As the machine that held Aaron spun around wildly, so did the room. Papers flew, lab coats were thrown backward, and our hair drifted in the heavy wind. We stood, unknowing what would happen.
I chose the moment to think. How was Aaron communicating with me? Why, me? And how could he have known my real name? Xura Stryker. I hadn't told anyone besides Andrew, so it didn't make any sense.
Eventually, the machine began to slow to a stop. We all held our breath as the capsule opened and smoke poured out in waves across the ground. Everyone was quiet as a figure appeared in the smoke.
Matt: Aaron? Aaron stepped out from the mist. His eyes looked... Different somehow. Like, they changed.
Andrew: That's inhumane. His voice dripped with utter disgust and revolt toward Daniel.
Daniel: Sorry it doesn't please you, your highness He snickered. Andrew gave him a venomous glare.
Andrew: What makes you think I won't tell my father about this? Matt: Because he's going to stick a chip in your neck, not activate it, erase your memory, and send you on your way like you never saw a thing. After all, that was the original plan. Daniel: Brilliant! Why haven't I met the two of you before? She knows the right questions, and you know the right answers. He chuckled to himself.
Daniel: So what are you then? Partners? Lovers? Me: EwMatt: UghAndrew: *eyeroll* They're siblings. Daniel: Siblings? He actually seemed surprised for the first time, and lifted his eyebrow.
Daniel: assumably, you have smart parents- the real question here though is, why are you stealing from an innocent old man like me? You could be scientists or politicians, laywers... Heck! You could even rule a country if you wanted to. I rolled my eyes.
Me: You're hardly innocent. And I'm a thief, Matthew isn't. Why, is none of your business. Daniel: It'll be my business soon enough. There was a glint in his eye, like he was having fun. He reared back toward Aaron.
Daniel: Aaron, my boy! I apologize for the rude interruption, How are you feeling? Aaron looked down at his hand, and turned from human to metal. I flinched, it seemed too unreal and caught me by surprise.
I felt a slight pain on the far side of my brain. Heh, pain and brain- rhymes. Right. Anyway, back to being serious and stuff.
And a little voice ring again in the back of my head.
Help, bring me back. Help meThe voice went from tiny to overbearing in seconds.
How? How can I help? I thought back hoping for a response. But the phrase only repeated, as though it were captured in that single thought.
Aaron turned back into a human and cast his gaze toward Daniel.
Aaron: Better than ever. Daniel: Good! Glad to hear it. The voice was screaming now, sending tears down the side of my cheeks from the pain.
Me: How?! How?! I'll help- just tell me how! But for the love of every packaged food product- Get out of my head! Matt: Scarlett! What's wrong? Daniel: Great. More drama. Just what this needs. Andrew: You're all nut jobs. Every last one of you. Daniel: Could someone go wipe his memory? I'm sick of listening to him. Someone began to drag Andrew away as he kicked and screamed. But it didn't change the fact that the voice in my head was completely overwhelming. I fell to my knees.
Me: Please... Just. Make it stop...I whimpered, eyes wide with pain. My gaze was transfixed on Aaron, after all, it was his voice that patronized me, Aaron returned the stare. At first, he was expressionless but as he continued look, his face became an array of emotions and the voice stopped. For a second it looked like he had whispered sorry, but I must've second-guessed myself
Me: What was that? I stood up shakily.
Daniel: It was enough for me. It's about time break up the crowd here. Guards, take away Matthew. Me: No! Matt: It's alright, X- er.. Scarlett. It's not your fault. Me: but it is my fault...I felt torn apart as I watched them drag Matthew away.
Daniel: As for you, my dear-Me: You monster! How dare you? The tabletops started shaking beside us.
Daniel: Simmer down. You should be more concerned about yourself as of now. Me: Ugh. Daniel: I believe the best way to test Mr. Cliffton's new abilities, would be to pair him against a worthy opponent. He looked over at me.
