Was there anyone to say goodbye to? What a question. Of course there was anybody to say goodbye to. There was absolutely everyone to say goodbye to!

No, she thought firmly to herself. No goodbyes. Only see you laters. Because of course she'd be back. How could she not come back to this beautiful place, full of wonderful memories and lovely people?

The beach cleaners, Captain and Egg. The casino brothers, Spider and Rook. Mako, who tried to teach her to surf. Aukai, who helped her learn to snorkel. Her whale watching buddy, Monty, with his thick glasses and passion for books. Timothy, the gorgeous kit down by the tide pools. She wouldn't forget that smile in a hurry. How much would he have grown, she wondered, when she saw him next? And Carter, dear Carter...how she loved him as a friend. She couldn't wait to see his friendly face when she returned. Or perhaps he could begin his adventures, and come and visit her. Now that would be nice.

She spent the day visiting each of her newfound friends, spending time with them and sharing fond moments. Moving around between them all was good; it kept her moving, kept her focus away from the fact that she might not see them for awhile. Some of them kept a strong composure, while some returned her emotional words and tight hugs.

And to think, she wouldn't have met any of them if it hadn't of been for the boat breaking down.

At the end of the day, as the sun was going down and setting the sky ablaze with rich oranges and golds, she wandered back down to the dock to find the man who had sent her on this mission. He looked up from tinkering as she approached, and stood up fully to greet her.

"Hey, kid. Did you-oof!"

His words were cut off as she rushed at him, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. He seemed frozen for a moment, before awkwardly patting her on the back. "Um-"

"Thanks for fixing the boat," she choked out, baby tears forming in the corners of her eyes. "Thanks for keeping me busy, and for letting me help. Thanks for being so welcoming to me. All of you were. I know you can be a bit of a grump-"

"Hey!"

"-but I really appreciate you letting me come down here, and letting me be your friend. That's what we are now, whether you like it or not."

He let out an awkward chuckle, although eventually his arms moved to return the hug. "Uh, thanks kid, I think. Not really a hugger, but uh…this is nice. I guess."

"You'll have to get used to it with Monty," she murmured quietly.

"Huh?"

"Nothing," she replied innocently, pulling away and wiping at her eyes. He regarded her with the same stoic expression as always, but she thought the corners of his mouth might be twitching up in a smile. "You gonna come back and visit us, then?" he asked.

"Oh yeah," she said, nodding her head firmly. "This isn't goodbye. Just a see you later." A proper smile flickered across his face, and she returned one twice as big. "I'll be back. You can count on it."

there is no surprise on carter's face when eden comes to leave his well wishes with him, likely because he'd others tell him a similar story already. carter smiles when eden tells him the news and it feels like plastic in his mouth. he doesn't want to let go, of carter, the island, the good and fond times. but carter's letting go too, isn't he? of the fears of leaving everything he's ever known, to follow his dreams, probably after the shipwrecked leave; eden knows it will be good for him, to him, but it's also hard to imagine a future kalokairi without carter's strong, anchoring soul and rock-smashing asmr in the background. maybe it's because of that he gets the urge to hug the guy, gathering it up before it can fall to his habitual submissiveness. "i'll miss you," eden remembers saying, "but i know you'll do well in whatever you choose."
eden also drops by egg and captain's area to give his farewells. captain claps him on the shoulder and holds on for a minute. she looks a little tired, but more bittersweet when she steadies her gaze with his. she tells him to not make any messes when he goes back on the ship and at home, and eden shoots back, "the same to you. watch yourself when you're cleaning in the sand, cap."
he makes it to timothy's tide pools as well, finding the latter exploring them in a last-hurrah kind of fashion. seeing the younger boy so engrossed in his personal ocean, eden leaves him be and saves the goodbye on his tongue for a later time.
since he didn't get to meet the rest of the colorful cast of the island (though eden did visit that mermaid cove briefly and marveled at them and introduced and dismissed himself just as quickly, so that he wouldn't be tempted to say anything that threatened his cool facade), eden makes it back to shark a little before sunset. he slows his steps as he recognizes that shark is not alone, talking to the professor. perhaps? they're finally going somewhere? if he didn't know shark better, eden would read the flush on shark's face as vague anger─ oh. he wouldn't have ever known these expressions if he never went onto the island, would he? peel the layers off of shark (albeit, it ended in minimal result) like a shrek. or known these kind, kind islanders, gotten these sweet, sweet memories.
monty's leaving now, looking as sheepish as his conversation partner. eden nods at him, a simple, temporary farewell. eden will miss that too, the hawaiian shirts the professor wore ─ it's not like they won't ever see each other again once the cruise ship finally makes headway, it's just that, there won't be an excuse to give the nerd more than a hello, then a goodbye.
and how's he going to say bye to shark? write HAGS on his arm and hope he doesn't wash it off immediately if eden even gets to finish writing it? honestly, eden shouldn't have gotten so attached to the old man if he was going to end up with these frayed and awkward emotions.
"eden." shark sees him before eden can walk the rest of the way.
"sharkie." eden half-smiles as he returns the acknowledgement, surrendering his hands to his pants pockets, ignoring the small want to copy shark's folded arms. eden mentally fumbles for words in a rare display of hesitance while approaching shark, but the man in question surprises him with his comment.
"beautiful sunset today."
eden can't tell if that was just meant to fill the space in the conversation or something actually profound to shark, but settles somewhere in between. the usual had been quipped small talk, then a favor or two, then a 'yeah, yeah, alright, sharkie. leave it to the competent me. don't forget you owe me three more thank you's now, by the way!' it just occurs to eden that maybe, shark didn't know how to say goodbye either.
"yeah, isn't it?" eden finds himself saying, taking a place on shark's right side.
five minutes later, the sun clips into the water while two silhouettes linger before it.

