Moons ago, the five warrior clans, ThunderClan, WindClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, and SkyClan were destroyed by a massive storm. A tornado tore through the territories, and a massive forest fire ran through ThunderClan. The cats who were able to escape alive fled. With the remaining cats, StarClan contacted many warriors, even kittypets, to create new clans. If their plan failed, the warrior code may just be lost forever.

"I dare you!"

The five toms stared at the framework of metal that the twolegs were noisily riveting into place. Up on one of the upper beams, sat a ham and cheese sandwich. Untouched and ready to eat.

Sparrow narrowed his eyes and grinned. No need for encouragement, although there was plenty considering his fellow scavengers were chanting "DO IT" under their breathes. That sandwich was theirs.

His paw pads silently gripped at the slightly ridged surface below him. Once it was obvious that the twolegs were being far too loud to hear the scavenger taking food, he hooked his claws into the holes of the vertical support beam and quickly climbed up to the top level. He eagerly followed his nose and hopped next to the bagged ham and cheese.

But he was too enraveled in the smell to notice that the chant had turned from "DO IT!", into "STOP! TURN BACK!"

"AAAAIIIIYEEEE!!" he caterwauled.

The beam wasn't actually attached to the others at all. The twoleg's weird building machine picked it up and started swinging it through the air.

He hung on for dear life. The twoleg made a wrong turn. When it swung the other way, he hissed as he lost most of his grip and his hip scraped the sharp edged bolts. He prayed frantically to Starclan to save his hide. Finally, as the beam landed with a thud, the last of his grip slipped away from him.

His friends gasped and then sighed. Thank Starclan for giving cats the 'land-on-all-four-paws reflex'. Though heavily bruised and scratched, he was alive. With the sandwich landing right next to him to make the long fall worthwhile.

The light was fading, casting long shadows in a small hollow nestled amongst open woodland. Silence shrouded the forest and the air with thick with tension. The hollow was surrounded by brush and trees; creating a good defensive barrier. A small den was hidden near the base of the largest tree and well used paths laced the hollow. Two cats hid under the bushes near their den pelts bristled. The scent of strange cats hung heavy in the wind.

“We have to go.” Scorch hissed as he glanced at his brother’s silvered black coat. “We can’t win this fight, Ash.” He warned, a hint of worry coloring his tone. Ash narrowed his jade eyes as he looked out from the bush. “This is our home, Scorch.” Ash replied shifting his weight. “We can’t just leave. Where would we go?” Scorch flattened his ears in annoyance. “Anywhere else.” He whispered, as the scent of strangers grew closer. A moon before a group of cats had invaded their territory and had slowly been taking it over as their own. Now all that was left was their den, their home. By sunrise it was all going to be gone. Ash shook his head. “We fight for it.” He replied stubbornly and unsheathed his claws. “We’ll win.” With that he darted out to meet the cats coming for their home.

“Ash!”

It had gone horribly. Outnumbered and outmatched it was over before it began. Ash screeched a retreat. And Scorch ran. He ran as fast as he could until he couldn’t run anymore. He stared into the darkness from his hiding spot, shivering, waiting for his brother.

In the dim morning light Scorch limped out of the only home he knew. His whole body ached, especially his hind leg where he had been clawed during his escape. But that was nothing compared to his heartache. They’d lost. He had ran, forsaken his home, and now was alone. Ash never came. He hadn't made it out of the hollow.
