prompt ;; (1000/1000 words)
The she-cat sulked back into camp, her fur glistening. She heard snickers as she walked past the camp’s guards but didn’t bother growling at them to shut up. She had no energy left. “Acornfur, what happened?” Violetleap’s voice was quiet from the nursery den.

Acornfur rolled her eyes and walked over to her best friend. “Someone pushed me into the lake.” She glanced towards the entrance just as a large grey tom strolled into camp, laughing with the other patrol members.

“Oh, Acornfur…” Violetleap nudged her gently. “Boulderfoot probably likes you.” Acornfur gagged at the other’s words. “He probably just wants your attention.”

It took too much self-control for her to not claw off Violetleap’s face. “That’s ridiculous! He just doesn’t like me, simple. There’s nothing more to it.” Her voice trailed off as her brain worked overtime. “ But if that’s what the deputy thinks of me, I would hate to know what everyone else feels.”

“Don’t be silly.” The other she-cat smiled, and Acornfur only rolled her eyes in response. “I’m sure everyone else likes you.”

“You say that, but-”

“No, I know that. You’re one of the best hunters we’ve got. Why wouldn’t everyone like you?”

“I’m pretty selfish, I don’t know how to take a joke, I enjoy making enemies more than making friends, I-” A cough from behind her made Acornfur turn around. Boulderfoot stood with his head down, paws shuffling awkwardly. “What do you want?”

“I wanted to, uh, apologise.” Acornfur raised an eyebrow, questioning his motives. “Do you wanna head out of camp for a bit? So I can explain?” She could feel Violetleap’s excitement radiating from her pelt, but she only sighed.

“Sure.” Neither spoke as they headed towards the training fields. It wasn’t long before they themselves looking down towards the camp from the top of one of the great oaks. The cool night air swirled around them, turning the situation into something much calmer than either expected. Having Boulderfoot so close to her made Acornfur’s pelt ripple with nerves, and as much as she wanted to speak and have it all over and done with, the night’s silence was more comforting than anything the deputy could have said.

“Look, Grassclaw and Barkrunner both really like you and I got jealous.” Boulderfoot’s sudden voice almost jolted Acornfur out of the tree. She didn’t have time to process his words before he continued. “I’m just really impulsive sometimes, and when we got to the lake, I just had to push you in. They’re both so fixated on you and I’m sick and tired of it.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I just want my friends back.”

Acornfur took a moment to breathe, knowing that Boulderfoot was waiting for her reply. “They need to stop then. Not for your sake, but for mine. I don’t want toms trailing after me. I’m way too into myself to be into anyone else.”

“Maybe we’re just so problematic that we’re made for each other?” Boulderfoot’s jaw dropped at his own words, not entirely thinking before they escaped him. Acornfur turned her head slowly, eyes not reading any emotions.

“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” Her voice had dropped to barely more than a whisper. Violetleap was right after all.

“I think I am.” His voice cracked. The air between them was thick and both found themselves struggling to breathe. This was it. “Do you want to be my mate?”

Acornfur bolted from the tree without a word, hauling herself down in only a handful of moments. There was no chance she would answer a question like THAT after being pushed into a lake.

No chance at all.

xxx-------

“Are you the one who almost killed Falcondream out on Sun’s Peak?” Stonecloud’s voice rippled with anger, causing Acornfur to laugh.

“I didn’t ‘almost kill him’. He just fell in the lake. It was a sign.” A purr echoed against her words. The tom rolled his eyes as she continued. “If he’s too stupid to figure it out, maybe get a different medicine cat.” Thunderous footsteps made Acornfur turn around, though at the sight of her mate, a wicked grin spread across her face. “Hello, darling.”

Boulderstar ignored her greeting. “Stonecloud, I understand your frustration, but I can assure you that none of us would ever send a sign to intentionally hurt one of your clan.” Acornfur sighed in annoyance at his words, but turned back to Stonecloud and winked, masking her feelings.

Anger radiated from the living cat’s fur. “I swear, you are everyone’s least favourite member of StarClan.” The she-cat let out a roar of laughter, causing Stonecloud to growl in response.

“I’m not going to change who I am to please your clan, Stonecloud.” She padded slowly towards him, the grin still pulling at her mouth. “I’m doing my job. Now go back and look after your clan.” With an expertly aimed swipe of her paw, she knocked the tom back, causing him to disappear from their plane.

“Do you really not care if they hate you?” Boulderstar sat with his tail over his paws, tilting his head slightly. “That doesn’t seem like the Acornfur I remember.”

“Of course I care. But I wasn’t lying when I said I wouldn’t change.” The she-cat took her place by her mate’s side, pressing her face into his soft fur. The two sat silently for a few moments, taking in each other’s company.

The tom looked upwards, taking in the darkened sky. “I don’t want to let you give anymore signs to the clan.” Boulderstar felt her nod in his fur.

“I understand. Maybe I do go a little far.” A laugh escaped the other cat.

“My love, you never go too far. Sometimes I think you don’t go far enough.”

xxx-------

The clan didn’t know what to do with the drowned bird of prey they found the next day. Acornfur was too close to sending them another sign showing how deadly that bird would be.

Cat Name: Scallopfoot
Clan: Fadedclan
Rank: Warrior

Gender: Female
Age: 37 moons
Prompt:
A shape moved through the night, Scallopfoot darted through the bushes with practiced paws and down a path she had taken so many times before. She was heading north towards the Forbidden Mountains but to her, she calls it her former home. Thistleclan, the clan over the mountains and the clan the founders of Fadedclan came from, she lived there at one point in her life but left due to hearing about a clan who had been destroyed and was now being rebuilt south of the mountains. Her curiosity got the best of her and she left, knowing she probably wouldn't be able to come back. In Fadedclan she was welcomed with open paws, though cats who lived in Fadedclan before its fall were suspicious of her and later learned it was because of the stories older cats had told about cats spying on them in the mountains.
Scallopfoot looked up, her eyes following the ridges of the mountains, she had come to this point countless times. Once every quarter moon she would leave camp in the middle of the night and come to the Forbidden Mountains, gaze up and leap up the flat rocks and see how high she could get, how close she could get to Thistleclan. Tonight, though, she paused and hesitated before taking her first leap up, landing perfectly as she had done this many times. With each jump she felt closer to Thistleclan and Starclan, she was closer to the stars and her former home.
She jumped higher, and higher, and higher, until she was as high as she had gotten the previous time and if she fell from here she would be waking up in Starclan. The she-cat took a deep breath and looked up, searching for the next perch and once she locked her eyes onto is she paused to gauge how much effort she would need to put into her jump. After a few moments of standing still, she jumped, claws scrabbling at the rock as she pulled herself up and almost falling. She was nowhere near the top, but somehow she felt more at peace, this was the same feeling she felt every single time she came up to the mountains, to dream of seeing Thistleclan again and being closer to her ancestors.
Nights like these offered peace and silence to Scallopfoot, a feeling that she could only achieve sitting on the high perches of the Forbidden Mountains in the northernmost part of Fadedclan's territory.

Cat Name: Muddystep
Clan: Eclipse Clan
Rank: Warrior

Gender: Molly
Age: 27 moons
Prompt:
Muddystep limped into the medicine cat’s den, letting out a hiss every time her front left paw hit the ground. Her face contorted in pain, and she practically collapsed as soon as she got into the soft moss of the patient’s nest.

Cherryblossom was there in an instant, Duststripe off taking care of a kitten who’d contracted whitecough.

His gaze caught immediately on the poorly wrapped cobwebs around her leg. “What happened?” he asked as he hurried over, tearing off the cobwebs to take a look at the deep scratch.

“Well,” said Muddystep, voice strained. “It’s a long story.”

_______________________________________________________

It was a perfectly ordinary hunting patrol that evening. Muddystep bounded ahead like a kit with a wide grin on her face as the wind billowed into her long fur.

Behind her was Diamondglint, Moonriver, and Dawnglow as they stalked through the undergrowth. Moonriver in particular was darting through the bushes like a snake.

With a sudden burst of wind, Moonriver pounced on some unseen creature.

CRACK!

