Akön had no control over his second pair of ears from a young age. His main pair still worked perfectly, however, due to their positioning he always had a kind of 'blind spot' where he couldnt quite hear directly behind him or to the sides. He was embarrassed at first, always asking others to repeat themselves or even went so far as to wrap his second pair with a bandana in an effort to hide them to no avail. His only splice and form of peace was his increasingly common treks into the deep woods where nature played him her sweet lullaby away from judging eyes.
One day, when the young Rohk was at the very cusp of adulthood, something miraculous happened. It started with a small soft humming when he awoke, but was simply shrugged off as a side effect to a long night. As the day progressed, the humming slowly morphed into an incessant ringing which only grew louder as the sun set and the moon began to rise. He shook his head and rubbed his ears, trying desperately for silence to return until he finally staggered forward and fell unconscious.
When he awoke in the dead of night the ringing had stopped, but in its place sat the familiar sound of crickets and tree frogs but somehow crisper and clearer, almost as if a conversation was being held in a hushed whisper. He managed to stand and slumped against the wall of his den with a groan, "W-What happened"? A small voice, unexpected yet soothing answered him in a shrill tone, "You passed out, young one. Fear not for we had watch over you". Akon spun to the sound of the voice only to find nothing but the empty night air. His ears twitched as he tried to pinpoint the owner until a small chirp caught his attention and he looked up to see a colony of bats hanging from the trees above his lair.
The voice came again, "We would not let you see harm, young one. We let you rest until you stirred and only now do we see that your gift has been awoke as well". Akon cocked his head in confusion, "I mustve hit my head when I fell. This can't be happening". One small silvery bat stretched her wings and silently glid down to sit before the rohk, "This is no mistake child. The forest has gifted you with the power of hearing. Only once in a generation does this ability become evident and with your eloquent ears, she made no mistake".
The small creature crawled forward and up Akons arm until she sat just on his mane, "You can hear us because she wills it. You now have her abilities, you can hear all of her children as you hear your very own kin. Speak to any of the dwellers of these woods and listen, for they will answer".
