prompt 10: What is their favorite island treat and why?

11pm. about that time when, if you had dinner at seven, you’re just about starting
to get hungry again.

ruka puts their feet up, leans into the chair in their room. they ache all over, their
twig of a body having moved more in the last few weeks than it was rightfully able
to. they’re comfy. they’re warm. they’re even feeling sorta sleepy, despite their
usual bed time being something like four in the morning.

their stomach growls. loudly. like, if the whale watching guy was around, he’d look
outside to see what was making that noise. truth be told, ruka didn’t have dinner at
seven. they didn’t have dinner at all. they groan, stand up with a wobble to their
step, kick their sandals on. grab a light hoodie.

“atashi,” they start, and their own voice almost startles them in their tired state,
“i’m going out for some food. wanna come?”

oh, atashi, sharing a room with ruka. because even if ruka’s cousin could afford half
the rooms on the ship, he couldn’t magically free one up, so it was hey! you can
share a room with ruka when we find them! not that ruka had agreed to this,
because they didn’t even know anyone else was coming, but. atashi was a nice
roommate to have.

“you’re leaving the ship?” atashi gathers this from the hoodie.

“yea, i want something from a place on the island.”

“i’ll come,” atashi answers, and slips on a pair of flipflops— no jacket, because they
were hardly ever cold. or hot. or in general uncomfortable at all, at least visibly.

but it’s definitely cold out, regardless of whether atashi thought so. the sea breeze
in the sun was poseidon’s blessing upon the beach, and the sea breeze at night his
curse. ruka is freezing. they could have changed into pants, but man. the effort that
would have taken. obviously wearing shorts and having icicles for legs was the better
option.

the island restaurant they arrive at is small, more of a stand than anything. noticeable
though for still being open at this time at night, whereas many had closed hours ago.
atashi sits down as ruka orders, and when they too sit down they have a tray piled
with fries and—

“chicken nuggets?”

“gotta have nuggies, my good pal,” ruka speaks through a mouth already stuffed with
food. “this place is basically island mcdonalds.” they push the tray towards atashi in a
quiet offer. atashi makes do with the fries.

all the food available to them. shrimp, crab, grilled vegetables, pasta, basically any
number of fancy dishes even being limited in which places were actually open. and ruka
gets. island mcdonalds. but it makes sense, really. they’re a fast food kind of person.
fast, loaded with sodium, the works.

“that, and,
i’m super broke.”

Prompt 10: What is their favorite island treat and why?

Alania glanced around the shops, tempted to try new things but also afraid she would dislike it and upset the islanders. Not that they would be angry at seeing her dislike a type of food, but she was still worried. Maybe she could try some sort of fruit instead? She ate a lot of fruits back home, surely the fruits here would be similar, or at least familiar enough. She would try the more adventurous meals and snacks later when she had mustered up the courage to do so.

Spying a stand selling some local fruits, she wandered over, waving cheerfully at the stall owner and looking at the goods they had available. "What's this?" She asked, pointing at a brown, fuzzy ball that, if she wasn't paying attention, she would have believed it was fur. There were three little indents on one side.
"A coconut!" Came the reply, and she looked at him, her blank expression prompting him to continue. "Ah, one of the tourists? I can't believe you've never heard of a coconut, but its a fruit that has a refreshing drink in it, plus some tasty 'flesh' inside, for want of a better word. Here, I'll let you try one."
He expertly trimmed the edges and sliced off one side, before giving the coconut to her, with a straw. She sipped cautiously, before grinning.
"I'll have some more if you don't mind."

What is their favorite island treat and why?

Initially when Radford had been on the cruise he had kept to what he considered 'safe' foods. For breakfast he had consumed two pieces of toast with butter, for lunch and dinner he either grabbed a steak and chips (minus the salad of course) or a hotdog or a burger. He never bothered with dessert. He drank only soda. He only went to the one restaurant on the ship though there were many to choose from. Safe. Boring. Yet better than the diet he survived on back at home which consisted of a cup of coffee in the morning, nothing for lunch and two minute noodles for dinner.

Yet only the other day he had wandered around the island and enjoyed a shopping experience. Back home he didn't have two cents to his name. While he had been stranded on Kalokairi he had somehow managed to accumulate a fairly hefty amount of the local currency and suddenly he had options. So it was with a slight sense of trepidation, but also a growing curiosity that he one day decided to walk off the boat and find some local cuisine.

He followed his nose. Sure there were a number of bigger eateries set up near the dock in an attempt to trap any tourists before they explored any further but these he ignored. He started walking towards another part of the island, where the locals ate. He had observed the street food stalls from afar during his various meanderings but had not been brave enough to approach. Now he stood at the start of the market, hesitating. The locals greeted him warmly and invited him over to their stalls to sample their wares. To someone who had never gone beyond the familiar, the tastes on his tongue were a revelation.

The crunch of green papaya salad, the creamy-sour coconut soup slipping down his throat, the sharp heat of red curry, the slippery consistency of rice noodles, the soft and brittle flakiness of curry puffs, the sweet and spicy fish falling apart on his tongue. Sweet. Spicy. Sour. Salty. He tried them all. He loved them all. He blinked back tears from the realisation that he had been living a bland life. That he had denied himself this simple pleasure. Food was necessary, yes, but it could also be nourishment.

Eventually he purchased his chosen meal and sat down at one of the rickety tables available at the market, feet digging into the sand as he spread his mini banquet around him. Curry puffs to start, stir fried glass noodles with vegetables to follow, mango with sticky rice as a dessert all washed down with sugarcane and lime juice. Yes, these were all his current favourites but judging by the amount of delicious treats on offer this was likely to change on a day to day basis.

As with any good trip, the Kruise had been filled with plans to rest, shop, and play. But maybe, most importantly, there had been plans to eat. So when he finally found the time to wander the island and grab some food, Cherry knew exactly where he was headed. After this whole shipwreck ordeal, there was nothing he wanted more than a nice, frosty pineapple float. Something about those had always just seemed like the perfect island snack. Nice and cold, to fight off that baking heat. Fruity, which is always nice for a vacation. Overall, it's a treat you can't find just anywhere. And even if you do manage to get your hands on one outside of a tropical paradise like this, it just isn't the same. Here, the fruit is fresher, ice cream feels colder, and the surroundings are beyond compare.
But, as Cherry sat on the beach and enjoyed his snack, he realized maybe the food itself had nothing to do with why he enjoyed it so much. He watched the young kalons run along the beach, but instead of those kits he saw his own kids. He thought back to all the trips he'd taken them on, all the memories they had shared. As he took the last bite of ice cream and lay back into the sand, he realized he didn't necessarily love the pineapple floats, as good as they may be. What he loved was the memories they carried with them.