The mouse skittered away and all eyes turned to glare at Muddystep. She looked down; a pile of bark lay shattered beneath her paws. Shame pushed her head beneath her shoulders.

“I’m sorry,” she said with a whimper. “I wasn't looking where I was going.”

“You better be,” said Diamondglint with a growl. “That’s the only prey we’ve seen all patrol and you scared it away!”

“Oh, leave her be,” Dawnglow said, brushing aside Diamondglint’s hostility. “It’s not her fault she’s a klutz.”

No. That can’t possibly be right. Muddystep wasn’t a klutz… was she? She slunk away, ears flat against her head.

Fine. She’d just catch a lot of prey herself, nevermind everyone else!

Decision made, Muddystep headed off to follow the faint scent of squirrel that lingered in the opposite direction, pawsteps firm.

Oddly enough, a strange, tangy scent began to fill the air. It smelled bigger than prey. What was it? Muddystep crawled on to find the source. It wasn’t a pleasant smell. But Muddystep was determined to find out!

There was a flash of orange in her vision. Perhaps it was a rogue?

Muddystep crept closer, eyes glittering as she watched for it again.

And there it was! Oh, and it was massive too. A brilliant orange creature with a proud fluffy tail. It looked cuddly.

“Hey there!” she chirped, prancing up to the creature. “I’m Muddystep! Who’re you?”

The creature let out a yip and a growl as soon as it heard her. Too fast for her to react, it dug it’s fangs into her exposed left leg. Searing pain shot across Muddystep’s vision, and she let out a loud yowl as she desperately tried to claw it off.

Within moments, the other three arrived.

“Fox!” cried Diamondglint, jumping immediately into the fray with her sharp claws as she dug into it’s muzzle.

It let Muddystep go, and the wounded molly flopped to the ground as the other three began an epic battle. She was losing blood fast as the wound was quite deep. Her gaze began to go black and fuzzy. Was this how she was going to die?

With a final scratch the the eyes, the fox ran off. Moonriver stood beside her now, carefully binding the wound up with cobwebs.

“It’s not pretty,” they said softly, “but it’ll do. Lie here for a bit - I’ll help you get back to camp. Dawnglow, Diamondglint, can you two finish the hunt and let my mate know what’s going on?”

Dawnglow let out a sigh, licking the blood off of their claws. “Sure, sure, whatever you say Moonriver.”

“Good.” Moonriver narrowed their eyes at Dawnglow before returning to Muddystep. “Now stay here, okay? I’ll be right next to you. Once you think you can stand, I’ll help you back to camp.”

Muddystep nodded, eyes half closed as she lay in the crunchy leaves at nightfall.

_______________________________________________________

“And that’s how it happened.”

Muddystep tipped her head back with an exhausted sigh as Cherryblossom finished with the cobwebs and cleaning up the blood. He gave her a little nod, signalling that he was done.

“I’m sorry to hear about that,” he said as he padded over to the her stores. “I’ll have a talk with Moonriver and Mo-Marblestar about that. Other than that, all I can do is offer painkillers.”

“No, no,” said Muddystep wearily, waving him off. “I’ll be fine.”

“All right. I’ll leave you alone for the night then.”

And with that, Cherryblossom withdrew to the adjacent room for the medicine cats, leaving Muddystep all on her own. She let out a long breath, and the night offered silence and peace in the wake of the pain of the day.

    Clan: DeltaClan
    Rank: warrior (formerly queen)

    Gender: female
    Age: 30 moons
    Prompt: [977/1000]

    "Momma, look what I found!"
"Shellkit's found something super cool, momma!"
Briarrose swallowed a purr of amusement and watched as her kits scampered up to her. "Tell me what you found, Shellkit."
The little cream tom proudly lifted up a magnificent feather of brown and blue. From the coloring and the rich prey-scent, Briarrose quickly identified it as duck.
"That's beautiful," Briarrose commented. "Do you know what bird it came from?"
"A heron!" squeaked Shellkit's sister, Sedgekit, a pale brown point only a few shades lighter than her mother.
"A hawk!" chirped Shellkit at the same time.
"I do believe it's from a duck," Briarrose revealed, gently touching the feather after Shellkit had dropped it at her paws.
"No way!" the kits gasped, blue eyes wide. "Ducks are brown!"
"Actually, some ducks have some really pretty feathers just on part of their wing, like the one you found."
The kits squeaked in surprise and began playing with the feather, admiring how it shone in the sunlight.
Briarrose settled down, watching her kits play with love in her heart. After she'd lost their father to a vicious fox, they were all she had left of him.
I don't know what I'd do without them.