Me: You're joking, right? Daniel: Well, I believe it's you shaking the room. Besides, you'll only get thrown around a bit. He smiled and nodded at a guard to release me. The guard unlocked my hand cuffs. I rolled my wrists a few times, but flinched when I felt something pinch my neck.
Me: What was that? Daniel: Insurance. That pinch is nothing compared to what I can do. I wanted to say something but there was nothing left. I didn't know what to do anymore.
Daniel: Alright, you two youngsters can have the room to yourselves. Have fun, I'll be watching. He walked out. Just like that. The tables continued to shake as I felt fury burn inside me. But looking at Aaron, I only saw compassion... Until he made the first move.
I dodged a punch sent for my left eye by grabbing Aaron's arm and twisting it. He let out a small grunt, and his body coated itself in metal- forcing me to lose my grip. I spun backwards, disoriented.
He took the opening, diving at me and forcing me to the ground. His weight was overbearing because of how heavy the metal had made him.
Me: You can stop this, Aaron. You don't have to become this.I was able to use telekinesis to hit him in the head with a beaker and roll away.
Me: I know you're a victim, and it isn't fair. Please don't be Daniel's pawnI stood and ran across to the other side of the room. Aaron met my gaze squarely and full of emotion.
Aaron: I am no pawn! I chose this life! His eyes lied but every part of him seemed to believe that. He lifted a table and threw it at me.
I screamed and the table froze in front of me. I had never been so happy about my telekinesis.
Me: That autumn day, 2010, Jessica Karter, your first real kiss! It was on a date at the movies, your mother told you to bring breath spray. What? How did I know that?
Aaron: Wha-what? I threw the table to the side.
Me: Come on, Aaron! Remember! Aaron: No. I don't know anyone named Jessica, you're crazy. Me: Tell me something I don't know. But I'm right about this. I extended my hand toward him.
Me: I can help you remember. He stared at me for a moment, before deciding to run at me and hit me in the gut.
Me: Ungh! I was knocked into the wall. The world flashed black and white, I blinked it away.
Me: I won't fight you, Aaron. That little boy who won every soccer game, but lost state championship. You thought you lost the love and respect of your father too, maybe that's why he treated you like you didn't exist. He punched me in the jaw, causing a large popping sound to ring out in the room.
It was almost like this information was being given to me, all of these memories- his memories- flashed through my mind like messages.
Me: Your father. Denying you every chance to get close to him, robbing you of a normal life. But, Aaron, even your life was more normal than mine. And you became someone better. He bitterly threw me into the wall. My wrist crunched beneath my weight as I pressed it between myself and the wall. I let out a yelp of pain and blinked away tears.
Me: And that girl. That girl on the playground you never stopped thinking about. Oh you regretted ignoring her after that little kiss you shared, the kiss that meant the world to her. Even though it was so long ago, and an age that didn't even matter- preschool. I wearily stood up, I knew both sides of this story. He kicked me down.
Aaron: Enough! Shakily, I pushed off my right arm to look up at him.
Me: And she never stopped thinking about you. She spent years wondering what happened to that boy, that boy who she came to school dressed nicely and with her hair done for. She was so affected by her first feelings of love, she applied them to her life at home. Rejection. A tear traveled down the side of his cheek. He was surprised by this, and wiped it away.
I tried standing again, but he kicked me down once more. I snatched his leg and made him fall to the floor. I used this small opportunity to crawl away. In no time at all he was standing again, and he grabbed me by the neck.
Aaron: I don't know what your game is but I-Me: It's no game, Aaron. Tears traveled down my eyes and onto his hand as he held me by the neck.
Me: Ashlee. Aaron, I'm Ashlee. And it's okay. It's okay, you don't have to regret anything. I turned out... Sort of alright. And I'm right here. He softened.
Aaron: Ashlee? But-but your name is Scarlett. His grip loosened.
Me: You think I'd use my real name? He cast his gaze away.
Aaron: How do I know it's you? And now his grip is tight again. Fantastic.
