Prompt: Muddystep limped into the medicine cat’s den, letting out a hiss every time her front left paw hit the ground. Her face contorted in pain, and she practically collapsed as soon as she got into the soft moss of the patient’s nest.
Cherryblossom was there in an instant, Duststripe off taking care of a kitten who’d contracted whitecough.
His gaze caught immediately on the poorly wrapped cobwebs around her leg. “What happened?” he asked as he hurried over, tearing off the cobwebs to take a look at the deep scratch.
“Well,” said Muddystep, voice strained. “It’s a long story.”

It was a perfectly ordinary hunting patrol that evening. Muddystep bounded ahead like a kit with a wide grin on her face as the wind billowed into her long fur.
Behind her was Diamondglint, Moonriver, and Dawnglow as they stalked through the undergrowth. Moonriver in particular was darting through the bushes like a snake.
With a sudden burst of wind, Moonriver pounced on some unseen creature.
CRACK!
The mouse skittered away and all eyes turned to glare at Muddystep. She looked down; a pile of bark lay shattered beneath her paws. Shame pushed her head beneath her shoulders.
“I’m sorry,” she said with a whimper. “I wasn't looking where I was going.”
“You better be,” said Diamondglint with a growl. “That’s the only prey we’ve seen all patrol and you scared it away!”
“Oh, leave her be,” Dawnglow said, brushing aside Diamondglint’s hostility. “It’s not her fault she’s a klutz.”
No. That can’t possibly be right. Muddystep wasn’t a klutz… was she? She slunk away, ears flat against her head.
Fine. She’d just catch a lot of prey herself, nevermind everyone else!
Decision made, Muddystep headed off to follow the faint scent of squirrel that lingered in the opposite direction, pawsteps firm.
Oddly enough, a strange, tangy scent began to fill the air. It smelled bigger than prey. What was it? Muddystep crawled on to find the source. It wasn’t a pleasant smell. But Muddystep was determined to find out!
There was a flash of orange in her vision. Perhaps it was a rogue?
Muddystep crept closer, eyes glittering as she watched for it again.
And there it was! Oh, and it was massive too. A brilliant orange creature with a proud fluffy tail. It looked cuddly.
“Hey there!” she chirped, prancing up to the creature. “I’m Muddystep! Who’re you?”
The creature let out a yip and a growl as soon as it heard her. Too fast for her to react, it dug it’s fangs into her exposed left leg. Searing pain shot across Muddystep’s vision, and she let out a loud yowl as she desperately tried to claw it off.
Within moments, the other three arrived.
“Fox!” cried Diamondglint, jumping immediately into the fray with her sharp claws as she dug into it’s muzzle.
It let Muddystep go, and the wounded molly flopped to the ground as the other three began an epic battle. She was losing blood fast as the wound was quite deep. Her gaze began to go black and fuzzy. Was this how she was going to die?
With a final scratch the the eyes, the fox ran off. Moonriver stood beside her now, carefully binding the wound up with cobwebs.
“It’s not pretty,” they said softly, “but it’ll do. Lie here for a bit - I’ll help you get back to camp. Dawnglow, Diamondglint, can you two finish the hunt and let my mate know what’s going on?”
Dawnglow let out a sigh, licking the blood off of their claws. “Sure, sure, whatever you say Moonriver.”
“Good.” Moonriver narrowed their eyes at Dawnglow before returning to Muddystep. “Now stay here, okay? I’ll be right next to you. Once you think you can stand, I’ll help you back to camp.”
Muddystep nodded, eyes half closed as she lay in the crunchy leaves at nightfall.

“And that’s how it happened.”
Muddystep tipped her head back with an exhausted sigh as Cherryblossom finished with the cobwebs and cleaning up the blood. He gave her a little nod, signalling that he was done.
“I’m sorry to hear about that,” he said as he padded over to the her stores. “I’ll have a talk with Moonriver and Mo-Marblestar about that. Other than that, all I can do is offer painkillers.”
“No, no,” said Muddystep wearily, waving him off. “I’ll be fine.”
“All right. I’ll leave you alone for the night then.”
And with that, Cherryblossom withdrew to the adjacent room for the medicine cats, leaving Muddystep all on her own. She let out a long breath, and the night offered silence and peace in the wake of the pain of the day.