The wind howled as it whipped her whiskers back.
"How much further do we have to go?" Shellkit whined, paws dragging in the mud. "I'm cold and hungry and my paws hurt."
"I don't like the mud," Sedgekit added, paws sinking into the marsh. Her ears were flattened as she glanced at the sky, eyes wide with fear. "I don't like being out here before a storm."
"We're almost there, dears," she cooed, her heart aching at the thought of making them walk so far. "Just a little longer." She scooped up Shellkit, wincing when the weight of him made her jaws ache. She would've loved to carry them all the way, but her kits were quickly growing and had become too heavy to carry for long distances.
Another warrior followed her lead and grasped Sedgekit gently by the scruff. Sedgekit's muddy paws dangled beneath her as she swung from Vixensnow's jaws, although she looked too tired to complain. Briarrose shot Vixensnow a grateful glance.
Wrenstar cast a fretful glance behind her as the small Clan continued. "In order to reach the hills we have to cross a river," she warned, tail twitching anxiously. "We need to keep an eye out for each other." She blinked at both Briarrose and Vixensnow. "The kits especially."
The cats crossed the river carefully, with Petrelflight leading the way with his long legs to test for shallower spots. Briarrose was right behind Vixensnow, with Brightsky bringing up the rear in case anything happened to the kits.
Briarrose kept her muzzle as high as she could, feeling Shellkit tense against her, his whiskers quivering in fear. Be brave, little Shellkit, she willed him silently.
They were nearly to the other side of the overflowing river when a roar could be heard from upstream. Briarrose turned just in time to see a wave of water bearing down on her.
"Flood!" Brightsky yowled in alarm, and a moment later, the huge wave crashed down upon the cats. Water filled her ears and vision and Briarrose struck out blindly, hoping to find purchase on the rocks below, but the water was ruthless. It flung her downstream, twisting and turning, turning her vision dark with the murky floodwater. My kits! Her heart dropped as Shellkit was wrenched away from her, his shrill cries muffled in the rushing water.
Her claws finally shagged on the shore and she hauled herself out, dripping and gasping for breath. The river was a rushing torrent now, branches and debris swept downstream by the flood. In a panic, she identified the pale shapes of her Clanmates hauling themselves out from the river.
"The kits!" Vixensnow cried from the other bank, and Briarrose glimpsed two tiny bobbing heads, mewling for help, before the water dragged them down again, sweeping them downstream and away from the cats.
Everything else was a blur as the cats pounded along the river, finally able to fish out the two sodden kits. Briarrose rushed forward, trying to pummel life into her kits with quick strokes of her tongue - but it was no use.
    They were dead.

    -----

After the floodwaters receded, DeltaClan returned to their island. They had buried the drowned kits' bodies in the hills, and Briarrose's heart screamed that it should be with them as she padded back towards camp.
Her mind was a roaring storm of guilt, louder than the howling wind or the rushing of the flood that took her kits away from her. As the Clan settled down to share tongues, Briarrose padded out of camp, heading for the delta.
The sun was dipping below the horizon, a bright fiery gold surrounded by crimson and rose. The light dipped behind the line of sight, all color draining away at once to leave a pale gray before the inky black of the night took over.
The night offered silence and peace.
The gentle rippling of the river soothed her thoughts, and in the gentle rattling of the reeds in the breeze she could've sworn she could hear the soft whispers of her kits.
    "It wasn't your fault, momma!"
    "Momma, please don't be sad!"
    "We love you, momma."

Paws padded gently behind her and she felt Vixensnow's tail gently rest on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry," the warrior murmured, and Briarrose dipped her head, the two she-cats sharing a moment of silence and understanding. Finally, Vixensnow continued, "It's time for the vigil."
Briarrose smiled sadly. "It's time for the vigil," she echoed softly.
As she followed the warrior back to camp, she saw two tiny starry figures playing just outside of camp.
Their cries of joy brought peace to Briarrose's heart.

