What kinds of things to you look for in an action story?
Any fighting or training situations. I love comparing how different people write the most simple of fights (hand-to-hand) and then can jump into something insane (giant robots, for example~). I like plot twists, too. And main characters that have supporting ones, but the supporters actually have a part and the hero(s) is/are not what people believe is stereotypical.
Do you like writing ABOUT someone, or AS someone more? Why?
I've done both, but from experience I'm more comfortable writing about someone. It gets aggravating with small details in the story, and writing in first person sort of frustrates me. I like describing from afar; even though it's not as intimate a connection with the character as 1st person, it's easier to explain what's happening in the story and give insider hints and whatnot when I'm in third person.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I'm a sucker for non-sappy romances (depending on what I'm reading; if it's novels, I like the story to be focused on the plot, but have some attention to the relationship, but if it's fanfictions you can just go nuts, I won't care). I usually read fantasy, adventure, and sci-fi, but on the off occasion that I find a really good horror book, I'll read it.
What is your favorite to write? Why?
I love writing romance and horror. I feel like I work the best around those two genres, since my writing/role playing years have been filled with both. I love pairing people together and writing something cute and fluffy, or more intimate (like long-distance relationships and the teenage crisis kinds); horror lets me come up with creative ways to kill things and scare people. It's a win/win for both.
I'm also comfortable with fantasy and hurt/comfort; I'm not too great at writing fantasy stories, though (I once wrote one about two of my characters becoming dragons and it was fun, but I feel like I took too much away from actual lore). I love mixing horror and angst together. All of the angst. <33
Do you like writing about animals? Why or why not?
I've role played as a wolf, cat, and dog respectively, and I've written a handful of one-shots about a wolf OC of mine. I don't mind writing as one, and it's pretty fun, but I feel like I'm not really portraying the animal as I should be. I don't understand their limits or their basic instincts as much as I should, so I just stick with humans and hybrids. If the animal is a side character (an OC with a pet), then I have no trouble at all with writing as them. I don't have to put all my attention on the animal itself and wind up dragging on about who-knows-what.
How do you get detail into your stories without boring parts?
I don't think I've had enough lengthy writing experience to answer this, but I'll try. I mostly write one-shots (I've got ideas much longer than a simple 3,000 - 5,000 words, but I haven't written them yet), or I come up with plots that turn into one-shots. I try to start off in two ways: the reader is introduced close to the center of the plot, and as the story progresses, they're brought through the current timeline and past events; or the reader is brought in smack in the beginning of the story with a bit of background history, and then taken through the rest of the plot as the character does. I'll throw in details here and there, but that's how I usually get the notes in. The reader finds out more as time progresses without having to deal with a fat pageful of blah blah blah. c:
