prompt: Nobody understood why stars slowly began to disappear as the months went on. But each month more starts would vanish, and constellations would become incomplete. Slowly eroding as if each one was going out, rendering them invisible to devices. Unannounced to them, a mythical creature in the form of a canine was slowly eating away at them, absorbing them from the sky to fuel her own life force, illuminating her distinctive spots along her body. She adored the stars, loved to gaze off at them, but she loved her life too.

Eventually, all the stars within her reach would be consumed, and she would erode away into the soil to rejoin the earth, to give back what she took.

"Are you sure I'm ready?"
She tried to keep her voice steady as she spoke, but she couldn't help the slight shaking. Up until now she'd been very calm, and quietly confident; but now that the time was here, a trickle of nerves had seeped into her thoughts. Next to her, Paiea chuckled.

"No one leaves my garden until they're ready," the other sprite said. "I know when they are, and they do too. You do too, Elias. Deep down." Elias gave her a skeptical look from under her eyelashes; only for a second, but Paiea didn't miss it. "Stop doubting yourself," she said firmly. "You get nowhere by doubt, especially when it's unnecessary. Don't let it hinder you."

They walked along side by side, barefoot on the soft grass, winding their way through the pale stone maze. Vines climbed up the rocks, and wildflowers bloomed around them in bundles. She'd gotten so used to the sounds of the birds, the bees, the hum of insects. The warm sun, the light breeze, the clear ponds...all of it had become a sort of home, and yet deep down, she knew she belonged elsewhere. This was Paiea's home, and it had been since almost the beginning of time. She knew that. She was honored, really, to have spent so much time with such an honored nature sprite; second only to Oruzia, who was one of the original Three.

The one who created me.

How strange it felt, knowing she had been made by Oruzia. The first nature sprite. That was an honor, too, even though she hadn't met them yet. Though that was soon about to change.

This was tradition among sprites now. Paiea was a nature sprite first and foremost, yes, but the home she returned to was in this maze; and now, she shared her home with other sprites, too. Sprites of any kind were welcome here, although they usually came with purpose. If they had been struck ill, they came here to heal. And new sprites, after their initial creation, were sent here to wake up; Paiea became their friend, and their guide, and helped them to develop their spritely powers until they were ready to go out into the world. They would be welcomed by which of the Three created them; sprites of Earth, Sea, and Sky. Oruzia was of the Earth, of nature, and would be waiting to meet her.

Beyond the nerves, there was excitement. She was made to do this. The thought gaze her a surge of confidence, and she straightened her shoulders. Paiea smiled.

"That's better," she said quietly. "You have no need for worries, dearest. You are simply moving from one home to the next; and this will be permanent. A special place where you were born to be, forever. Protecting it, watching over it...mortals will praise you. Those who spite you will soon learn their lessons. Your very own niche of the world...isn't that amazing?"

It was. It really was.

They turned into a new part of the maze, bordered on all sides with the stone, apart from an opening in one of the walls. The ground turned to moss and wildflowers as you approached the large stone well in the center of the space. Elias peered over the edge into the infinite stretch of water, and the constantly spiraling lines of fish descending into the deep. Paiea reached out a hand and touched the surface with the tip of her forefinger; ripples spread across the water before all fell still.

The nearest fish suddenly flared with a golden glow, and then the rest followed. One by one, going down and down, the fish became gold and hypnotizing. She stared down into the limitless deep, pushing down the last of her nerves and jutting out her chin. In unison both sprites took each other's hands and squeezed. Then carefully she stepped up onto the edge, taking in a deep breath and letting it out slowly. She closed her eyes.

A step, a jump, and she would spiral down and out into a new life. A whole new world where she would be greeted by Oruzia, a new world where she would meet her creator. Meet her new home. Meet her purpose.

Her eyes opened.

"I'm ready."

the clicks of the horse's hooves rang out across the cobblestone roads. renphis stared out of the windows of the carriage, out at the candles and torches positioned around the square for the humble town's celebration. the festival of the dying sun.

the young princess continued to observe as she was escorted to their destination. how barbaric, she thought to herself, standing before the mob of people with their fire and swords, yelling into the night. renphis gripped the lightpost beside her. it was amazing that some "sacrifice" of a sorcerer could cause such an uproar. there was no "moon goddess", was there? even if there was, why would she desire such living sacrifices?

renphis looked upon the scene with disdain. such a ridiculous thing her father, the king, had dragged her to, simply because he was invited. anything against the sorcerers he liked, didn't he.