Cat Name: Cocoaflight
Clan: Dawnclan
Rank: Moonwatcher (medicine cat)

Gender: Tom
Age: 45 moons
Prompt:
A sleek tom walked up to Cocoa, waving his tail gracefully. Cocoa had been out on one of his night-time walks, which he did when he needed the night’s peace. But that peace had been shattered by the appearance of this cat. Neither cat made any attempt to hide themselves, as they each had the other firmly in their sights. “Hello, kittypet. My name is Birchstar.” The cream tom was the first to speak. Cocoa frowned.
“What’s a kittypet?” Cocoa asked. Birchstar laughed.
“It’s a term we wild cats use. It means a cat whose life is not that of a true cat. A cat who is owned by Twolegs.” Cocoa flattened his ears defensively.
“It’s not as bad as you say it is! True, we are owned by Twolegs, our food looks and tastes like rabbit droppings, the Twolegs limit our freedom...” Cocoa’s voice trailed off as he realised how bad his life was compared to that of this magnificent wild cat. “You know what? You’re right. Now you say what we should be like, I don’t feel like a proper cat. Could I join you?” Cocoa had failed to notice the green eyes that watched him from the bushes, or the rippling tortoiseshell fur that prepared to pounce. He only saw her when she was leaping towards him. Cocoa was too slow to react, and the mysterious tortoiseshell landed upon him and had her teeth to his neck within an instant. He wheezed, the breath knocked out of him, feeling her sharp teeth pierce his skin.
“Woodsmoke!” Birchstar said sharply. The she-cat, who Cocoa assumed was called Woodsmoke, released her grip slightly, but kept a paw firmly on the side of his head.
“What?” She hissed. “I was just about to kill this kittypet! He can’t join us and you know he can’t! He’s a
kittypet, for goodness’ sake! Birchstar, have you gone mad?” Birchstar held his ground.
“I’m testing him,” he hissed in return. “He may know things we don’t.” At that moment, a small grey furball hurled itself into Birchstar’s side. He laughed and turned to nuzzle the fluff, which turned out to be a young kit. “Hello Thornkit.” He chuckled. “Where’s your mummy?”
“Oh! Hello Daddy! Mummy’s just back there.” He gestured behind him, where a beautiful tabby had just appeared. Cocoa was shocked. There were so many cats. He didn’t even know cats lived in groups as big as these. Following the large tabby were three more kits, tumbling over their tiny paws.
“Why hello, Barkshine,” he meowed cheerily.
“Hello Birchstar,” Baekshine mewed. One of the kits stopped and sniffed a curious looking plant.
“Daddy, what’s this do?” She reached over to take a bite. Clearly Cocoa knew more about plants than these cats, for they just seemed a little bemused that their kit was eating a poisonous berry that could kill a youngster like her in mere hours.
An involuntary cry escaped his throat. “No!” He yelled, leaping towards the confused kit. He knocked her to the side, but to his dismay, she’d already taken a bite. “Spit it out,” he said forcefully. “Spit it out, I’m telling you!” She was clearly afraid. “Birchstar, Barkshine, tell this kit to spit out the berry!” Birchstar had puffed up his fur, and was regarding Cocoa with anger and a hint of confusion.
“What on earth are you doing with my kit?” He shouted.
“Now’s not the time!” Cocoa was really panicking now. “She’s just eaten yew berries! They’ll kill her!” Birchstar seemed to finally have grasped what was going on.
“You mean... deathberries? Emberkit, please spit that out.” He was clearly trying to keep calm.
“But Daddy, I’ve already swallowed it.” She opened her mouth to show it empty. Then Cocoa began panicking even more. He’d have to find a certain herb. If he didn’t, or the herb he needed didn’t grow in this area, Emberkit was as good as dead.
“Wait here, all of you. Don’t let her fall asleep.” They’d know who he meant. With that, he sprinted away. His nose, though not as keen as he’d like in a situation such as this, helped him locate the plant he needed. Yarrow.
After uprooting it, he carried it back to the other cats. They all waited around anxiously, and Emberkit had fallen to the floor, groaning in agony. Birchstar approached him tensely. “Whatever you need to do, do it quickly. Barkshine’s distraught, and she’s collapsed.” Cocoa nodded to show he understood. He padded over to the kit slowly, trying to show he wasn’t a threat. She opened one eye and whimpered weakly.
“Here you go,” he murmured soothingly. “Eat this and you’ll feel much better.” Emberkit opened her mouth and took a tiny bite from the plant. “Come on,” Cocoa said encouragingly, “just a little more.” Soon she’d managed to eat most of the plant, and that was when she began being sick. To his relief, the majority of the berry had come out, but the others didn’t know what was happening.
“You’ve killed her!” Barkshine shrieked. “You’ve killed my baby!” Cocoa shook his head. When Emberkit had stopped being sick, she sat upright and mumbled something incoherent.
“She’ll take a few days to recover,” Cocoa told the others. “It would be better if I came, since none of you seem to know much about herbs.” Birchstar begrudgingly accepted, and the group returned to the clan camp.

