Gentle, and easy. I would simply sit across from her, when she seems to be calm, and let her come to me as I talk and sing gently. I believe she loves music, so I would hope that being easy and gentle would open her up.

How do you get her to open up?: Val likes baked goods, and not just for making and eating them... but also the history and culture behind them. She may be shy and timid now, but put a plate of cookies in front of her and she'll start devouring them while going on about all the different types of cookies from various places. Don't even get her started on cakes and pies! Her favorite is baklava, once you set some out even just barely in her line of sight she will inhale them before you can say her name in astonishment, and then apologize by telling you all about how they're made, where they originated, etc. She's a dessert queen!
