Tris had grown accustomed to Shark's odd tasks now, she'd thought about refusing to help but her desire to leave combined with the allure of mermaid scales meant that she'd helped Shark every time he'd asked.

She felt pretty uncomfortable taking Monty's fan, the island is hot. Tris wished she'd been smart enough to bring a fan for herself. Instead she'd been having to flap week old newspapers at her face to keep cool. Somehow, the ship's bar was miraculously still stocked with ice and cold drinks. Cold drinks and newspapers were all Tris had to help her cope with the heat, and she was tired of it.

Tris decided to do something about the heat. Shark wasn't the only one who could fix things. The bar still had electricity, so Tris was sure she could get the air con up and running again, at least in the bar. If Monty could sit in a nice air conditioned room with a cold drink he might be much more inclined to give Shark his fan.

Monty relaxed into a big armchair in the bar.
"Ooh this is nice." The flow of air from the newly repaired air con machine gently blew across his face, much better than a fan. Tris brought Monty another drink and took the now-forgotten hand fan back to Shark. (222 words)

How does your kalon beat the heat?

Coming to the island was a wonderful opportunity to relax, but it was also unbearably warm. Well, not so much warm as outright hot. The heat, of course, wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. This island humidity was unlike anything Cherry had ever seen. Unfortunately, humidity was much harder to overcome that the normal heat. As Cherry approached the professor he took a deep breath and prepared to bluff his way through this entire conversation.
“Hello, Professor!” He waved at the professor as he approached, and the professor simply nodded and continued to fan himself. “How are you doing today?”
“Fine, thank you. And yourself?”
“Great! I was just going to ask if I could have that fan of yours? Shark needs it to repair some things.”
“Shark needs my... my fan?” the professor stammered. Was he sweating even more at the mention of Shark, or was that just Cherry’s imagination? Regardless, Cherry continued.
“Yes. And I know it’s still incredibly hot out, but I have a solution.” Reaching into his satchel, he pulled out a small folding fan. “Now, I know what you’re thinking. This is just like your current fan but less efficient because it’s not powered by anything. But that’s where your wrong. It’s fashionable,” Cherry unfolded the fan and waved it a few times, “and not to mention environmentally friendly. Help protect those whales you so dearly enjoy watching. Plus, I’m sure Shark would be so very grateful for all your help. So,” Cherry held a hand out to the professor, “what do you say?”