Why was he thinking about that? Than was over a moon ago, when he’d been accepted into the clan. Since then, he’d been ridiculed and thrust to the side about being a kittypet. But he’d saved the life of a kit. Was that not enough? Not in the eyes of Woodsmoke it wasn’t. To her, he wasn’t the clan’s only Moonwatcher, he was just a lowly kittypet. So when he had thoughts like these, he went for a walk in the dark. For the night always reassured him. Offered tranquility, silence and peace.

    Cat Name: Doeripple
    Clan: Bearclan
    Rank: warrior

    Gender: she-cat
    Age: 42 moons
    Prompt:
A small molly, more fluff than anything, bounced around the camp, following cat after cat.

Some were happy to have her company, playing along and chatting with the enthusiastic young kit, while others just went about their business without taking notice of her. How anyone could ignore the talkative ball of fur was beyond her parents. Some of the cats didn't even notice her - a testament to how many kits were prowling around the camp at the time. Still, little Doekit kept following the warriors, eager to learn everything she could and become an apprentice.

The molly did the same thing day after day. After a moon or so, most of the warriors began ignoring her, forgetting altogether that she was even following them. Doekit bounced after them anyways, happy just to watch and be in the presence of such great warriors. Her parents were often out looking for her, trying to keep tabs on the rambunctious, restless little kit.

Soon, though, they wouldn't need to worry about their molly running off. Soon, she would be forever changed.

      ---

Doekit hurried after Storkfang, her little legs moving so fast you could barely see them. She was practically ten cats behind the tom, but she was trying with all of her might to keep up. He'd said nothing to the molly the entire time, and she wasn't sure if he had been ignoring her or if he hadn't noticed her at all. The tom was practically deaf, Doekit remembered her father saying.

Her small legs started to ache a little. She had been following the large tom all day, and now he was leading her to the far side of the forests. When she noticed Storkfang stop in a clearing, she decided to sit down and rest a little ways away from him. From there, she saw Storkfang meet with dark-colored she-cat. Their words were hushed, so the small kit only caught a few here and there.

When she got back to camp, Doekit told her parents all about the adventures of the day - including the words she'd heard the cats say in the clearing. Her parents, as it turned out, did not think that the words were all in good fun. And they were right. The following nightfall, Storkfang was killed for plotting against Bearclan.

      And Doekit?

Her world had turned upside down and she was unsure of anything. She had caused his death without meaning to - all she had done was speak words. Who would be next? Who else would she kill with her words?

The silent, peaceful night created a sharp contrast to the horrific events of the day. The young molly sat down, closing her eyes and letting the wind card through her fur. It was such a wonderful night. How could any night following a day like that be so nice? Sitting there, listening to the quietness and thinking about the peace that came with the stillness of silence, an idea was sparked. 'No one,' Doekit thought, firmly, 'No one else will die because of my words.' She thought for a moment longer, 'And that means no one will hear my words ever again.'

'Maybe I will find peace in the quiet, just as the night does.'
