"do you ever think he'll speak?"

"oh of course he will- he's just a late bloomer."

"he's nearly old enough to start training. he hasn't spoken a word since he opened his eyes!"

"w-well he can communicate still."

blisset flattened his ears against his head and looked down at his paws. why did his parents have to argue? more specifically, why did they have to argue about him? why couldn't his father understand that all his life, he tried to make some sort of noise, but nothing came out?

his siblings didn't seem to care. in fact, they had their own way of communicating, with special ear flicks, blinks, tail twitches, and other gestures. but the rest of the pride seemed to not notice his attempts to fit in.

"no son of mine is a late bloomer, how can he be a successful fighter if he doesn't have a mighty roar?"

"maybe he isn't meant to be a fighter, maybe the sky tribe intended for him to be a skilled hunter!"

"oh nonsense, we're a family of strong fighters!"

They walk through the woods,
Snow falling around them slowly.
But as they turn a corner,
They're motives remain unholy.
Flakes are scattered throughout their pelt,
But soon they, and their morals,
Will surely melt.
They glance up, at the branches,
And wish with all their heart,
That they didn't have to be the one,
To make their pride fall apart.
They try to tell themselves it's fine,
That they had no choice,
But deep down they knew,
It was because of their voice.
The voice, which drove them insane, day in, day out,
The voice, which has grown from a whisper, to a shout.
And as they wander the woods,
Pelt frosted with snow,
They came upon another pride,
Who shall soon be filled with sorrow.

He was laid next to me, awake as I sleep.
For a death had taken him, so even in my dream I weep.
A dream from which one day I will wake to see him by my side
And I will know for sure he had always been right there and never “died”
So for now, be strong and look for wonderful things
For the quiet nights and warmth that sunshine brings
Even still I’ll cry, miss him, my soul will ache
But he will be right here, waiting until you wake

Hailstone squinted her eyes shut as snow whirled into her face. She forced her way through the thick snowdrifts, shoving her paws into the snow.

She had been out hunting when the blizzard had suddenly struck. Leaving her catch behind, Hailstone had struggled to make it back to her pride's camp. Of course, the only day when she wasn't prepared for a blizzard, one happened to strike. Her pride lived in the northern mountains, where prey was hard to catch and the weather harder to withstand.

Hailstone, seeing the dark shape of a cave ahead, pushed forward. Just a few more pawsteps, and she would be out of the storm.

The ground beneath her paws changed from snow to stone, and Hailstone sank down onto the rock, breathing a sigh of relief.

Her father, Granite, came over. "I'm so glad you're safe," he said, nuzzling Hailstone. "When the storm struck and you were stuck out there, I thought you surely wouldn't survive a blizzard of this scale."

"Well, I'm fine now," Hailstone said, nuzzling her father back. "But I had to leave my catch behind. I couldn't make it through the snow while lugging an eagle around."

She turned to stare out into the whirling snow. Hailstone had been born and raised here in the mountains, but was she meant to stay here? She didn't believe that lions were truly meant to live in a world of ice and snow. She longed for the open savannah, where she could run without worrying about crevasses or avalanches. She longed for abundant prey, for nights where she wouldn't go to bed hungry.

"I... I don't want to stay here any longer," she admitted. Hailstone hung her head; she knew her father was fond of her.

Granite blinked slowly. "I figured," he said after a moment of silence.

Flurry jerked her head up, shocked. "You did?"

"I knew you weren't a mountain lion since the moment you were born. You always were a better hunter in the open meadows; and when you saw sunshine, your face lit up like it never had before." Granite touched his tail tip to Flurry's shoulder. "I wouldn't have you stay here if you're not happy."

Hailstone stared at Granite. "But aren't I more important here? Don't you want me to stay?"

"Of course I want you to, but you and I both know that's not what your heart wants." Granite touched noses with his daughter. "I don't want you to feel tethered here just because I live in the mountains. You deserve the right to set your home where you want to."

Hailstone's heart swelled. She was going to live in the savannah, where the sun shone every day and where lions never went hungry. "Oh, thank you, Father!" she said, nuzzling him. "You don't know how much this means to me."

Granite's eyes shone with love. "No matter where you live, I still love you."

"I love you too." 493 words
