Prompt #6

Cesar didn’t like the idea of having to go scuba diving simply for a tool that would repair the ship. He was aware that a lot of equipment was involved with scuba diving- expensive equipment at that. He didn’t want to end up damaging any of it and he also knew that it could be life-threatening if he didn’t take lessons and had no clue what he was doing with the gear underwater. Cesar wanted to help Shark find the tool though for bragging rights so he did what he did best.

He paid someone to take him out while he snorkeled and watched them get the tool for him.

Cesar would tell people this but what actually happened was the Cesar explained to a local of the island about his concerns and how urgent it was to get the tool. He wanted to contribute somehow though and help out so he willingly offered to native to go snorkeling and see if he could spot the tool somehow from the surface of the ocean. At first he was intimidated by all of the creatures that swam around him in the vast sea, but after awhile he ended up actually enjoying it and got a good beach tan to show off. The native ended up finding it but it helped Cesar feel better about himself by trying to help anyway.

[ ] you've been diving for a couple days now, and you're pretty confident for someone who's never done this before until this kruise, but you werent really sure what to do when shark asked you to find his missing tool. of course you'd help, but... you didnt realize the task it would truly be.

you spend several hours in the water, it feels like, and all you manage to pull up are unhappy clams and a few crabs who just wanted to say hi. as sunset draws nearer and daylight begins to dwindle, you start to feel hopeless in ever finding shark's tool. that is, until you feel a slight nudge against the boat. you look down towards the water curiously, and you see...

several dumbo octopi with a shiny tool that looks vaguely familiar among them! you get back into the water carefully, making sure not to upset or scare the octopi, and gently taking the tool with an appreciative nod. the octopi quickly disappear immediately after you do that, they must be very shy... and you call out to kalon snoozing aboard to head for shark's.

you bounce the tool in your palm a couple times, on the way back to the shore... it takes you almost dropping it right back into the water once before you elect to just hold it normally.

How do they find it, and what's the experience like?

The warm ocean waters and the smell of salt overpower the man's senses as he stands atop a rock overlooking the sea. He has snorkeling gear equipped, and he's wearing the proper outfit, but the massive expanse of blue before him is a bit intimidating.

"You're sure you don't have another tool that could work?"

"I don't think Shark has one, no. Sorry mate."

He sighs, taking one last look at the ocean before he pulls his diving gear over his face and prepares for the plunge.

      Three. Two. One. Jump!

His eyes are squeezed shut as he leaps from the rock, and as he dives into the water, the sudden coldness of it makes a chill run up his spine. He swims down, eyes still closed, exhaling sharply as he tries to gain the courage to take a look.

When he finally does, what he sees is breathtaking.

A massive teal blue pool lays before him, filled with brightly colored sea life huddled on the sand and rock. The coral is especially bright, the pinks and grays working together in perfect harmony to make a beautiful display. Tiny crabs crawl across the bottom floor, and fish swim to and fro, some of them hiding within the coral reef.

He's been snorkeling before on this trip, but it always seems to inspire him when he gets down beneath the waves. As he looks over the gorgeous seascape, he notices a glaring light coming from deeper in the waters-- It must be the tool Shark needs. He exhales again and swims with all of his strength, triumphant as he finds the metal rod at the bottom of the sea. He grabs it from the sand carefully and swims to the surface, realizing as he's about to come up for air that he's been out of breath for a while now. When he comes up he shoves the mask off of his face, gasping for air.

"Find it?" He hears from the coast, and he looks up at Aukai. Rather than speak, he holds up the tool, the metal shining in the summer sun.

      "Great! Come on back."

Your kalon has to go diving for Shark's missing tool.
How do they find it, and what's the experience like?

"It's a busy day for diving," Malory notices, gaze fixed nervously on the crowded waters. "Surely if there was anything there, it would have been found by now?"
Aukai does not respond, does not turn from his position at the boat; the cold sea spray and biting wind have whipped away Malory's words, and she is forced to fall silent.
Shark is relying on you, she reminds herself, fiery conviction pushing down her fears. You, and no one else.
It is only her sense of responsibility that forces her to struggle into the snorkelling gear. She stares down into the dark depths of the water, Aukai's advice and warnings fading to a buzzing in her ears. Malory has never feared flying, because despite logically knowing its dangers, she cannot see any danger; nothing but blue sky and white cloud.
In the sea, she cannot see anything at all.
Cold: it is the first thing she registers, and it is all-encompassing. Then there is the weight, the foreign weight of waterlogged fur that gives way to total weightlessness as she fully submerges herself. She feels her skin go numb, and is glad of it; glad she cannot feel slimy seaweed or kelp brush against her, glad she can feel nothing but the importance of her task. Deeper and deeper, darker and darker; she swims until finally her paws bump against solid ground. She takes a breath, and it is at this moment that she realises she has greatly misunderstood the purpose of snorkelling equipment.
Perhaps, she thinks, distantly, as her breathing apparatus begins to fill with water, I should have paid closer attention to Aukai's instructions.
A vague urgency begins to make itself known in her mind, and she remembers: she needs to breathe, she cannot breathe, she needs to return to the surface, she cannot return to the surface without-
She grabs blindly at the ocean floor and her paw connects with something metallic.
That's convenient, she thinks; for a while after, she cannot think anything at all.

"It's lucky your survival instincts kicked in," Aukai tells her later, wrapping a shock blanket around her shoulders and pushing a soothing tea between her paws, "Because your common sense definitely didn't."
Malory shifts in her seat, embarrassed, and notices that the metallic object she'd retrieved had not only made it with her to the surface, but even appeared be some kind of engineering tool...? Following her gaze, Aukai sighs.
"Just because you found that darned tool, doesn't mean it was safe or sensible or anything close to being snorkelling..."
Malory nods along to Aukai's lecture, but internally she has just one thought: she hasn't let Shark down after all. And at that thought, even though she is still cold, bedraggled and frightened, Malory finds herself smiling.

Aukai is intimidating, he is much taller than Tris and far more knowledgeable about diving for Shark's lost items. Tris explained to Aukai exactly where Shark had dropped the tool. Auka was already familiar with the place. He gestured towards a pile of corals, gemstones and assorted lost and found items, "I found all of these things down there," he explained, "It's a tricky spot though, plenty of sharks this time of year and a fair number of nooks and cranny's for stuff to fall down." The older kalon rubbed his chin between two fingers, "I'll tell you what kid, I've got a busy afternoon but if you pop back tomorrow morning I'll be your diving buddy and we can go take a look."

Shark just had to drop his tool in the most awkward place imaginable! Plenty of places for it to get hidden or stuck and SHARKS! Tris was alarmed by Aukai's casual attitude, she'd never seen a shark before, let alone escaped one!

The next morning, Tris and Aukai put on some scuba gear and went looking for the tool. It was the first time Tris had done scuba diving anywhere but her local pool. The place was exactly as Aukai had suggested - completely littered with stuff. It resembled Arial's collection from the Little Mermaid. Tris noticed crabs scuttling about amongst the debris and several tools. Aukai signalled for them to swim lower and they began to dig through the rubbish.

When they returned to the surface they had collected about 7 tool-like things that vaguely matched the description Shark had given. This was either a pretty common boat-fixing tool or Shark was very careless with his tools.

Tris thanked Aukai and carried the tools back to Shark. (290 words)
