How does your Kalon beat the heat?

This was turning into less of a holiday, more of an episode of Taskmaster. She supposed partially it was her own fault for going to visit Shark every few days, but was it so wrong to think they could just hang out? Sit around, chat, and so on? He was the mechanic, yes, but she was just a stranded cruise goer.

It did mean the ship would be finished sooner…though she wasn't sure how she felt about that. She did quite like it her, even if she spent a lot of time running around doing other people's errands. Plus, at least this one involved the professor, and he was quite fun to talk to about books and such. She gathered the supplies she needed, and made her way to the clifftop.

His nose was buried in a book, and he didn't seem to notice as she approached. "Afternoon, Monty!" she called, and he jumped slightly. Pushing his glasses back up his nose, he waved in greeting. "Afternoon, Annie. What brings you here?"

"Business deal," she replied, taking a seat beside him. "Put forward by Shark." She noticed a pink tint appear on his face, but pretended not to notice. "He needs that little fan of yours," she continued, pointing to the device in question. "Not entirely sure why, but he asked me to come and haggle for it. I know it's been really hot lately, but I've got some things that you might be interested in."

He nodded slowly, his expression slightly unsure. "Okay then. Let's see what you've got."

"First," she said, pulling something out of her bag, "is another little hand held fan. Not the kind Shark wants, but one that could be used to replace yours. I also-" she opened the cooler box she'd brought with her, 'have some things to sweeten the deal." He leaned over, watching to see what would come out next.

"Some fruit popsicles."
"Good choice."
"Ice cubes, for eating."
"Ah, ingenious."
"A cooling gel mat - you can dab it on your face, or put it on your neck, or whatever."
"Smart invention."
"And finally, something I think you'll be very keen on; Shark's gratitude."

There was a definite blush now as he stumbled over a reply. "Why would I - I mean, why would that - um -"

She gave him a pat on the back. "It's alright Monty, no need to justify yourself for me. Just use that gratitide wisely, yeah? Maybe he'd even take you out to dinner, to make up for this inconvenience."

Cheeks flushed, he didn't respond; instead he handed her the fan, and stubbornly shoved a popsicle in his mouth to keep from talking. Chuckling quietly to herself, she slipped the fan into her bag and opened a sweet treat for herself to join him.

“Hey Professor!” Oxford greeted the whale-watching enthusiast.

The book in the Professor’s hands went flying as he was startled by Oxford’s voice after having been deeply engrossed in the tale. Oxford, used to this by now, caught the book that fell out of his hands and handed it back to him. The Professor pushed his glasses up his nose sheepishly and nodded his thanks, before clearing his throat and resettling himself in his shaded seat on the cliffs.

“Are you here for some more whale watching?” he inquired while he found his page again and folded over the corner so he could remember his place.

“Not this time, actually. Shark sent me to collect your fan?”

“Ah, yes!” the Professor cried, checking his pockets as if he’d lost his wallet and then fumbled around his surroundings as he looked for the fan he had evidently misplaced. Eventually, he pulled out a slightly crushed fan from the back of the seat.

“Here you go!” he said cheerily, handing it over, but Oxford could sense a hint of reluctance in the way his smile lost its sincerity after a couple of seconds. It was pretty obvious that Shark and Monty were coming to terms with how they they felt for each other as the realisation began to sink in that they’d be separated soon, yet both were completely oblivious to the other’s feelings. Boy how Oxford could relate to missing the obvious like that for years before he and Desmond realised.

Oxford suddenly felt the heat and began to fan himself as he asked the Professor: “How will you keep cool now?”

“I’ll be absolutely fine, got my trusty umbrella here to keep the sun off me. You, on the other hand, will have to find an alternative method of staying cool once you hand that fan over. In fact, you could always go for a bit of a dip in the sea?” the Professor reasoned.

“Oh! You know what Professor, that’s a fantastic idea!”

