Eliza had always loved baking, but there was nothing that she loved more then her grandmother.
She'd always love the day that she got to spend with her, listening to her stories, playing games, watching TV, But there was one thing that was her all-time favorite, one thing that stayed within her heart,
And that was baking.
Eliza loved the days she got to cook with her grandmother. There was no words to describe the joy she felt when she'd sit at the counter watching her grandmother sort through her recipes of goodies.
But Eliza always loved the time where they would choose a new recipe off the internet and just wing it.
Sometimes it came out, other time it looked like something that came out of the show Nailed It.
But truthfully those were the times Eliza loved most, it was the times where the cookies went south and the treat became this horrible unedible mess that she loved, it was the times that she and her grandmother could just laugh at their failure and never feel bad. And what made these times so cherishable was that her grandmother would always take a picture of the end result whether it was good or bad, it was her way of preserving the memory. So even though there was a book that was filled with fifty pictures of chocolate chip cookies, and thirty pictures of Blueberry muffins, each one was a precious memory. And the way they were able to tell them apart was by because they would write the experience on the back of the picture.
Eliza truly loved those days, and there was so many amazing things that they would make together,
But there was one thing that was Eliza's favorite to make, and that was chocolate rugelach.
Oh, how she loved making this dish with her grandmother! It was one of the most fun things the two ever made together, with its soft insides to its crisp flaky outside it was absolutely delicious.
But its not just the flavor that makes it her favorite it was the memory behind the dish that was so deserving of her love.
It was a day like any other at grandma's, and the two were trying to figure out what to bake.
So after a while the two came across random recipes when chocolate rugelach caught their eye.
They had never made a rugelach before, let alone a chocolate one, so it was intriguing. Plus it sounded like a fun recipe to make, so why not?
And oh it was, it was truly fun to make, but not because of the recipe but because the two had no idea what they were doing, it was a disaster! And the end result was truly laughable. But the two loved the time they spent making it and found that it was one of their most favorites to make just from there failure.
But they both wanted to perfect this dish and not let each one end in mush.
So this dish became an often one that Eliza would make each time she came to see her grandmother.
And the two would bake and bake, and bake, until one day it happened.
They baked a perfect chocolate rugelach that tasted like everything they thought it would.
It was truly a memorable moment that would be cherished through the years.
Now sadly there was a day when Eliza stopped going to grandma's, as there was nothing more then an empty house. The laughter that once filled the walls vanished, and all that was left was a book of the times that were now the past. And though the loss of her grandmother was hard Eliza never stopped baking as it reminded her of everything she loved about those days.
And every year on the day of her grandmother's passing she'd pack a small lunch and enjoy a small picnic over her grandmother's grave where she'd just enjoy the sun and the life that surrounded her. And just before leaving Eliza would always leave a small plate of perfectly baked chocolate rugelach as a way to thank her grandmother for every memory they shared.