Me: Playground, In the red tube. Teacher saw us, you never spoke to me again. Also, we were in a class together teaching us about the shades of the moon. He let out a half laugh, and by that time I could hardly breath and the world became a series of colors around me.
Me: you're c-choking meHe realized this suddenly and let me go. Then he cried out in pain, and clutched his head. I felt his pain, and it overlapped everything I was already experiencing.
Daniel, at that moment, ran into the room.
Daniel: What have you done?! Me: I-I made him remember. I winced and rolled onto my back.
Daniel: Blue Frost. Aaron removed his hands and glared at Daniel.
Aaron: Not anymore, old man. Daniel: Now, Aaron... come on, let's be reasonableAaron: The time for reason is over.Daniel smiled, laughed, and pulled out a switch from his pocket.
Daniel: I'll be the judge of that. Now, if I press this button, your new girlfriend over there gets knocked unconscious, with a memory wipe from the last hour. Aaron hesitated.
Daniel: So what're you going to do? Beat me or save her? And remember, she's already suffering from the injuries that you've caused her. She could be out for days. Reluctantly, with hate in his eyes, Aaron changed directions toward me.
Daniel: That's what I thought. He ran out the door as Aaron knelt down beside me.
Aaron: Ashlee, are you alright? Me: Call me XuraHe smiled.
Aaron: Geez, you're a girl of many names. Me: It's complicated. Aaron: I know. He seemed surprised to say that.
Me: Are my memories going through your head? He gave me a confused glance.
Aaron: ... Yes. ???: I believe I can explain that. We craned our necks and smiled when we saw Matthew and Amy walk through the door.
Me: Amy! Matt! you're alright! Matt: Yup, Amy figured something was wrong and came looking for us- lucky she ran into me.
Amy: Yeah, you would have been toast. Now, you remember the chip you got in your head? You know, Google in your brain? Me & Aaron: Yeah? We exchanged glances.
Me: You have a chip in your brain? Aaron: You have one in yours? We laughed.
Me: Well that explains everything. We must be-Matt: -running on the same data stream. It explains why Aaron was able to retain memories of his former self, and why he sent a desperate message to you. ... Sorry. I was a little excited to figure it all out. We laughed.
Me: It's okay, Matt... Where's Andrew? I tried to stand, Aaron helped me up.
Matt: What happened to you? Me: I'd honestly rather not talk about it. Amy: Whose Andrew?Me: Long story.Matt: Not really. He's a prince whose full of himself. Amy: Ah. Is he from the winters family? I stole his brother's crown once, he caught me. Then we dated. But he was too clingy. Aaron: Are you serious? Me: You get used to it.
I limped down the stairs.
Me: We need to find him, we have to- Matt: Xura, We can't. If we even tried... Amy: It'd be too late. Me: No! We can't give up! Andrew... He's good. He's important... He matters to me. Amy: We can look for him but he could be long gone by now.Me: He's not. I know he isn't. We can't give up on him.Amy: We can't win every battleI felt a pinch in my neck, a pain run down my spine.
Amy: Xura! The same happened to Matthew and Aaron, and we collapsed to the floor, blacking out.
Amy: Great. Now what am I going to do? ---
???: How did the test go? Daniel: Better than I expected. He grinned.
???: Do you believe she's the one? Daniel: Do I believe she's the one? He laughed.
Daniel: After today, I have never been more certain. Xura Stryker has passed the test. ???: What's your assessment? Daniel: She needs time. She will flourish, in the meantime, I would suggest putting someone in the field. ???: Our plans are nearing their completion, Cobra out. The screen clicks out just as someone bounced into the room.
Daniel: Good work, AddiAddi: Thank you, sir. Daniel: The fanfic was a nice touch. Addi: It gives me a more... Innocent image. He laughed.
Daniel: That it does, that it does...He smiled. Cobra's plans may be creeping closer but he certainly had plans of his own. Plans that involved Xura.