Gosh, it had gone by too quickly.

Iris wandered around the boardwalk, gazing into the windows to see if anything caught her eye last minute. She waved her goodbyes to shop owners she had made friends with, wishing them the best and holding short conversations as she visited each one.

She stopped by the casino, where she said goodbye to the strange, six-eyed kalon who worked it, and they thankfully forgave her for giving them such a hard time about the keys. Her feet took her to the tidepools where she viewed the little critters with Timothy one last time, then to the surfing hut where she had made a friend out of the commonality of not knowing how to surf in the first place.

But, there was one more friend that she had to say goodbye to - the one she had been waiting for last.

As the sun started to set, Iris made her way back to the shore, taking in how soft the sand felt under her paws. She walked down to the pier, on the very edge, placing her arms on the wooden railing as she gazed out into the sea. It seems she would miss the ocean more than anything, or anyone, for that matter.

"Goodbye, good friend. You've made a lot of memories for me here, I hope we can meet again in the future."

[ ❧ ] goodbyes were never really your thing. it wasnt that you didnt say goodbye to people, you just didnt like that you had to. they were always so sad, and inevitably, you'd start crying. this time would be extra sad, you think, because you've gotten to know all these kalons for over a week, and you feel like you've made so many friends in doing so. it all feels too soon, like you didnt have enough time... you wish you hadnt spent so long goofing off by yourself, maybe you wouldnt feel so distressed and saddened about the fact you're leaving. there's a million could've, should've, would've's in your head, and another million more ways you think you could've spent your time better, but in the end, there are no takebacks, no rewinds, and soon all of you will be leaving.

well, that's depressing. and also pretty out of character for you. you're not one to think so negatively like this.

you take a deep breath, and relax ypur shoulders... feel the tension and anxiety fade away into a sort of solemn acceptance and an appreciation for all the kalons you met and memories you made while staying on kalokairi's island. you stretch your arms, and then march right back to shark, who looks surprised to see you again.

"no one you wanna say goodbye to, hm?-" he pauses, when you hug him. there's no tearful goodbye or mumbled speech about how you'll come back to see everyone some day, it's just a quick, tight hug. and then you let go. you offer him a hand to shake, and he takes it, with a smile on his face (it looks quite goofy on him) that you feel is quite a rare occurance, and says, "pleasure meeting you all. hopefully you troublemakers come back some day, but next time make sure you dont terrorize the locals, got it?" he says with a playful tone, and you nod. "now get on, will you? i've still got work to do, and you've got folks to say goodbye to." you nod again, because you suppose he's right, and start to walk away from shark, towards the busy part of the island, where most of everyone else would likely be.

as you stroll down the beach, you feel far older than when you had come here, or maybe that's the disney channel slice of life coming of age story sitcom part of your brain saying that, and playing goofy 2010's music in the background as you walk off into the sunset, and the credits begin to roll shortly after. (except you arent, you're actaully walking away from the sun.) there's a lot you could say, a lot you want to say, but you dont think words can quite do the end before the end of your journey on the island. maybe if you were poetic, or creative, or just in general anyone else, you would know what to say... instead you're left just feeling kind of empty, kind of numb, unfeeling almost now to the fact you'll be departing soon.

you hope the others like hugs, because you've got a lot of them. and shells. so many shells. and some real bad sunburns, but you dont think anyone would want that, so you'll keep that one you think.

maybe you can bring your family here, some day. maybe the kalokairi island locals will even come to you, some day, or send you post cards. maybe you'll give everyone your address, so they can send you stuff, and maybe you can send the kalons back here some stuff too.

as you approach carter's workshop, you're about to say hi when you suddenly pause in thought, and scrunch up your eyebrows with a frown.

...does anyone here even actually like crabs?
