- Trip to the Ocean -

The ocean is my home. It is part of me, of who I am, of my soul. It always has been, since the moment I was born. The sea salt taste I get in my mouth when I leave my tongue hanging out for too long. The smell of the open ocean and the adventures and possibilities that the depths of the great blue have in store for me. The waves that crashed onto land, bringing precious treasures with them which one could never hope to see if they had never been there to witness. It was amazing, truthfully, the ocean, the sea, the water, the great blue. It was the place I had always called home, the place where I returned to when real life became too bizarre.

It was my escape from reality. The only touch of fantasy I could ever hope to capture, to behold, without actually dreaming.

And now I welcomed its cool breeze as my paws met the salty liquid that had traveled thousands and thousands of miles just to be here now. I welcomed the feeling with a sense of ease. “Oh, how I love the ocean.” I said out loud, my eyes, which were completely white with the exception of the black orbs that every wolf and apparently, animal, has at the center of their eyes. My brother, Shiro, always said that when I looked deeply enough into the ocean, fleck’s of its endless blue reflected in my eyes. I always laughed that joke away, knowing it was meant as sarcasm, not compliment.

“Can we go now, Styx? This is getting boring.” My brother, who was as boring and stiff as a log, said. “Oh please, Shiro! Stop being such a stiff. Look! Don’t you just love the ocean?” I asked, once again embracing the bittersweet taste of salt on my mouth and the smell that the ocean gave off that just made you tinkle with the sense of adventure.

“Well, whatever. Mother and Father won’t like it though. We’re supposed to be training. In a few months we’ll have to make the trip to earn our armor, and you’re about as prepared for it as a newborn.” He reminded me, which made me snap back into reality. Right. In a few months we’d have to be prepared to make the spiritually influencing journey where whether or not we got our armor was approved by a stone. That’s the way I described it. Brother would start yapping about how it wasn’t a silly journey to be taken lightly, but one that would influence the rest of our lives. Sadly, I didn’t really care. But he was right, and even if the world of dreams which I loved to embrace was as perfect as I pictured it to be, and my escape from reality, I had to wake up and smell the plain forest air.

“Fine.” I muttered stubbornly, leaving the seashore and following after my brother reluctantly back to the pack territory.
