CHAPTER THIRTEEN
----- Well, turns out Tess loves trees. A lot. And absolutly hates water. Will not swim. At all. Dakota, of course, fixes this problem whenever we have to cross a river, by simply stepping over/ into the river, and holding Tess. Moving around takes my mind off Akino, but sometimes I look up at the stars, and say hello to him and Jay. It's been about a week already, and we still haven't found anywhere that we felt attracted to.
----- Then one day, while Dakota was sitting down, talking to Tess, something super weird happened.
----- He shrunk. Fast. Like almost in less than ten seconds. Which is really fast compared to how big he is compared to the average 12 year old. And then he was just sitting, looking shocked. Looking at his hands. Tess's eyes got wide too. She stood up, and pulled Dakota up with her. She felt his forehead, and patted his arms a couple of times. I walked over, really confused. Now Dakota was just like 5 foot 9. Kinda tall for a 12 year old I guess. "Can you... change back?" I asked, and he shut his eyes, and stayed still.
----- Rare sight right there. Someone get a camera!
----- Then he started growing agian, and Tess leaped backwards in surprise. He was back to... uh... "normal" Dakota size again. 130 feet tall. Tess looked up at him in amazement, and he shut his eyes again, and shrunk back. He smiled. "Cool!"
----- The rest of the time we were walking, he stayed small size, and walked with Tess. She was probably about 5 foot 3. She smiled, and they talked the entire time we were moving. Brad rolled his eyes at me, then looked at them, and I shrugged and smiled.
----- Then we walked past a big city, and we saw a huge park. It was night, so we could sneak Brad in there. There was a little forest, but nothing big enought for Brad to hide in. I was glad Dakota had recently found his new power, because he was just waaaayyyy too tall to go anywhere near a city. The park was really big, and we found a bigger forest that Brad could go into. We found a big enought clearig, and settled down in it. Dakota gazed around. "It's so different down here," he whispered to no one in particular.
----- The next morning, me, Tess, and Dakota all walked in the big city, and Brad and Onico stayed behind, scouting out the park. Since it was day, they had to be extra careful, but I trusted Brad. We all walked along the sidewalk near the street, cars zooming past, whisking out clothes and hair around. We went into the shops, but didn't have any money. Then Dakota stopped infront of a big bakery, and out in the display window were a buch of yummy looking things. Cakes, cookies, scones, muffins, bagels, and so much more. We all put our hands up to the glass, and peered in, wanting to eat everything in there so badly. Then Dakota walked in, and we folowed. As soon as the door opened, a small jngle went off, and a sweet smell of bread wafted up to my nose. I sniffed harder, trying to smell everything. Tess was looking through all the packages of bread, and Dakota was busy drooling over chocochip cookies. I myslef got particuarly attatched to a brownie. Big... doughy... chocolaty... too much to stand! Then the cashier eyed us, and I gathered up my fellow family, and we walked out of the store, feeling heartbroken.
----- When we got back, Brad and Onico were gone, and Dakota was whining. "I feel so whimpy!" he complained, and I shot him the evil eye, gesturing to myself. He blushed. "Sorry, I meant..."
----- "I know," I said sighing.
----- "Can I pleaseeeeee go back to normal???" he said annoyingly.
----- "No!" I barked at him. Then I softened my tone. "A giant will attract attention. In a forest. At a park. In a city. In the day. Towering over almost everything." He whined a bit more, and I gave in, leading the kids out of the park, out of the town, into a nearby forest with a little lake. "Okay." I said, and he didn't wait. He grew to his full height, and scooped me and Tess up. I, was noy used to this, but Tess was. He put me on a tree, and Tess on the tree next to me, and I grabbed on, swaying. I looked down, and gulped. I never did like heights. Yet Tess was climbing down the tree lightning fast, and I figured it couldn't be too hard, so I climbed down one branch. Then another. When I got to the middle of the tree, Tess was pouncing around excitedly, and Dakota had... broken a tree in half. I shrugged. It would be fine... Trees are tough that way.
----- I looked back at Tess, stalking through the grass on all fours. She looked graceful, and dangerous, her pretty face tight in concetration. Then she leaped, and grabbed a butterfly soaring through the air. She batted it around a little, then let it fly away. It looked a little wobbly, then made a nose-dive in the grass. Then it wobbled back up, and landed on a tree. Tess ran over to Dakota, who was using his "shovel" (a.k.a. tree) to dig a hole in the ground. Of course, it was probably ten feet deep, which was nothing to him, but Tess fell down, and dissapeared from veiw. Dakota reached one dirty hand down, and she crawled out, trying to frown, but not working. Then a smile formed on her lips, and she punched Dakota. He rolled his eyes, and she hissed playfully.
----- Then I looked up, and saw the sun was setting. I had fallen asleep in the tree I was in, and surprisingly not fallen out. Dakota was leaning against the same tree I was in, his head reaching over the top of the tree. Tess was snuggled in his jacket pocket, and I smiled. Then I heard a snap, and a bark, and my memories of the wolf pack came back to me. I shivered, and closed my eyes, waiting for the ragged breath of the pack leader to be on the back of my neck.
----- Then Brad stepped through, and Onico. I let out a sigh of relief. I waved at him. He came over, and his head didn't even reach Dakota's shoulder even when Dakota was sitting! I waved down at Brad, because I was just about level with his face, just a little higher. Brad lie on the ground near my side of the tree, and stared up at the stars. I leaned my head back, my muscles aching from whatever. Then I fell asleep, listening to the call of the owls, and the noise of the crickets.
----- When I woke up, Dakota was staring creepily at me right in my face. His big, green and blue eyes sparkling at me, and he was smiling smugly. I stood up, holding on to the trunk. I wasn't very good at the tree-thing yet. He lifted his hand up, and my eyes got wide. He had a bunch of goodies! Just like the ones from the bakery!
----- He put his hands closer, and they were overflowing with goodies! I licked my lips, and he set them all on the ground, and then held out his empty hand for me. I climbed on, feeling safer than in the tree. He set me down, and he went to small size, and we both woke up Brad, Onico, and Tess. Tess purred, and she kept touching her braid, twirling it around her finger. Onico almost attacked the food, but Brad held him back, looking at all the food with a sparkle in his eyes.
----- I swear that whenever Dakota's in his small size, Brad is happier.
----- I mean, the idea of a 12 year old, stronger, bigger, and taller than me, that could pick me up, practictly kill me in a small movement of the hand, doesn't really seem too fun. But we're family! Got to stick together!
----- After I'd eaten two big brownies, a loaf of sour dough bread, and three cokkies, I was stuffed. Tess had had 2 cookies, and a piece of cake, then curled into a tight ball, and dozed off in the warm sun. Onico had eaten probably as much as I weigh in cake, and Dakota stuffed himself on muffins, scones, and doughnuts. Brad pretty much ate everything else, which was a bunch. And it turns out that whatever fill Dakota's small form, fills his large form too, so he doesn't have to eat an entire village to be full.
----- Then all that was left was a glazed doughnut, sitting on the grass. Dakota eyed Brad, and Onico, and then they'd all made a mad grab for it. Dakota had it, then Onico took it out of his hands, and shoved it down his throat, and licked his muzzle, grinning happily.
----- "No fair!" Dakota pouted. Onico pounced onto Dakota, pinning his down with all his sharp nails to the ground. He showed his teeth, and had his snout near Dakota's nose. "Is this fair?" he growled slightly. Then slowly blinked, and all his anger was gone. He got off of Dakota, and looked confused. Dakota was practicly blowing steam out of his ears, and I could tell he was ready to choke Onico, but he held himself back. Onico looked at all of staring, including Tess who had hopped up to protect Dakota.
----- "What?" he asked, itching behind his ears.
----- "What?!" yelled Dakota, now standing up, balling his fists, and taking a threatening step towards Onico. Onico backed away, looking scared.
----- We were all behind Onico, but we all backed away, even Brad.
----- Onico looked at us for help. "What did I do?" he pleaded, backing away from Dakota. Then he was one step away from falling in the lake. Dakota pushed through all of us, and none stopped him. Onico, looked at the lake, and back at Dakota.
----- "What did I do?" pleaded Onico. He really meant it. He wasn't kidding.
----- I raced over to Onico, and put myself infront of him. "Dakota! Stop!" I said, but Dakota pushed me aside, his eyes set on Onico. Even though Onico was bigger than Dakota right now, we all knew what Dakota really looked like.
----- I grabbed Dakota's shoulder, and tried pulling him away from Onico, and he whipped around to face me, all of his anger now towards me. His eyes were pure black, no light reflecting them. He grabbed the neck of my shirt, and lifted my feet off the ground, then set me back down, as if he was showing what he could do. I looked over at Brad, scared out of my wits, but Brad didn't come get me, probably because Dakota was still standing over me. Dakota looked at me, his eyes back to normal. He looked confused, and when he reached down to me, shut my eyes, and turned my face the other way. He looked down at me.
----- "Lane? What are you doing?" he asked, holding his hand out to me. I warily grabbed it,m and he helped me up, looking at me curiously. I backed away, and went near Brad, who stared at Dakota. Onico stepped up to me, walking past Brad. His eyes were black, just like Dakota's were. I backed away. Onico stopped, and looked at me. "Come to me, Lane," said Onico, in a strange, deep voice that wasn't his.
----- I stayed put. Onico sighed. "Come to me, or come to you," and he gave me a sharp toothed smile, his black eyes looking happy. I still didn't move. Onico's eyes went from black, to normal, and he looked dazed and confused, looking around. Then Dakota's head whipped around to me, smirking. And he had black eyes.
----- I tried to get away, but the lake was the only escape, and I... I couldn't swim. Don't laugh!
----- Anyways, I was trapped, and Dakota walked slowly towards me, still smirking. I closed me eyes, wanting to be anywhere else in the world. Nobody moved, not even Brad, or Tess. Then I felt a giant hand grab me around the waist, surprisingly gentle. I opened my eyes, and saw Dakota was holding me, way above the ground. His black eyes looked at me, and I was very confused. Not even Brad could help me now. I pushed on his hand, using all of my strength, but he didn't even notice, he just simply walked away. away from Brad, away from Onico, even away from Tess. Tess hissed, but when he didn't even look back at her, she stopped. Onico barked, and Brad yelled my name, but Dakota didn't stop.
----- I looked back at the fading lights, and hoped Brad would come and save me. But when I looked back up at Dakota's emotionless face, a little bit of my hope dissapeared, and so dis my friends.
