above as soon as he sat down. “Greetings, children of Avia,” I jumped, so did the kids around me. The scientists chuckled at our surprise. They seemed to be getting a kick out of us. The wall that we were facing suddenly slid open, and another scientist walked in with a headset on. His voice echoed as he continued. “to Animafia. The underground city of Avia.” It took some time for me to register this information in my head. We were underneath Avia? Millions of questions formed in my mind. Why wasn’t Animafia destroyed in the bomb attack? Why has no one heard of Animafia? Who is this man and why are we in a science lab? But the question that irked me most of all, was where was my family. The newcomer was a rather old man, with cold black eyes and a crooked smile. “I am Dr. Kelp, the leader of the Animafia operation.”
Kelp went on to explain about the history of Animafia. How it was founded eleven years ago, when an earthquake broke out because of an experiment they were doing in an aboveground lab. The president of Avia, President Oak, ordered them to stop their experiments. But instead they reached an agreement that they could continue their research if they moved to an underground facility and no one could ever find out about it, and live to tell the tale.
“And so this brings us to todays little, um, accident, with the bombs and such. Just a failed attempt to complete our experiment. But thats alright, we learn from our mistakes. And it will be much easier with Avia out of the way.” I was fuming with rage. I leapt up, knocking my chair over. “It was you?” I ask, pointing my finger accusingly at Kelp. “You blew up our city, and you think its just ‘alright’?” Kelp’s eyes widened, but he regained his cool and replied blankly, “Yes, but you’re lucky and we decided to save your life and let the other people die a horrid death.” He grinned, showing his yellow, crooked teeth. “Now sit down, or you can join them.” I picked my chair up off the ground and sat down. “Now, where was I... bombs, horrid deaths,” his eyes bore into mine. “Oh yes, our experiments. You lucky twelve have been selected at random today to be part of Animafia’s special experiment. And if you cooperate, no one gets hurt.”