Cesar rolled his eyes as hard as humanly possible at Shark and grumbled a bit as he stormed off annoyed. He could care less what the mechanic thought of the professor. He had better things to do and at this rate he was getting antsy about getting home. Cesar had no cell service so he had no clue if he even had a mafia anymore back in America. It made Cesar on edge and nervous. If he could help out Shark however he can to help speed up the ship repairing process, then he was very willing to do it at this rate. Cesar immediately went and found Professor Richards and simply asked for the mini propeller. Like Shark had said though, he wasn’t willing to give it up unless there was another way to keep him cool. He liked his fan a lot and Cesar couldn’t blame him. His Italian skin had gone from being white to a decent tan by being out in this heat all day long every day. He was used to this kind of heat from his time in Italy as a child. Cesar finally found someone with a larger fan though and bribed them to go to the beach for a few days and to cool off in the ocean. He bought the best fan that any of the residents had and gave it to Professor Richards in exchange for the mini propeller.

"It's potentially the best way to cool down." Eleanor called to Monty from where she floated on her back. He seemed nervous about the idea, but Eleanor peered at him over her shades and waved him toward her and the water. "Grab a donut and paddle out." She leaned her head back against the inflatable ring that she was relaxed in. The water was cold and refreshing on her back, feet, and tail, while the sun warmed her face, shoulders, and legs. Her inflatable ring was a sprinkle donut-pattern, which was a hit with the kits. She caught a couple kits pointing it out to their friends.

The ocean jostled Eleanor as she relaxed, but it was all part of the fun. Thanks to a section of the beach being roped off for swimming, there was no risk of being pulled out to sea. Near the edge of the roped off section in the sand, Monty was pondering which float to choose. He eventually chose a pretty standard orange slice-looking float ring and wandered over to stand across from Eleanor on the sand again, but he still didn't do more than let the waves lap at his ankles. Eleanor looked at him before she sighed and shifted onto her stomach, the ocean water sending a chill over her as it splashed her. She paddled back towards shore, still lounging in her ring even when the bottom of it hit the sand. She smiled up at Monty.

"It's totally safe, I promise." She assured him, gesturing out to the floating tubes that sectioned off the swimming area.

"Well, I- I know that, but..." Monty looked at his orange ring. "I just don't know how I feel about the water where... where, uh..."

"Where you can't touch the sand?"

Monty blushed. "Yes. I can swim, b-but-!"

Eleanor stopped him, putting a hand on his foot and smiling. "You don't have to explain yourself to me, it's okay! You can go as far out as you're comfortable with, and if you start drifting too far and can't paddle yourself back, just give me a splash and I'll help you, okay?" She said. Monty thought the idea through and then nodded, clearly determined. "Great. Here." Eleanor stood in the center of her ring and put Monty's in the water. "You're not too much taller than me, so you go ahead and sit in the center here, nice, just like that, and I'll push you out as far as you want! You can measure the water on me."

Eleanor walked Monty out into the water in his ring, her own donut rising around her waist as she went. At about ribcage level, Monty motioned to stop. Eleanor let go of his float and shifted to sit back in the center of hers again, grinning at him. He smiled shyly. "Nice, isn't it?" She asked him. Monty nodded.

"It's not the worst."

Find a way to keep cool? That's easy. Any old fool can do it - all they need is some cardboard!
Antheia insists that it's easy as pie to poor Monty who looks quite reluctant to give up his little fan. Gods only know where she gets the cardboard from but she has dozens of sheets and she's not about to let her fellow whale-watcher escape until he's given up his fan and given her fans a try.
Just fold them, she insists, struggling to get the pattern right. Just fold it lots, over and over, and then you have it! A perfect cardboard fan.
Now maybe it's not fancy, or electric, or 100% efficient. But trust me, she insists, when you have no fan and you're roasting hot, any little bit of relief will do. She ignores Monty's protests about the fact he has a fan, she's just trying to steal it.
Cardboard is easy to find, she continues without listening. Just pop into any old shop and they'll have some. Free or to buy, and maybe you'll find nice colours! Some flower-patterned cardboard from a tissue box container! All you need to do is grab it, flatten it, and spend the next three minutes of your life folding it up for a perfect summertime fan. Easy, she promises, waving her surprisingly efficient fan at him while she flaps a second one at herself. Clearly, she's had to practise to get them to work this well. Oh well- if they keep you cool, Monty says reluctantly, handing over his nice fan and taking her cardboard one. And it's probably better for the environment...
