Ash is incredibly protective of those in his care, as long as you are below the age of 6 moons, willing to leap in front of a Twoleg monster or a rabid dog one of his charges are in danger. However, in regards to the older cats in the clan: the Tom is quite standoffish, often only speaking to another adult if it's required. Of course, if you were a previous charge, Ash tends to be nicer to them than to any other cat. One word to sum him up? Thunderstorm, mood changing with a snap for those he cherishes.
